A great place to walk, drive, bike, swim, beachcomb, surf, snorkel or get away from it all. Sleeps 4-6. Designed by famous Early California architect Julia Morgan, this wonderfully preserved, immaculate home is a historic gem of old Carmel.

Romantic Getaway or Family Gathering: This is not a store-bought modern luxury rental--it is a beautifully maintained, enchanting little historic cottage tended with love through three generations. Perfect for a family gathering, a romantic honeymoon, or a special reunion with your best friends. Most of our guests return year after year. Our grant-aunt Etta operated the Little Cottage of River Winds as a bed and breakfast from 1919 until the 1960s, living in the tiny front bedroom and fixing meals in the galley kitchen. She offered 'breakfast in bed, lunch on the patio, and dinner by the fire.' Etta believed in a cozy cottage and a wild garden--and her spirit lives on in the charm--and sometimes the quirks--of this soulful place.

The cottage wraps its arms around you with a feeling of "family" before you have even entered the front door. This is no ordinary vacation rental experience: this place is magic, and filled with the warmth of lives well-lived in this space for almost a century. The family artwork that hangs on all the walls is beautiful and inspiring, as well as the sculptures, shell collections, family albums, children's books, games, etc. that fill the shelves. You feel like you're staying in your OWN family home while you're there. My husband particularly liked the "tool closet" off the hallway, filled with tools and useful objects of our parent's and grandparent's eras. I grew up in Carmel, and the place really reminded me of the old Carmel cottage that I grew up in. This is real old Carmel, a real family home that's been lived in for generations. Between the tranquil beauty of the pond outside, the little hidden statue of Father Serra, which you can see while you wash dishes, the lovely flow and light of the Julia Morgan architecture, the drawers full of linen and cotton tablecloths, and cabinets full of china and crystal, the cozy stone fireplace, and the family artwork... I just can't tell you how incredible this place is! The layout allows for a lot of quiet at one end of the house (for napping!) without being disturbed by noise from the kitchen or living room, ideal for children! Our three year old daughter was totally charmed by the place and didn't want to leave. I never want to stay anywhere else when I come to Carmel again! This, truly, is like coming home.

Escape from the Hustle and Bustle

This property is a nice place to go to get away from the sounds and annoyances of the city. It is situated close enough to the ocean so that you can still hear the waves crashing in, but far enough so that other tourists aren't always walking past your windows. It is a short walk to the village, the beach as well as the Mission Ranch.

Although the stone walkway is quaint and part of the overall charm of the house, it can be difficult to navigate in the dark. Better lighting or a more even surface would help this.

I understand some renovations are going to take place, so this may be a moot point. The kitchen really could use some more space, especially if you like to cook. However, there are many fabulous restaurants to go to if you don't. The living room area is comfortable and a good place to read. Perhaps a newer television would be a good addition for families with young children who bring along peripheral devices to keep them occupied.

This was our second visit as a family of five. So, overall, I would recommend this property.
