Woodland Park House Rental Photos and Description

House, 5 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 12-14)

Sun Mountain Retreat

This spacious residence has easy access, yet it is secluded in the mountains where you bask in clean air and brilliant winter sun.

The backyard forms your own private park. You can relax while your children are engrossed with the excitement of their own secluded space. The large log playground provides swings for tiny tots to adults. Logs form a balance bridge, slide pole, a sliding board, climbing tires. The concrete basketball court has two baskets. Equipment is available to set up tether ball, volleyball or badminton. The treehouse is a cozy hide-a-way. National Forests border the property and provide hundreds of acres of hiking. A treasure map leads the adventurous through the mountains to an old gold mine and 'treasure.' There are hammocks, a campfire pit, lawn chairs, a miniature waterfall, gas grill. For winter fun there are sleds and snow tubes. We are located in the beauty of Ute Pass.

Relaxation is enriched with our spacious spa / game room. There you can soak in our hot tub where you can listen to music as you cheer on your friends playing ping pong or working out on various exercise machines. There is a child's foosball and air hockey table plus an adult foosball table and 8-foot slate pool table.

Since your vacation is a time for rest, we splurged on the bedding. Memory-foam on the mattresses provides form-fitting support. The beds are covered with fluffy down comforters. Sleep in the unique, theme-decorated bedrooms - each is an imagination experience.

'King’s Crown' room has a king-sized bed. 'Country Garden' has two queen size, canopy beds. 'Grandma’s Attic' has two twins, one of which is an adjustable bed that can be positioned for special sleeping needs. 'Wilderness Trail' has two twin beds. 'Mountain Adventure' has two twin beds inside a large tent. Finally, one of the living rooms has a queen-size hide-a-bed.

The house is specially designed to be environmentally friendly. Sun rays flood the house with toasty warmth during the winter, and in the summer the house is naturally cooled. Laundered linens are dried on a line in the fresh mountain air. Woodland Park, our nearby 'City Above the Clouds,' boasts an average of 300 sunny days per year, more than San Diego, CA or Miami Beach, FL.

In the summer the 8500 foot elebation means pleasant days and cool nights. Another benefit of our high eleveation, recent studies show that obese people can quickly lose weight and keep it off for weeks afterwards by spending time at higher altitudes.

Our expansive solar windows take advantage of the sun and clean mountain air. Through them you look on to your private yard. There is no central heating system, so on those occasional winter days when the sun is hidden, you set individual heaters in the rooms or better yet, your family will gather around your glowing fire in the wood stove. 'Roughing it' never felt so good.

The home is well stocked with a big commercial stove, bread maker, large cooking pans, commercial steamer, crock pot, blender, toaster, microwave - equipment that surpasses most home kitchens. Plus we supply a good supply of your basic staple foods so you generally need to buy mostly just meat, produce and dairy. There is baby equipment: high chair, crib, backpack baby carrier, stair guards.

We, the owners/managers live nearby so are immediately available to provide for your every need.

About Karen Magistrelli

We, Bob and Karen Magistrelli, built Sun Mountain Retreat for our family home. God carried us through the unknowns of construction - working miracles all along the way. We designed the home for kids - where they could be safe and have fun. We raised our seven children and numerous foster children here Years later we moved nearby to a home where we now take in men coming out of prison. We help the men start life over after years of isolation from society. Our income from Sun Mountain helps to provide for the needs of these men.

Karen Magistrelli purchased this house in 1985

Why Karen Magistrelli chose Woodland Park

When our family home, now Sun Mountain Retreat, was no longer needed by the family, we could not bear to sell it, despite multiple buyer requests. We love this area and we love our family home. Our seven children are grown and settling in the immediate area. Making Sun Mountain a vacation home has involved all our children. Running it has been a great joy to us as we see our guests enjoying our home as much as we did.

