Alice Humbert owns the Kaunu cottage, from whom we rented personally on VRBO. We were privileged to be able to experience this cottage. The cottage was immaculate and beautifully furnished and decorated. From the moment you open the door you are transported into a world that takes you back to an earlier time in Hawaii. Everything you could want is in this cottage. From a coffee grinder for that fresh and famous Kona Coffee available all over the island to a washer and dryer just the right size for keeping your suit and board shorts ready to wear. The two comfortable bedrooms have the island style atmosphere and if you close your eyes you can almost feel taken back in time. Each morning we enjoyed our coffee on the beautiful lanai with ocean views and beautiful sunsets. The sounds of the local birds added to this picturesque setting. We would spend our mornings at the beach and afternoons in the private yard where we enjoyed tanning or just a little nap! Great surfing, boogie boarding, diving and every other beach/water sport imaginable is near by. The outdoor shower is great for rinsing off people and gear. In the evenings we could prepare our own meals either at the cottage or barbecue on the lanai. This cottage has it all! Several of the best beaches on the Big Island are ten minutes away and we had many restaurants to choose from along the Kohala coast or up country in Waimea. We had such a wonderful time and Alice provided us with a wealth of local knowledge and aloha that made our stay memorable.
Everything about this cottage exceeded our expectations. Not only did it work perfectly for a relaxing vacation, it was close to the best beach in the country (only 8 minutes away). The owner has truly thought through all of the amenities one needs for an Hawaii vacation -- picnic coolers, boogie boards, beach umbrellas, beach towels.
We'll be going every year now I expect. We highly recommend this to others.
We just returned from two weeks on the Big Island. Our second week was in Alice's Cottage. The home is very comfortable and had all the amenities we needed, plus a beautiful patio to enjoy the scenery. The photos were a true representation of the Cottage. Alice was always available and turned us on to all "local" attractions which made our time more enjoyable. The views were outstanding overlooking the Kohala coast. Both Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea were spectacular and right in view. We were 7 miles from the town of Waimea and located on the dryer side. The house location allowed visiting Hawi and Waipio Valley an easy and spectacular drive. We suggest having barbecue at The Fish and Hog; live music and food at the Blue Dragon. Thanks, Alice!!
Our first stay at 'The Cottage' was in Feb 2010 and we loved it so much, we returned this past January. What a wonderful place to stay, slightly out of the way on a quiet part of the Big Island. Great view of the ocean combined with a wonderfully comfortable place to call home. Beautifully decorated to every detail! Great access to beaches, sight seeing or just relaxing at home. Alice is a great owner and we now consider her to be a great friend. We can't wait to return to the Big Island and stay at 'Our Cottage'! :>) Check it out! ... you won't be disappointed.
This was the perfect place to stay for my time on The Big Island. The cottage is just as adorable as the photos would indicate. Everything was very clean and well maintained. The owner was delightful and always available for anything that might be needed. As it turned out, everything we needed was already supplied for us! Don't miss Merriman's (In Kamuela) for lunch. Pau's is also very good. On the shore try Lava Lava, and Tommy Bahamas for lunch.
I had a wonderful time staying at the cottage. It was spotlessly clean, cute as a button in decor and so very convenient. The beach is less then 10 minutes away. Parking at the beach was always available and I walked along the beach every day. The house itself has everything you need and so relaxing. The nights were a delightful temperature with beautiful sunsets over the ocean right from the patio
Waimea was our second stop on our 10-day honeymoon in Hawaii. We stayed at Alice's place for three nights and definitely enjoyed the off-beat (yet central!) location as well as the cozy size of the cottage. Bed was very comfortable as were other furnishings of the house, and we had no problem finding the place. As others have noted, you do have to be comfortable with wildlife here, as with any place that you stay in Hawaii. There were tons of lizards, geckos, etc and a fair share of Hawaii insect life. I noticed that there were more insects here than any other place that we stayed, but that could just be the nature of the area. We did notice that hosts are actively trying to get rid of the ants, though from personal experience I say good luck in that endeavor (they're hard to get out!). Only drawback that I would mention here that I don't believe others have is that the place is RIGHT next to Highway 19. If you have the windows open (during the day or at night), it can get quite loud. As a result we were a bit hot in our east-facing room most mornings. Another place that we stayed provided a noise machine and so I might encourage the hosts here to look into that investment.
