HAWI HAVEN was a PERFECT vantage point from which to enjoy surprise 80th birthday party for Aunty Dixie Kinoshita, visit graves of Barbara's grandparents who came from Hiroshima to work the cane fields, see remains of the old company store near abandoned mill, whale watch at Kapaa Park, see world's BIGGEST, BRIGHTEST RAINBOWS, hear and see John and Hope Keawe's guitar and hula, browse Jan and Frank Morgan's splendid bookstore in Kapaau, shop the Takata store, enjoy fresh fish at Aunty's and fabulous Lilikoi margarita at Bamboo. Web site understates the totality of amenities in this wonderful home.
I wanted to thank you – we had an unbelievable time on the island, and being able to stay at Hawi Haven was truly a huge part of that experience. The house was more than we could have hoped for and more than what any big name resort could ever offer; it was comfortable, quiet, the interior was really well done – truly a place you could come home to. We passed through Kailua on the way back to North Kohala , and were overwhelmed by all the tourists and all the establishments catering to them – it made us even more grateful that we were able to find our own little tucked away spot in Hawi. Thank you again for such a wonderful house!
We spent three weeks from mid-February into early March 2015. There were four of us (two couples) so we had lots of room and were very, very comfortable throughout our stay. We were told that the frequent, heavy evening and early morning rains this year were quite unusual. Hawi seems to be in the transition zone between the arid Kona side and wet north/east sides of the island. We only had to drive 5 miles back towards Kona for the sun to reappear. Hawi is a quaint, small town, which we were told by locals is in the midst of a lot of change with more and more tourists finding out about it. We purposely did not want to stay in the congested resorts/condos found along the Kona Coast. Hawi Haven was recommended to us by friends who've stayed there about 5 times in the past several years. Their recommendation proved to be a good one. The house is fully outfitted with just about anything you would ever need, right down to band aids and sunscreen. The kitchen has tons of room and storage, and all the appliances/cookware you could possibly need. Hawi is in the northeastern corner of the island so we took some very long day trips during our 3-week stay to visit sites we really wanted to get to (Hawaiian Volcanoes NP, Summit of Mauna Kea for sunset). We spaced these longer trips out over our stay so that the long days did not come one after the other. It was just so nice to return to Hawi Haven to kick back and relax. This kind of quieter island experience is probably not for everyone (like if you're looking to go out partying and dancing nightly) but we loved it and plan on returning! And no, three weeks didn't feel like too long a time. The owners were very responsive to our requests while making our arrangements, and clearly have pride in their property.
My family and I, wife and two young children, stayed at the Hawi Haven for two weeks this past January. Lovely place, lovely, responsive owner and very kid friendly - lots of beach toys to play with. We love Hawi and truly enjoyed staying in the center of this bustling little town. There were no late party noises from town, just a quiet little slice of heaven at the end of the rainbow.
The "real Hawaii" that we treasure ... We are repeat customers, and always greatly appreciate the wonderful location (walking distance to Hawi and nice, family-oriented restaurants (recommend reservations), fruit markets, and quaint / authentic shops. The Hawi House is comfortable, spacious, and exudes a sense of tranquility... far from the rush of tourists in Kona. Drive to nearby spectacular parks and hikes. The folks in Hawi were friendly and laid back ... grocery store is nearby if you choose to eat meals at home. The house is well-stocked with guidebooks and information, plus snorkeling gear and bikes in the garage. We look forward to our next trip...
We've been back now 3 or 4 times. It's walkable to stores and restaurants in Hawi and a short drive to a few more places to eat and shop in the Kohala area. Even though it's basically almost in the middle of Hawi town it's fairly quiet. The house is not super-luxury but it's well appointed and very comfy and has everything you need, and the caretaker Giovanna is easy to reach if you need help.
Mahalo nui loa for a perfect family place to stay during our recent trip to Hawi. We attended a surprise birthday party for our Aunty and besides the great location, it was a quiet place for my father (who wasn't feeling well) to rest. Because we lived there in the 60's, it was a great time for my father and his children to share stories and relive memories with the next generation of our family. The house was more than we ever expected!!!!! It was so comfortable, the décor gave us a few ideas for our own house, the kitchen area AMAZING with everything and more we needed! We rode bikes to the farmer's market right across the street and gathered all fresh ingredients for our smoothies....as well as many local favorites. We are so grateful for the hospitality and aloha from the owners as well as the caretaker. We have told many people about Hawi Haven and we will certainly be back to enjoy this home. Mahalo nui loa.
