DISAPPOINTING PROPERTY

  • 2 of 5
My family rented this house over the new year's holiday 2011-2012

This property was not clean. We had to do cleaning in the kitchen including the refrigerator, microwave toaster etc. The kitchen was not properly equipped with enough utensils, knives bowls etc.

The bed linens were not ready until 9pm and there was a problem with the locks and no key was provided until the 2nd day.

There was garbage piled in the garage that smelled awful on the day we arrived. We were there for six days, there was no garbage pick-up during that time.

Hot tub was not working properly, would not get HOT!, circuit breaker kept tripping. Owner knew about the problem but did not alert us beforehand or offer compensation

House is advertised as 4.5 miles to mountain, it is 8 full miles by car.

There were no fire extinguishers in kitchen or anywhere on first floor. While we were there, a small fire started from a candle on the kitchen counter, we were lucky enough to put it out without the benefit of an extinguisher.

Owner kept all of our deposit for the burn in the counter top without supplying proof of cost for the repair.

Owner does not return phone calls in a timely fashion and sometimes does not return them at all.

We do not recommend this property

Owner's Response: We found it disappointing that our guests found reasons to be dissatisfied with their stay a week after their departure, upon learning that they would not receive their security deposit back. Unfortunately, as customer has informed us, that during their stay, lit candles fell into a bowl of popcorn, which allegedly burst into flames, and then fell onto the counter top in the kitchen, damaging the surface beyond repair (we are not sure why this might be our fault...?). This is of course the reason for a security deposit, however additional issues seem to arise that were not discussed before hand. In fact, our guests did not inform us of this fire in our home at all, until we called to inquire as to the origins of the damage. At that time, the complaints above were raised. Should any of the issues above been the case upon move in, and were a detriment to their stay, we would gladly have addressed them upon learning of the situation. We would like to avoid a point-counter point type of exchange here, in the interest of geniality, but would like to point out only that the house was prepared upon their arrival with only the exception that one bedroom's linens were still in the dryer and the cleaning person had to return at the end of the cycle to prepare it for them. At that time, the Guests were very friendly and chatted with her for some time. Our cleaning person and manager lives on property next door, and was certainly available to address any concerns, and in fact did stop in to check on at least one occasion. No issues were raised. We did check, and there are 14 forks in the drawer...We have rented out our home for over 10 years and have had a great following of returning guests. We consider it unfortunate that this sentiment came to light after the damage was brought to light, as our relationship had been cordial and cooperative until that point. Thank you for your review, and we hope that future guests will understand that these circumstances are certainly not typical of our rental experience.

GREAT BERKSHIRE HOUSE

  • 5 of 5
A group of 10 adults stayed here quite comfortably for the weekend to go ziplining in Charlemont. We had a fabulous time. The house is situated in a beautiful area just across the New York border with a lake in the back yard and hiking nearby. We enjoyed the hot-tub Saturday night and found the owner to be very responsive to our requests. We would definitely come back again.

GREAT STAY, GREAT PLACE, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

  • 5 of 5
On our arrival, the house appeared as depicted in the ad. Area is very country, and quiet with few neighbors. The house is quite large. We shared the house with another family and did not feel cramped at all. Although the temperature was in 60's at the beginning of the week, the central air came in handy on a few occasions. Greatest features are the indoor hot tub and playroom above the garage. Children enjoyed those aspects of the home very much, especially on a rainy day. Bedrooms are adequate, 1 bath on 2nd floor, 1/2 bath on main floor and one in basement. There is a rear deck off the house that is great for barbecues and just relaxing. Grounds are very picturesqe. There is a barn on the property which is rented to a very nice family but they keep to themselves. Cherry Plain State Park is nearby via dirt access road or longer drive via highway. Great place for swimming and rowboats. Jiminy Peak Resort is very closeby. Pittsfield, where we did most of our shopping is 20 minutes away. Golf courses are nearby just over Mass border. Our stay was fantastic. The owner, Todd, was extremely helpful and answered all of our questions. Highly recommend for skiing and summer use.

