This is the first time I have used VRBO to book a home for vacation and I would not hesitate to do it again based on my dealings with the owner of this wonderful home. The house was everything that we were promised it would be. The owners were super nice and available for any and all questions. This house is fully stocked with dishes, towels etc. All of the amenities of home! We very much enjoyed the outdoor fire pit and sat outside every single night. Not having cell service was the only down side but what the heck, who needs a cell phone while you are relaxing in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The home is VERY private but still close to town, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park (where we saw HUNDREDS of buffalo and it was so awesome)! There were five people in our group which worked perfectly. One more would have been fine but any more than that and I think we would have liked a third bathroom :) Overall, it was a wonderful location, beautiful property/home! We will definitely be back to the Black Hills again some day!
The house outside of Custer was spacious and comfortable for my mother, my wife and I, and our infant son. It could easily accommodate several more. Unlike some rentals, the pantry was nicely stocked with basics -- we didn't need to bring a salt shaker, say -- and we made use of the large gas grill out back and the fire pit under the stars. The home is situated about a mile down a hard packed road on a large piece of property in the national forest, and is very private. It's a 10-minute drive to Custer, which was convenient, and not much further in the other direction to Wyoming. We had other relatives staying in the area, and were able to entertain 10 people very comfortably. The horseshoes and stakes are fun. Our only issue was with communication, because our cell phones had no reception and the home phone would only dial local numbers (not our relatives' mobiles). And while the home does have wireless internet, the connection was a little spotty. So I wouldn't plan to do a lot of business there, but that's not why I go to the Black Hills. I look forward to renting it again on my next visit.
Eight of us spent a week at this house and had a fantastic time. The home is well outfitted for families and is close to many sightseeing opportunities and activities including Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse, Wind Cave and 1880 Railroad. We were very comfortable in the home and the layout works well with a bigger group. The owners were very easy to work with and helpful in providing information on activities, their favorite restaurants and things to do in the area. The Black Hills are beautiful with lots of opportunities to hike, view animals and enjoy outdoor activities. We would highly recommend this rental to anyone with a large family or group looking to get away and enjoy outdoor adventures.
We loved this place. We are very familiar with the Black Hills area as we have been going there for over 40 years, and have family members of my wife retired just outside of Custer City. This home is beautifully located, and very comfortable with lots of room inside and out for entertaining and just lounging comfortably. The bunk house does have ample space if you need it for sleeping, but the absence of anything to entertain younger ones there prior to bed time is a deterrent to use. There is no bathroom in the bunk house, so you better not have to use those services during the night, or you will have to go outside and walk 35 yards to the house in the dead of night. Probably not going to work for young ones. We love the outdoors with camping, hunting, 4-wheel ATV off-roading etc, and love our nights outdoors with the fire pit and the stars, so again, this place is awesome for that. Even with that, we still love to stay attached to the outside world in our downtime once play is done. We play hard, but we are also a high energy, modern business family who is "tethered" to our cell phone and high speed Internet for business connectivity. Running eight miles into Custer to find a Wi-Fi signal might work for some, but that's entirely inconvenient, and not how we roll. This home has no cell phone coverage signal, and we are used to that in some places in the mountains; we could deal with that if Internet was available to fill the communication gap. Currently, the home has NO Internet except for dial up, and that didn't work, and even if it did, that technology is so outdated, it couldn't serve the needs at all. I don't want this to sound negative, because the positives far out weigh the negatives. Great home and location and the owners are gracious and accommodating. We would highly recommend the home to others. We will definitely place this location high on our list for our next stay there, but hope a high speed Internet connection is part of the package then. Try this place out!!
Very pleased with our stay at this property. We saw deer every morning and the stars at night were terrific.
Description of property was accurate.
Photos accurately reflected the appearance and amenities.
The property was clean and well-maintained. We had an issue with the dryer not working during our stay but understood from the owner that this had only recently been brought to their attention and they had arranged for repair. This wasn't a big issue for us during our stay as there was plenty of space on back porch (and beautiful weather!) to dry our wash.
The owner's communication was terrific. Timely and clear responses throughout the transaction.
Would certainly recommend this property to friends and family. All of those on our trip agreed that it would be a terrific property to which we could return in the future. There was hearty agreement that staying out away from town enhanced everyone's vacation.
We spent a number of days there. We enjoyed Wind Cave National Park (30-40 minute drive), Mount Rushmore (same), Jewel Cave National Monument (5 minutes), Harney Peak Trail (30 minutes) and Devil's Tower (2 hours). Our favorite restaurant in Custer was the Sage Creek Grill.
