Hi! I'm Catherine Bennett, a full-time real estate broker. After showing and selling dozens of waterfront properties, it was time to find a waterfront getaway for my husband and me, and our Old English Sheepdog Fanny! Robert is an architect, professional engineer and Class A contractor so renovating this home was a delight for us. We're constantly updating and decorating, and are eager to share this special property with you.
Catherine Bennett, Broker-Owner purchased this house in 2001
This property appealed to us because:
First, it is located right on the Corrotoman River, my favorite because it is very clean and excellent for fishing and boating. It is THE river for sailboaters! By 'right on the water', I mean it is built about 25 feet from the water. Waterfront homes are now allowed to be built no closer than 100 feet from the waterfront.
Second, it has an amazing tidal pond that serves as a grocery store for the local waterfowl and a habitat for ducks, otter, and other fascinating woodland creatures. You'll be amazed at the drama that nature unveils daily, including the awesome birdwatching right here on the Atlantic flyway.
Third, it has a floorplan that makes it cozy for a couple or excellent for more people with gathering space and spread out spaces. Two fireplaces make it really cozy and the wrap around porch with screened porch below make outdoor living in Virginia's excellent weather ideal. And because I love tall rooms, the vaulted ceiling in the front half of the first floor makes it wonderful! Downstairs, there's a great place for your computer work while being out of the main living area.
Fourth, it has woods on two sides, the river on the third side and on the fourth side, up the hill, is a lovely neighbor. You can't get much more privacy! Fish Tales is 1.3 acres, including the tidal pond that is accreting, the opposite of eroding!
Fifth, it is in Corrotoman By The Bay, a wonderful little community with very nice swimming pool, free exercise equipment and wi-fi at the clubhouse, playground, and many other features. Parties, parades and other events are highlights of this area.
Most guests comment on the incredible views throughout the house of one of the most beautiful rivers in Virginia. There's occasional kayakers, fishing boats and sailboats that distract you from the awesome birds and wildlife who live on and follow the river.
They also love how beautiful the house is and the wooded setting. Best of all, they love that we welcome your family dog! The picture is of Robert with our darling Old English Sheepdog, Fanny, enjoying a few minutes of happy time in the living room.
Thank you so much for letting us rent Fish Tales! We had so much fun. I love how much detail you put into every room. Your online pictures really don't do this place justice because it is so much prettier in person. Even the dogs loved it! Dad loved crabbing (when he caught some), Heather (my sister) loved the pool, my aunt loved helping my dad crab (most of the time she had better luck than he did), Mom loved watching the way the sun reflects on the water, and I loved taking pictures of nearly everything. The little red sailboat absolutely fascinates me! Do people still use it? Mom and I think it is just for show. We even named a snake that comes to the cove right beside the deck. His name is Sssteeeree haha! We all wish we could stay longer, but unfortunately we have to leave. I hope you like the sign that we made. Until next time...
We were delighted with this house, and enjoyed a very relaxing vacation. The VRBO rental process was easy, and Catherine was very helpful. About half of our days here were rainy, but we didn't mind because there are an incredible number of books, fiction and non-fiction, as well as games, televisions, wifi, and places to doze off and relax.
Catherine provides more than the typical rental home owner to make your stay carefree. The house was clean & well-stocked, and the view from the deck is soothing. Be sure you get up in time for a sunrise or two.
One note: the kitchen is small but has most everything you will need, but there is no conventional oven - just the large convection oven on the counter, so my large muffin pan would not fit. Just be prepared for smaller projects if you want to do any baking.
Fish Tales has a large, comfortable den on the bottom level with a huge flat-screen TV, a mid-level living room with water views & TV, and a larger-than-expected loft on the top level that also has comfortable seating & TV. This allowed us to find quiet spots when we wanted to spend solitary time reading or working (or napping). The wifi service worked very well.
The upper deck is huge, and the lower level has a screened porch with comfortable seating. You easily forget that you are in a neighborhood, because the setting feels very secluded.
We would certainly welcome the opportunity to stay at Fish Tales again, and the dog agrees!
We all needed a break from it all, and Fish Tales fit the bill. It's not a fancy house, but the views and deck were wonderful, with some amazing sunrises. The beds were comfy, the showers plenty hot, and the kitchen well stocked. The kayak was a very popular item. It was easy to make trips into town for daily needs. As with all rentals, it could use a hard end-of-season cleaning which is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5.
The owner was very helpful with activity suggestions and we appreciated the welcome gift!
Thank you, Catherine!
This was our first time renting a place and it was fabulous. We wanted somewhere we could bring our dog and just have a relaxing vacation with our boys, and this is the place. We are planning on renting here again in 2015. Love, Love , Love it. Thank you so much.
We loved the quiet and peacefulness of the river sounds and the wind in the leaves. This place was a great mix of water and woods...the best of both worlds...and our dogs were able to enjoy it with us! It truly was picturesque, with a Heron that came into the cove every morning and evening and even a Bald Eagle flew into the trees. It was a perfect get-away from our hectic lives and a 40th birthday celebration. The house layout was ideal for me, as it had a bathroom, refrigerator, seating, and TV or things to do on every floor...I have some limited mobility and am very slow on stairs. Catherine was very sweet and had an eastern shore goodie basket with a virginia wine and snacks. Sooo very kind and easy to book and schedule with her. The house was a nice mix of comfortable, classic river house with some nice renovations in the bathrooms and an open living room kitchen area that had a perfect view to the river. Already talking with friends and family about a return visit.
This is my families first time renting a house, and all I can say is we were not disappointed. Fish Tales is absolutely beautiful inside and out. Our twin boys had so much fun either fishing, playing tennis, swimming in the water or pool or just hanging inside playing games. My husband and I relaxed while we too fished, swam, and hung out as a family. The one thing I loved about this destination, is there was no hustle bustle, We just got to relax. We did do a days trip to Kings Dominion which was fabulous, but other than that we really liked being at the house. The real icing on the cake was that we got to bring our dog, Venus. She is such a large part of our family that it was wonderful to have her with us.
I just can't say enough good things about Fish Tales it was absolutely terrific!!
Love this place. This latest stay was our third and we intend to return yet again. We've been in Fall, Summer and now early Spring. Not sure which we enjoyed the most because the place is well suited for all times of the year. Fireplaces are fabulous when it's cold and the place is well heated and cooled. The community pool is fantastic in Summer and our son was in the water virtually all day making friends and having a blast. There are bikes for use and we loved cycling around the area on them. Very little traffic. The house is kept very clean and the area is extremely quiet. We haven't tried many of the local eateries as we tend to cook and the kitchen is well stocked and very easy to use...the view while cooking is beautiful. The chef never felt sequestered away while working. We should also mention the piano. More fun... And of course this place isn't far from all sorts of historical places like Williamsburg. We really can't think of any negatives worth mentioning. The only one might be the poor cell phone signal we got there but now we understand there is high speed wifi so...
