Step back in time in this rare, beautiful, original Carmel redwood cottage full of timeless charm, nestled in an enchanting garden with fireplace, stone patio, antique furniture and original art. Designed by famous Early California architect Julia Morgan, this wonderfully preserved, immaculate home is a historic gem of old Carmel.

Our Great-Aunt Etta built this cottage in 1919 and operated her own bed and breakfast here, offering 'breakfast in bed, lunch on the patio, and dinner by the fire.' Our family has lovingly cared for this beautiful redwood gem for three generations--and now are are pleased to share it with you. Experience the authentic atmosphere of old-time Carmel Point--just two blocks to Carmel Beach, four to River Beach.

The Cottage sleeps 4-6 in three bedrooms. Amenities include wireless internet, cable TV, DVD, laundry, microwave. Our wonderful caretaker lives next door. Rental by week or month (3-4 day weekends OK in winter).

Romantic Getaway or Family Gathering: This is not a store-bought modern luxury rental--it is a beautifully maintained, enchanting little historic cottage tended with love through three generations. Perfect for a family gathering, a romantic honeymoon, or a special reunion with your best friends. Most of our guests return year after year.

Our grant-aunt Etta operated the Little Cottage of River Winds as a bed and breakfast from 1919 until the 1960s, living in the tiny front bedroom and fixing meals in the galley kitchen. She offered 'breakfast in bed, lunch on the patio, and dinner by the fire.' Etta believed in a cozy cottage and a wild garden--and her spirit lives on in the charm--and sometimes the quirks--of this soulful place.

This was my first "VRBO" experience and I was very nervous booking a cottage in another country through a person I did not know and without having seen the cottage prior to renting it......but it was a wonderful experience from my first inquiry right through until the week after I arrived back home.(because the owner of the cottage was kind enough to follow up with me about my stay after I returned home!)
The cottage owner was fabulous with respects to communications, answering all my questions and putting me at ease.
The cottage was wonderful. Clean, in a perfect location with a wonderful garden patio to enjoy your morning coffee or after dinner glass of wine.
The beach is within walking distance and groceries, restaurants and a variety of shops are only minutes away; not to mention the fabulous downtown core of Carmel is only a short distance away as well.
The food is incredible, the people are friendly and there is a small town feel with people out and about walking their dogs, running, and enjoying the community they live in.
There are no words to describe the beauty of Coastal Highway #1 south of Carmel. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The Californian's have done an incredible job of keeping their coastal ridge pristine and untouched.
I will never stay in a hotel again. The Cottage is truly a home away from home. I loved it so much I have already booked for next year.

We had a great family mini-reunion at this wonderful Carmel cottage. Six of us were quite comfortable in the 3 bedroom house. We enjoyed sitting outside on the patio and also having dinners inside next to the fireplace. We could even hear the waves at night just a few blocks away. My husband liked being able to keep up with his work using the on site wi-fi! The owner was very welcoming. We'd definitely stay again!

This is a great place to stay!

Our family of six adults had a wonderful time in Carmel by the Sea. The cottage is charming and comfortable, the kitchen is well-equipped, and the gardens are beautiful. The caretaker, Doug, was very accommodating. We had the good fortune of sunny skies and high 50's to low 60's while we were there, which was perfect for our bird-watching, hiking, and beach-strolling activities. We hope we can return sometime, but we doubt the experiences we had this trip can be matched! They included spotting dozens of whales off-shore at Point Lobos, watching a bobcat stalking prey in a nearby marsh, and a fabulous meal at The Flying Fish Grill.

Cozy in the Rain

Four longtime friends spent their annual December long weekend at Cottage of River Winds on the stormiest days of the year, to date. The 1919-or-so Cottage was the perfect place to be in the inclement weather: a warm fire in the stone fireplace(take your own firelogs or firewood) and comfy chairs and sofa to sit, relax, sip wine and catch up on a year in our lives while we watched the rain pour down in the lovely old-fashioned garden. I had stayed in this cottage some years ago and it was as charming and comfortable as I remembered. It is within walking distance of Carmel Village, Carmel Point, and Carmel Beach. The Cottage may be a design of California's famed female architect, Julia Morgan; certainly it is her style. We prepared our own gourmet meals in the charming old, but up-dated kitchen. The weather did clear enough each day to allow for wonderful beach walks and when it wasn't raining, we could hear the surf from the house. We loved this place!

Charming home for relaxing family getaway.

We had six adults in our group and the Cottage met all of our expectations. We were within easy walking distance of the beach and enjoyed the garden very much. The kitchen was well stocked and we were able to prepare a great Thanksgiving dinner. The cottage was exactly as advertised.
