Photos and Description of the Islesboro Island vacation cottage rental 2 Enclosed BR/1 Loft BR/2BA Sleeps 6

Our beautiful 'work in progress' cottage, nestled on six and a half acres of water front woods, is available for rental in June, July and September. The property is on the quiet north end of Islesboro, a gear down island, reached by a State operated car ferry. It is a gentle quiet acreage with a gradually sloping secluded beach and gorgeous views across the East Penobscot Bay of the mouth of the Bagaduce River, the entrance to Castine’s Harbor. If you’re an early riser you can watch the sunrise over these vistas. Beach comb for hours in this peaceful atmosphere. The edge of the beach is 70 feet from the house, a short hop, skip and a jump. Deer visit often as they have a run through the woods. Also wending its way through the woods is a semi permanent stream.

Further details for this vacation cottage rental in Islesboro Island, Maine

Island Atmosphere: In walking distance is the northern tip of the island, Turtle Head, with a nature preserve and circuit hike trail offering panoramic overlooks of the rocks below and the whole north bay, including Searsport, Belfast and Northport. If you don’t like nature and zoning down, then this is not the rental for you. The island is home to about 625 people in the off season and a max of 2,000 in the summer. There is no downtown, movie theater or shopping center. There are instead, beautiful country roads with unending water views. If you stop and go away from your car, you can leave the keys in it! Biking, town beaches, friendly people who wave when you pass them on the road, breath taking sunsets behind the Camden Hills..

Island Amenities: Two grocery stores provide all the basics and serve as communication posts. Events are announced there and at the Town Hall, on the bulletin boards. The island boasts a magnet K-12 school, a full service health center manned by PA’s, and huge turn of the century 'cottages' on the ritzy southern end, Dark Harbor. There are snack shops by the ferry and in the Dark Harbor village in the summer, and the two grocery stores serve sandwiches and takeout food.

Cottage Details: The cottage, with 1500 square feet, is a result of the collaboration of the owners and a renowned island design builder. From every window you can see woods or the close beach. Currently it is completely finished outside and has all the modern conveniences inside, except completed ceilings, wallboard and trim. It is now a three season home, thanks to the Vermont Castings wood stove. The owners are completing the entire house, for now it’s partially warm-colored raw wood and unpainted wallboard. A large cathedral ceiling living room and dining space adjoin the completely equipped kitchen. Antiques furnish the spaces and the mattresses are all top notch. The floors are light green painted subflooring with Oriental rugs softening them. Overall it’s rustic but beautifully designed and executed and comfortably furnished and equipped.

We wanted to say what a great place you have in Islesboro. My wife and I stayed the week of July 4th. The setup couldnt be better, such a close walk to an almost private cove with beautiful views and tons of shells to hunt for. My wife made it up for sunrise and took the most beautiful pictures sitting on an old log just off the beach. We loved the house with it's gorgeous cabinets and everything you'd need to cook are all there. We'd highly recommend this rental to anyone that wants to enjoy the beauty of Islesboro.

Hello Kathy & Mike,

I just want to thank you for our WONDERFUL vacation on Islesboro! The week (despite the fluctuating wether) was perfect! It gave us that much needed "away-from-everything", time as a family. Our sons loved the idea of marching off to the shoreline in order to explore their "Periwinkle Rock" at low tide. I'm looking forward to creating a beautiful mosaic with all the sea glass I collected from various beaches along the island. I'll send you a photo once it's completed.

We tried our hand at fishing off our boat, but caught multiple glimses of seals & porpoises instead... how beautiful! One evening, while craving SOME sort of seafood, we harvested a pot full of muscles (again, at low tide) to add to our dinner's pasta dish. Can't get any fresher than that :)

Jeff happily had the time to read ALL 3 of Linda Greenlaw's books. He brought along "All Fishermen Are Liars" & was happily surprised your bookshelf contained her other 2! So his nose was in a book whenever we weren't out exploring some other part of Islesboro. It was such a treat for him to have time to just read for reading's sake!

I beleive his wrist needed recovery time from returing a wave to EVERY car that drove past us last week. It's such a unique & endearing characteristic of the island.

