Bassi and Vigdis
We are a family of five, Bassi is studying to be a carpenter and Vigdis is an actress at The National Icelandic Theatre. We have two girls, 8 and 1 and one boy who lives with his mother in another town in Iceland, but visits us on a regular basis
We bought our house in February 2011. It was derelict and was in very bad condition. We began renovating it immediately and are still going at it . We are doing it ourselves slowly but surely, it´s a way of life. We love the neighbourhood, Vigdis was brought up a few houses away and we have lived in the quarter for 14 years. We saw potential in the garden which is unusually large for this area. The house is a big part of our lives, we live on the upper floor and let out the lower floor. The apartments have large windows and high ceilings which give a sense of space that we like. The house has a warm feel to it, a calmness, particularly on the lower floor which is wonderful, especially since it´s in the middle of the centre. It´s a 10 minute walking distance from the bus terminal (where the Flybus from the airport stops) and a 3 minute walking distance from the nearest bus stop.
We love old original things and like to have our surroundings beautiful. The art on the walls are from our private collection, things we´ve collected through the years on our travels around Europe. We have taken great care in keeping the apartment original to the period when the house was built (1903) which gives the apartment distinction. The ceilings are high and the windows large so the flat is bright and has a sense of space.