MIGHT BE TOLERABLE IN THE WINTER, BUT IT WAS A LONG HOT DIRTY WEEK IN JULY 2010

  • 2 of 5
We rented this property during the summer from 7/6 – 7/11/2010. The home is extremely large and spacious, with many bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. The great room has five ceiling fans, a ping pong table, a basketball game and a foosball table. Two of the bedrooms have ceiling fans as well. The advantages of this property as a summer rental stop there (and if you prefer clean, we wouldn’t recommend this as a winter rental either).
This property has no form of air conditioning, which is certainly no fault of the owner and is not misrepresented in any way. However, we happened to be there during a week of high humidity and 90+ degree weather. Although the owner stated the home's many windows and ceiling fans adequately address hot weather concerns, even with the additional fans we brought from home, there was minimal circulation through the house and it was WAY too hot to be enjoyable for most of the week. One of the bunk bed bedrooms had no ventilation at all. The single window appeared to have been jammed or broken, and was unable to be raised open. So, in the heat, no one could sleep in that room. There were two other bedroom windows that had no screens in them (one of which also had no ceiling fan and a cathedral ceiling). We found a couple of screens in the garage that we put in, but we certainly shouldn't have had to do that ourselves. Other windows in the kitchen were also jammed closed and/or without screens so it was too hot to cook in the kitchen several of the nights.
The décor of the home is rustic. Way rustic. Rustic isn't awful, but there were things that we thought were aberrant from what one would reasonably expect, along the lines of basic cleanliness and functionality. The windows themselves, when raised up, were filthy and loaded with cobwebs and dead bugs. The floors may have been quickly swept clean, but certainly not mopped. There was dust, dirt and cobwebs in many corners and spaces, on dresser tops, behind stereo speakers, and so on. The tablecloth had remnants of past meals on it, and we washed it ourselves. The toilets were not very clean, although their dark colors (hunter green and maroon) disguised a lot. The basement has a blue sleeper sofa in it that brings to mind scenes from a college fraternity house, complete with questionable stains on it. Those same questionable stains were also found on several bed comforters (at least three)... In short, OK for a bunch of college boys, but not for us.

Owner's Response: We do not know where to begin, after 8 years of successful vacation rentals! In that time, we have recieved no reviews of any kind on any website prior to this. We did enjoy, as with our previous guests, an amiable, complaint free relationship with this guest, until now, when these complaints have been raised for the first time. We are very sorry that Sarah did not enjoy the home, and would have welcomed contact from her during her stay - we could have helped! We want to respond that our basement has an old sleeper couch (green actually) with a cover on it as a courtesy (read: extra furniture) in case our guests happen to have an extra friend or two stop by (its in the basement...). Other than that couch, the entire home was completely refurnished with NEW furnture, mattresses, linens etc in September 2009. We agree that 90 degree plus days are just plain hot, no matter where you are staying. We have since, prior to this complaint and on our own accord, installed central A/C in order to make it more comfortable for our guests. There was a window in a bunk room that had become very tight and had swelled in the intense humidity, making it hard to open, and that was replaced upon discovery of that deficiency. This has largely been a ski season rental over the years, so I guess the "summer advantages" Sarah was looking for were missing, but we certainly have them now! Iam not sure how to respond the accusation that home is "rustic". It was built in the mid 80's and early 90's, and is finished largely in knotty pine throughout, and that is apparent in all of our pictures...it is completely modern in terms of amenities, baths, kitchens, etc, it is simply finished in knotty pine. I have never heard the term "rustic' applied to this home. I have heard "Adirondack style" or " knotty pine finish" or "country home", however. We hope that this subject view of this style does not undermine the interest of future guests. With respect to cleanliness, we cannot, at this time, speak to what this guest did or did not find upon arrival since we are 30 days past the rental. We apologize if the home was not cleaned to her satisfaction, and, if so, would have gladly remedied the situation if she had brought this to our attention at the beginnning of or at any time during her stay. We welcome all potential guests to contact us with any specific questions regarding this review or anything about our home. For over 8 years, scores of happy guests have enjoyed our home.