Again, I thank you for renting out your house. This vacation will last a lifetime in our memories.

Warm Regards,
The Haley Family (Jeff, Christine, Cooper & Nolan)

The little house at Pripet Woods was our easily adopted home for a magical, spirit-raising, one-week getaway in late September. The house is tucked away in the pines where the first rays of morning sunlight filter through the grove of trees at the oceanfront to the living room windows. The air is fresh, and scented with the sweet and pungent fragrance of the woods mixed with the ocean mist -- just delicious!

The beach is a two-minute walk from bed to shore. The red squirrels chatter and scurry about when you get close and don’t mind if you show up in your pajamas with your morning cuppa tea. How absolutely sublime it was to be perched atop the embankment on a carpet of pine needles, sun-warmed and gazing upon a glassy ocean, and know that for one special week, it was “all ours” to have and to behold. Our first morning we caught the sunrise then prepared to launch the kayaks before the winds freshened.

We paddled north along the shore, sometimes over thick beds of ochre-yellow seaweed swaying in the swells like mermaids’ hair, to Turtle Head and Marshall Point. We saw a martin skitter between the shore ledges and looked across towards Searsport and Castine where we spotted a schooner with tanbark sails. (There’s a chart of the island and surrounding waters on the wall outside the downstairs bedroom from which we learned to plan our excursions and determine landmarks.) After use, we left the boats atop the highest part of the beach across the little stream gully with no worries.

The house is airy and open, yet cozy. We had everything we needed – full kitchen, comfy bed, hot water, and wood stove for chilly nights. Instructions were left for everything as well as plenty of information about the island and places to visit in the area.

We loved the quiet, the bird songs (listen for the ones that sing “on the hour”), the stunning minutes watching deer walk slowly by the kitchen window, that taught us to keep an eye out all over the island for plentiful wildlife, osprey, eagles, owls, and the like. We spent as much time outdoors and in our kayaks as we possibly could. We looked forward every day towards exploring the island by water -- and by road. We simply fell in love with Islesboro. At dusk, we happily came home to the cottage to relax, read, play Scrabble by the fire, or occasionally tune in the local news and weather report. We slept wonderfully well, got plenty of fresh air and sunshine, and enjoyed meeting island folk.

Cleanup and gratefully restoring everything the way we found it took only a couple of hours including washing and drying towels and bedding. When departure time came, we said farewell, but didn’t want to say good-bye as our hopes are to return again the same time next year.

Thank you K and M!
Sincerely,
Denise and Bill

I highly recommend renting the Kerr home which is located in a private area of the north end of Islesboro. This is a very comfortable new house that contains all of the amenities needed to cook good meals, wash dishes, do laundry, and sleep well in beds with firm mattresses. The home is very clean, warmly decorated and designed to accommodate various and simultaneous family activities during cozy evening hours.
The pristine setting of the home brought to mind this phrase, "A Maine Garden of Eden". Nestled among tall pine trees within a stone's throw to the beach, the home beckons one to come in and stay for awhile. But not for long. The stunning window view invites the visitor to hasten down the moss-covered path to the beach below. Little feet of children made numerous imprints on the "forest floor" while they explored tiny reflecting pools. These activities culminated in an afternoon hands-on science program skillfully created by two eight year olds.
Islesboro Island has much to offer during an extended visit. We utilized the tennis courts and excellent library. We took picnic lunches to a different beach every day. The numerous starfish on Starfish Beach especially intrigued our group. We viewed a quilt exhibition and were locally informed at the historical museum. Sodas and ice creams were consumed at the local drugstore. We even managed to reserve "The New York Times" for family members who needed to keep abreast of the fast life that was fast fading.
The Kerr home is a great find. I have a hunch it will be rented quickly each year.

My family and I truly enjoyed a relaxing week in this spacious, comfortable home. My wife and I spent many hours enjoying the beach with our children swimming and collecting shells and sea glass or watching the local lobstermen haul their traps. It's a quiet peaceful spot and we're glad we chose it for our vacation this year.
