Might be tolerable in the winter, but it was a long hot dirty week in July 2010
We rented this property during the summer from 7/6 – 7/11/2010. The home is extremely large and spacious, with many bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. The great room has five ceiling fans, a ping pong table, a basketball game and a foosball table. Two of the bedrooms have ceiling fans as well. The advantages of this property as a summer rental stop there (and if you prefer clean, we wouldn’t recommend this as a winter rental either).
This property has no form of air conditioning, which is certainly no fault of the owner and is not misrepresented in any way. However, we happened to be there during a week of high humidity and 90+ degree weather. Although the owner stated the home's many windows and ceiling fans adequately address hot weather concerns, even with the additional fans we brought from home, there was minimal circulation through the house and it was WAY too hot to be enjoyable for most of the week. One of the bunk bed bedrooms had no ventilation at all. The single window appeared to have been jammed or broken, and was unable to be raised open. So, in the heat, no one could sleep in that room. There were two other bedroom windows that had no screens in them (one of which also had no ceiling fan and a cathedral ceiling). We found a couple of screens in the garage that we put in, but we certainly shouldn't have had to do that ourselves. Other windows in the kitchen were also jammed closed and/or without screens so it was too hot to cook in the kitchen several of the nights.
The décor of the home is rustic. Way rustic. Rustic isn't awful, but there were things that we thought were aberrant from what one would reasonably expect, along the lines of basic cleanliness and functionality. The windows themselves, when raised up, were filthy and loaded with cobwebs and dead bugs. The floors may have been quickly swept clean, but certainly not mopped. There was dust, dirt and cobwebs in many corners and spaces, on dresser tops, behind stereo speakers, and so on. The tablecloth had remnants of past meals on it, and we washed it ourselves. The toilets were not very clean, although their dark colors (hunter green and maroon) disguised a lot. The basement has a blue sleeper sofa in it that brings to mind scenes from a college fraternity house, complete with questionable stains on it. Those same questionable stains were also found on several bed comforters (at least three)... In short, OK for a bunch of college boys, but not for us.
Owner's Response: We do not know where to begin, after 8 years of successful vacation rentals! In that time, we have recieved no reviews of any kind on any website prior to this. We did enjoy, as with our previous guests, an amiable, complaint free relationship with this guest, until now, when these complaints have been raised for the first time. We are very sorry that Sarah did not enjoy the home, and would have welcomed contact from her during her stay - we could have helped! We want to respond that our basement has an old sleeper couch (green actually) with a cover on it as a courtesy (read: extra furniture) in case our guests happen to have an extra friend or two stop by (its in the basement...). Other than that couch, the entire home was completely refurnished with NEW furnture, mattresses, linens etc in September 2009. We agree that 90 degree plus days are just plain hot, no matter where you are staying. We have since, prior to this complaint and on our own accord, installed central A/C in order to make it more comfortable for our guests. There was a window in a bunk room that had become very tight and had swelled in the intense humidity, making it hard to open, and that was replaced upon discovery of that deficiency. This has largely been a ski season rental over the years, so I guess the "summer advantages" Sarah was looking for were missing, but we certainly have them now! Iam not sure how to respond the accusation that home is "rustic". It was built in the mid 80's and early 90's, and is finished largely in knotty pine throughout, and that is apparent in all of our pictures...it is completely modern in terms of amenities, baths, kitchens, etc, it is simply finished in knotty pine. I have never heard the term "rustic' applied to this home. I have heard "Adirondack style" or " knotty pine finish" or "country home", however. We hope that this subject view of this style does not undermine the interest of future guests. With respect to cleanliness, we cannot, at this time, speak to what this guest did or did not find upon arrival since we are 30 days past the rental. We apologize if the home was not cleaned to her satisfaction, and, if so, would have gladly remedied the situation if she had brought this to our attention at the beginnning of or at any time during her stay. We welcome all potential guests to contact us with any specific questions regarding this review or anything about our home. For over 8 years, scores of happy guests have enjoyed our home.