What makes this house unique

Our most unique offering is the wide range of fun family activities right at our home - from a private backyard park to a large indoor recreation room and spa. Our home is central to a wide range of activities. Guests can enjoy the city offerings of beautiful Colorado Springs and can also be challenged with the outdoor activities of the mountains that surround us. Our home was designed to conserve our limited natural resources - as a 'green' home our guests can know they are part of needful conservation.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I think you could easily promote 'The Lodge' as a great wedding spot. The local B & B's want to make you pay through the nose for the privilege of getting married there.

Again, thank you for providing us with the perfect place for our special day. I hope there will be future visits for us.

Ring in the New Year!

  • 5 of 5

We have rented property all over the world (literally) and this property ranks in the very top of our experiences. The location is fantastic for staging to mountain adventures or city excursions. Our hosts, Karen and Bob, went above and beyond to ensure a fantastic time was had by our little group of 11 (ages 2 and up). The home and all facilities are top rate and we have a million memories to savor until next time!

Best Christmas Ever!

  • 5 of 5

This place is everything it looks to be and more. We stayed here over the week of Christmas with all of my in-laws and it was perfect. Very family friendly. Tons of room to do cooking/baking and eating in the kitchen. Lots of activities to keep the kids entertained. Rooms were very spacious and accommodated the needed pack-n-plays without overcrowding the space. Bob and Karen were terrific, extremely responsive and a real pleasure to work with start to finish. The hot tub was AMAZING, and a universal favorite after sledding or ice skating :) The lodge came furnished with everything we could have wanted, including SUPER comfy bedding and Christmas decorations!

The wood stove was more than sufficient for heating the house, and those who preferred to be extra toasty used the space heaters. It was the perfect gathering place for us- secluded and woodsy but just a few minutes from civilization. I really could not have asked for anything more. Watching the snow fall out the large windows while drinking a hot coco, playing games and talking with family was truly a dream come true. I would whole heartedly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great place to get away with family! Thanks a ton Bob and Karen!

Thanksgiving at Sun Mountain Retreat - FANTASTIC FAMILY Vacation - November 2014

  • 5 of 5

Our experience at Sun Mountain Retreat began with a very warm welcome from Bob and Karen! We arrived earlier than expected and they both made us feel like family. We had our very well behaved furry child - Daisy - with us and Karen immediately greeted her with so much love - it warmed our hearts. The lodge is very rustic and exceptionally built for large families. The open floor plan is fabulous for family gatherings. We cooked large meals everyday to include our Thanksgiving dinner and it was so nice to watch the grandkids play in the yard while I was in the kitchen. Every morning (and various times during the day) we had the pleasure of seeing deer families grazing in the yard. While there is no cable or satellite - we were blessed with God's "TV". The beauty of nature, the mountains, and surrounded by family. The first couple days the weather was too cold for the grandchildren to play outdoors but there were plenty of inside activities and games to keep the kiddos busy. By mid week the weather was warmer and the kids and their Dad's took the challenge of hiking the mountain in search of hidden treasure. They had a great experience and found the "treasure"! The outdoor playground entertained the grandkids for many hours as well~~ We recommend this vacation home for anyone wishing to have a great family escape from the hustle bustle of the daily grind. It‘s a perfect place to experience with the important things in life - family - nature - and spirituality. There is a reason this is known as Sun Mountain truly is!

Overall a great place with only a couple minor issues. I would rent it again.

  • 5 of 5

I rented this place for 5 days for a group of Boy Scouts on the way to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. There were 4 adults in the group and 8 teenagers aged from 14 to 17 years old. Everyone in the group thought this was a great place.

What we liked:

- The arrangement and location of the rooms

- The great views of Pikes Peak from the property

- The grounds

- Convenience to attractions and food

- The pool table

- The ping pong table

- The hot tub

The only issues we had:

- The pool table needs a new surface. It is a bit old and shaggy, but unless your a professional pool player, it should not make a difference. However, it did allow for some entertaining pool shots!

- We failed to find the "treasure". Probably because of all the new vegetation growth due to a lot of rain within the previous couple weeks.

