Overview

Pepeekeo House Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedroom, 3 Bathroom, 3 acre private residence; Sleeps 6

Enjoy spectacular 180-degree ocean views from every room of this beautifully remodeled plantation-style home. Extensive use of beautiful Shoji screens and a traditional Furo tub in the master bath highlight this retreat-like home set on three lush acres. A traditional zendo (Buddhist meditation area) adds to the serenity of the atmosphere.

The house is surrounded by park-like landscaping with almost an acre of manicured lawns dotted with tropical fruit trees, coconut and banana palms in almost continuous production, and gorgeous orchids and plumeria. Help yourself to papayas, guavas, bananas, coconuts, pineapples and avocados and other delicious tropical fruits (there's almost always something ripe and ready to pick). The hillside location and surrounding acreage grant a high degree of privacy and the electric-gated entry assures security. The house is well-stocked with all necessary kitchen supplies, videos and a variety of books including several excellent local guidebooks.

Cable television and wireless, high-speed internet access are included for those who don't want to be too disconnected from the 'real world'.

The Hamakua coast offers unparalleled outdoor activities including nearby Akaka Falls, Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens, and beautiful hiking trails. Four-Mile Scenic drive is just a few blocks away, along with beautiful Onomea Bay. We are located minutes from Honoli'i, one of the Big Island's best surfing spots. The area is laced with streams, waterfalls and swimming holes, all against a backdrop of lush tropical vegetation. Located just one mile from the dramatic sea cliffs of Pepeekeo Point, the house is ideally located for exploration of the Big Island. Volcanoes National Park is only 45 minutes away, as is the Waipio Valley to the north. Kailua-Kona is a 90 minute drive. The windward side's best swimming beaches are a short drive.

Hilo offers its unique blend of Old-Hawaii charm and modern conveniences, shopping and restaurants. The Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays should not be missed! A tremendous variety of handicrafts from all over the islands are available at some of the best prices to be found. Local produce in all its wonderful variety abounds. The Lyman Museum and the Tsunami Museum are also well worth a visit.

PLEASE NOTE: the 'Quoteable Rate' feature shows only base rate for 2 guests.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Your beautiful home offered us a view of the "real" Hawaii. The setting was just perfect with the plush grounds, comfortable furnishings and incredible view. What a wonderful place to meet our 3 sons- one from Alaska, one from the Marshall Islands.

It was fabulous!

We had a lovely visit, the house was a comfortable base of operations for our explorations of the east side of the island. It was cooler than being in the city or on the Kona side by far. Akaka falls is a wonderful nearby treat.

We Love, love, love the Pepeekeo house

  • 5 of 5
How do you describe Paradise on Earth?

We were a party of six adults who thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this house, which felt like “home”, for two weeks. Everything we needed was already there; all we had to do was go grocery shopping.

The atmosphere was perfect, from the breathtaking sunrises visible from all rooms of the house, to relaxing by the pool in the beautiful landscaped backyard or reading a book on the screened in lanai that overlooks the sea in the afternoons, to falling asleep to the music of the coqui frogs and the rain at night. (There has been a sofa added to the living room, which made it nice for everyone to gather in the evenings.)

The Location is perfect to visit Akaka Falls, Mauna Kea, the Volcanoes or all the little beaches we found while exploring the coastline.

We fell in love with the people on the Hilo side of the Island, they were warm and welcoming, much more so than on the Kona side of the Island.

Don't miss: Kens Pancake House in Hilo (Sumo!) Richardson's black sand beach on Kamehameha St. Each time we went there, we would find several large sea turtles resting in the crystal clear pools. The Farmer's Market in Hilo on Wednesday and Saturday has great local fruits, vegetables and souvenirs which help to support the local people and the community. If mosquito’s love you, like they love me, there is a lady selling “Lavender insect repellent” by Pelindaba, under the tents. It works and smells nice! You can get very inexpensive snorkel gear and water shoes at Wal-Mart. You will want at least the shoes or you will cut your feet up on the volcanic rocks. (We left ours for the next guests)

Last, but most definitely not least, is the property manager Randall. Randall was very warm and attentive without being intrusive. He had the house in perfect welcoming condition and offered suggestions for things to do on the rainy days.

I have already recommended this home away from home to our family and friends We've only been gone four days, and I am already “Home sick”. We will most definitely be back.

Wonderful stay in Pepeekeo house

  • of 5
Loved this house. Very comfortable, spacious home. I have stayed in many vacation rentals in Hawaii and this is one of the best. Very clean and very well supplied with everything you will need. Private, with beautiful grounds and a screened lanai looking out towards the sea. Be sure and open the soji screens between the dining room and lanai for the beautiful view and the indoor outdoor experience. Randall, the manager, was great and responded quickly to any questions we had. I highly recommend this house.

great place !!!!!!

  • 5 of 5
Great place to stay. The house was very clean. Magnificiant sunrise every morning. We have used the pool every day. The pool chairs could be changed. The lime tree was great. Open the Windows and you will have a nice breeze. Not like others, we have enjoyed the frog "music" in the evening. The only downside was the dogs BARKING. If you could do something about this, I would give you 6 stars!!! Randall is a great guy. He came to meet us when we arrived. This is realy a place to stay. What you get is better than what you see on the web site. Thank you and we recommend this place.

Beautiful private home

  • 5 of 5
Everything was exactly as pictured and expected, including the charming and authentic ofuro bath. The kitchen is nicely appointed. There are few "left-over" spices and such from previous guests, which is slightly unusual, so be sure to stock up on your fave items on the way in. I suggest going to the mega KTA store, which is pretty much across from the airport.

The house is located about 15 minutes from Hilo town, in a nice residential neighborhood standing on a hill, far enough from neighbors to feel secluded and with an exceptional view. We didn't lack for anything, and the sounds of the many birds, the evening's coqui symphony, and the many geckos kept us thoroughly entertained. Cable channels are sparse, but there is a stack of movies and DVD player.

Upstairs bedrooms (Queen beds) are comfy and airy with ceiling fans to cut the heat, the downstairs bedroom has two twins for the kids. Not sure what I'd do if I had small children, as sleeping them downstairs wouldn't be prudent, but it's a nice private hideaway for older kids.

Furnishings were comfortable and plentiful. We do wish there had been an actual sofa to lounge on, which would have made visiting with guests more comfortable, but overall we were just fine.

The pool is simply wonderful! Not overly chlorinated, the water is the perfect temperature to swim day or night (though it can feel a tad chilly in the evening and when it rains). Just big enough to swim "sprints", I was able to do my usual lap swimming, so so so happy!

Overall this home is such a relaxing, beautiful, comfortable place to be we actually spent a lot of time hanging out instead of doing the mad dashes to everywhere else.

Things not to miss: Poi balls on Saturdays on the road in from Hilo. 4-mile beach and Richardson's beach on Kamehameha St. where I had an intimate meeting with an enormous honu (sea turtle). The Saturday and Wednesday mega Farmer's Market in Hilo. Buy some of Wes's Menehune Jams -- they are amazing!!! The drive through Puna -- go down to the volcanic tide pools (bring your water slippahs or you will cut your feet up and don't forget snorkel gear!)

Of the many visits to the islands, this may be the best. I haven't even left the island yet, and I'm already planning my next trip -- and I will be staying here!

This well-furnished and equipped family home was perfect for our family's gathering for a Hilo wedding. The young children especially enjoyed the pool. Randall is a very efficient property manager.
