Step back in time in this rare, beautiful, original Carmel redwood cottage full of timeless charm, nestled in an enchanting garden with fireplace, stone patio, antique furniture and original art. Designed by famous Early California architect Julia Morgan, this wonderfully preserved, immaculate home is a historic gem of old Carmel.
Our Great-Aunt Etta built this cottage in 1919 and operated her own bed and breakfast here, offering 'breakfast in bed, lunch on the patio, and dinner by the fire.' Our family has lovingly cared for this beautiful redwood gem for three generations--and now are are pleased to share it with you. Experience the authentic atmosphere of old-time Carmel Point--just two blocks to Carmel Beach, four to River Beach.
The Cottage sleeps 4-6 in three bedrooms. Amenities include wireless internet, cable TV, DVD, laundry, microwave. Our wonderful caretaker lives next door. Rental by week or month (3-4 day weekends OK in winter).
Romantic Getaway or Family Gathering: This is not a store-bought modern luxury rental--it is a beautifully maintained, enchanting little historic cottage tended with love through three generations. Perfect for a family gathering, a romantic honeymoon, or a special reunion with your best friends. Most of our guests return year after year.
Our grant-aunt Etta operated the Little Cottage of River Winds as a bed and breakfast from 1919 until the 1960s, living in the tiny front bedroom and fixing meals in the galley kitchen. She offered 'breakfast in bed, lunch on the patio, and dinner by the fire.' Etta believed in a cozy cottage and a wild garden--and her spirit lives on in the charm--and sometimes the quirks--of this soulful place.
Our stay at Aunt Etta's cottage was just what we wanted. The cottage is comfortable, welcoming, neat as a pin and truly has all the comforts of home. It is an easy walk to the beach, to "downtown" Carmel or the mission. During our stay, the gardens were in bloom and they are beautiful. It is easy to understand why the family who owns it loves this home...it is a treasure.
Cottage was excellent. We do believe it's a Julia Morgan.
Once we figured out we should be sleeping off the kitchen
and guests should be across the hall, I felt like Randolf Hearst.
An easy stroll to both beaches, and into town too, if you want!
My wife and I wanted a really quiet holiday... away from the hustle and bustle. We committed to turning off our cell phones and not looking at a computer. But where to go? We found Krys's family cottage on-line. It looked perfect. And it was.
It is beautifully situated a few blocks from the main street in Carmel and just a 5 minutes walk to the beach. Surrounded by trees, bird of all kinds everywhere. Inside, it is spacious and totally charming. Its wood panelled rooms have clearly been the place of many happy family events. And the cottage has been lovingly cared for over the generations. It's great for a holiday getaway for two, but would also work beautifully for a family. There is lots of space and it has all the amenities.
For years my family has taken an annual vacation to Carmel. We are so happy we found this wonderful property for this year's trip. The house is delightfully Carmel, the grounds are beautiful, and the location is perfect with the beach just a block away. The very cordial owner made the experience even better and the property's manager was helpful and a delight. Wonderful memories have were created for our entire family.
The Cottage of River Winds is a true haven. That it was one of the first three structures built on Carmel Point (along with poet Robinson Jeffers’ Tor House/Hawk Tower) & that it was almost certainly designed by master architect Julia Morgan make it historically resonant, but its grace & simplicity, its generous spaces & redwood timbers, its slumber-inducing beds & sparkling bathrooms, render it a present-day miracle.
For us, as beginning birdwatchers, the short walk to Carmel River Lagoon & Wetlands Natural Preserve brought us to an avian sanctuary featuring an endless array of water birds & shore dwellers. We saw Canada geese, brown pelicans, buffleheads, mallards & coots, cormorants, marbled godwits, elegant terns & long-billed curlews, sandpipers & sanderlings, wrentits, & spotted & California towhees. We were delirious with new species!
Although Carmel-by-the-Sea has grown increasingly touristic, the Cottage of River Winds transports you back to a time when this little village was host to novelists & poets, painters, sculptors, & stonemasons, & the atmosphere was serene & crackling with creative energies. You can still sense, as Robinson Jeffers has written:
How beautiful when we first beheld it,
Unbroken field of poppy and lupin walled with clean cliffs;
No intrusion but two or three horses pasturing,
Or a few milch cows rubbing their flanks on the outcrop rock-heads—
beautiful rustic property on lovely landscaped yard.. excellent location- can walk to both Carmel beaches... charming historic house loaded with character.. after going to Monterey Aquarium, Point Lobos or down to Big Sur- would sit and have wine in garden.. lovely and would definitely return
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the River Winds Cottage. Krys is a delight to work with, and although she isn’t on site, she stayed in touch frequently to be certain we had everything we needed. We didn’t meet the on-site manager, but his presence was obvious as the cottage was well appointed and in great shape. We stayed with another couple and had plenty of room and privacy. The cottage itself has a rich history, and the neighborhood is wonderfully secluded and quiet. We had two beach choices just a short walk away. Carmel Beach State Park to the north is much busier than our preference, the Carmel River State Beach to the south, which was very quiet and provided our own private getaway. We visited in February, so this may have been a seasonal thing. For a great place to stay while enjoying Carmel and Monterey, we couldn’t have made a better choice than the River Winds Cottage.
Carmel Point, the most beautiful meeting of land and sea on God's green earth. Just a few miles from Point Lobos State Park and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Walking distance to old Carmel Mission, Robinson Jeffers' Tor House, and the beautiful beaches of Carmel Bay.
Other Activities: Tide pooling, Monterey Bay Aquarium