- Too much rain - we could not enjoy the patio in the evening since it rained every afternoon and/or evening.

Overall, it was a great place. If I were to bring another group out to the Colorado Springs area, I would definitely rent this place again.

Perfect Place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5

This is extremely important to anyone considering this vacation home. In looking at a possible weekend getaway with friends, we had tentatively set a date in August. I then became alarmed with this awful review and decided it needed to be checked out in person.

Quite frankly I’m shocked with the slanderous review. What I saw equals anything we’ve seen in Vail or Aspen. It is perfect. It is stunningly beautiful. Shame on them for scaring us. I’m so glad I came up. They were right the pictures don’t do it justice. It is more pleasing to the eye than I could have imagined. I told the owner that someone must be trying to sabotage them. They are booked today or I would have considered staying the rest of the weekend now that I’m up here.

Owner's Response: Thank you for questioning the "Bait and Switch" review and visiting to investigate the facts. Amazing to me that you see Sun Mountain Retreat as the "Perfect Place to Stay" when "Bait and Switch" could find nothing good. Your comment about sabotage makes me wonder. Could someone come with the intent of creating a negative image for Sun Mountain Retreat?

Bait and Switch

The pictures do not do it justice where to start. The grounds are terribly kept. From the massive buckets under the roof drainage that stink have things growing in them to the amazing tree house that hardly any one could fit into. The flat tether ball that was not able to be used. The basket ball court with two baskets one a 5 foot tall person could dunk in the other looked like if was touched it might fall over. I really appreciated the stove that had a note that the temp on the front was not always right so to turn the over up from 200-400 extra degrees to cook food and you had to open the door to look at the meat thermometer stuck in the side of the oven. The upstairs bathroom was so nasty there was black stuff on the shower curtain the walls honestly looked like they might have mold and smelled so bad that no one from our group took a shower in it. That means we had 9 people go through one tiny shower on the bottom floor that was hardly any bigger. Not to mention the shower didn't really drain so you were showering in 3-4 inches of water we even went to the nearby store and got clog remover stuff which didn't really help. At one point one of our family members had the bed fall apart in the middle of the night to find out that it was sitting on a pvc piping frame. The décor was extremely out of date the pool table looked like it was a shag carpet pool table. All of the TV's are from the 90's and yes they did have buckets and buckets full of vhs tapes to watch. The hot tub was actually really nice except it was inside the garage so after sitting in it for 5 minutes you were drenched in sweat. I would only recommend this home to some one that seeks to lock a family of 10+ into a ancient tomb void of modern amenities'

Owner's Response: We are very conscientious about providing the best possible vacation for our visitors. On a big chalkboard with our welcome message we state our phone number and say, “Please call Bob or Karen if you have any needs.” We live five-minutes away. When we were checking on the comfort of these guests, NO negative were mentioned. They were smiling and having a good time – resting from a spirited ping pong game!! I am totally confused why these guests who appeared happy and content, wanted to submit a review that is misleading at times and absolutely false other times. What did they hope to gain by such a damaging, inaccurate review? These following guestbook quotes totally contradict this review, “Everyone fell in love with the house… what a beautiful home…quiet, peaceful, comfortable, relaxing …Beautiful setting… Thoroughly enjoyed our time here... house is really cool… the game room was used every day… We had a wonderful time… What a great place you have here… We took pictures of the backyard gym and treehouse so we could build such at our cabin… Beds were sooooo comfortable… We found the cave and enjoyed the treasure… your house was a wonderful home for us… so much to offer children, they didn’t have a chance to get bored… loved seeing the wild animals… family friendly everything… Fantastic vacation setting…” We remain incredibly baffled. From this review even we wouldn’t recognize our own home. We invite you all to take your own tour and see for yourself. You will be beyond pleased. You may also "tour" our home through the video link on this site. Best regards, Look forward to seeing you in this beautiful Colorado setting.
