A very special house in a gorgeous location

Unjaded NYer Larchmont, NY
Review Submitted: May 8, 2008 Date of Stay: April 2008
We loved this place. Stayed for one week with our 2 children, ages 12 & 15. (Definitely would NOT recommend this house for family with small children!) The house is very comfortable and quite unique in terms of design. The neighborhood is incredibly peaceful and quiet. The 360 degree views from the property are magnificent. We loved going up to the roof deck for breakfast (with no sounds other than the birds chirping) and sunsets. We felt that the slightly "remote" location was well worth the inconvenience of being outside of town. (It's an easy 10 - 15 minute drive into downtown Santa Fe.) We used the house as a base for exploring the Santa Fe/Taos/Albuquerque area and had a great time. Our only disappointment with the house was the fact that the gorgeous pool, with its "passive solar heating", was way too cold to stay in for more than 10 or 15 minutes. It had been a selling point of the house for us, and our kids would have loved to spend more time in it.
Otherwise,....go for it!
Owner's Response: The pool is usually only solar heated and the temperature depends on ambient conditions. There is usually no problem from May to September but the temperature different people prefer also varies very much. I offer back up heat if people are willing to pay for it and provide an one month notice (propane is very expensive these days and it needs advance notice with the company).

Misleading

aqm United States
Review Submitted: August 5, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
Although we were very much looking forward to this vacation, it did not turn out as we expected. The house is in a spectacular setting, no doubt. However, everything else was less than anticipated. This house was not well maintained and as I review the pictures posted here on the website, they look like they must be from several years ago. The kitchen was old, dilapidated and dirty. The stove was greasy and unusable. The floors were dirty. The bathrooms were old, tiles moldy and left with used soap and other bathroom toiletries. The bedrooms were both downstairs, dark, cavey, and damp. One had a trundle bed that two adults could not comfortably sleep on. So they had to sleep on a blow up mattress in the living room. There was mold on several of the walls of the house. The pool was dirty, and the owner was told before we even arrived, but the pool maintenance staff didn't arrive until our last day there. The outside of the house, the "garden" area, was overgrown and impossible to sit in, looking nothing like the pictures. Water was spewing from timed hoses set up to water plants. I felt this was a real waste of a valuable southwestern resource. The tennis court was a mile away and it had a lock on the gate that luckily a neighbor was able to open for us.
Owner's Response: This review is not in good faith. These people sought discounts from the beginning and the minute they arrived in the house (with only partial success). They arrived to the house and instead of enjoying their vacation they started cataloguing all the stuff they did not like! They were late in submitting their payment and they damaged the kitchen and other parts of the house where they had no business fiddling with things. I sent the cleaning woman to clean a second time under their direction immediately after they asked and the pool was cleaned by my house caretaker. The cleaning woman was given a hard time-- she was even asked why is the toilet brush old?(!) The only way to take care of the landscaping around the house is by sprinkler and drip irrigation since tenants are not exactly willing to irrigate themselves and they do not like gardeners coming around, privacy matters to most people... The sprinklers come up only for a short time during the day and these are the first people to be bothered by them! In their great taste for decoration they set up the main living room as a bedroom using my inflatable queen-size bed. All the small towels disappeared (were disposed of?)and all the 100-so towels in the house were used up in one week... To top it all they submitted this review!

Pleasant & Peaceful Surprise

Doctor J Dallas, TX
Review Submitted: June 14, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
We had a wonderful time during our three night stay here. The roof garden deck is one of the top highlights. As mentioned by some, it was very serene and peaceful. A great place to enjoy breakfast in the morning and the stars at night. As we both enjoy cooking, we were able to utilize both kitchen and grill over two nights. No distractions and no temptations to be elsewhere. I would recommend highly as a romantic gateway and/or place to escape the hustle and bustle. The panaromic views alone will make it memorable. And, it serves as a great base camp for exploring Santa Fe and the surrounding areas. A hike at Ghost Ranch is recommended and you still have time to return in the same day and enjoy the house. We would absolutely consider a return to this location in the future.

Totally re-charged

nepenthe13 chicago, IL
Review Submitted: July 11, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
What house ever lives up to its pictures? In the case of this one, it exceeds the pictures. How can I describe what it feels like to sit out on the roof deck overlooking the sage brush at a sky filled with stars? Total peace, quiet, serenity and privacy. More amazing still was the feeling of water that pervades this house. Water is reflected throughout this house thanks to a truly spectacular papyrus studded indoor lap pool. Also too there is the delightful steam of a sauna. the desert, the water and the blue blue sky. Astonishing what a week here did for me. It was like staying in a spa. But unlike any spa, the house was filled with the most intriguing artifacts from around the world. This house isn't merely a vacation, it is another world. All this, and a home theatre equipped giant screen tv to bring the world back to you. A total wow.

Spectacular view, a great vacation home

Mary & Jeff Columbus OH
Review Submitted: July 9, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
This is a great home for those Santa Fe area vacationers looking for restful, peaceful accommodations. We were met by a lovely lady who showed us around and answered all of our questions. The spacious home has everything you'll need--a fully stocked kitchen, comfy bed, clean bathrooms, plenty of towels & linens, and a variety of outdoor areas for relaxing. The pool is very clean too. It's a little chilly but once you get in, you'll love it! The home is very close to town and provides a great starting point no matter where your travels take you in NM. There is wireless throughout the house which came in handy in planning day trips and plenty of outlets to power up laptops. We loved the rooftop patio and spent many evenings watching the sun go down behind the mountains. Thanks to the owner who takes such pride in his home and making this a vacation to remember. We hope to come back again next year. Thanks again for a great getaway!
