Six Unhappy Ladies
Review Submitted: October 15, 2009
Date of Stay: August 2009
Six of us rented this house the last week of Aug, and found it mediocre and the owner quite difficult. We arrived early at 1:30PM and called the owner to ask if we could drop off our cars. The owners’ response was a resounding “No, check-in is at 3:00PM.” One of the six of us went to the house at 3:00PM to retrieve the keys since we were eating lunch. The lease holder was called by the owner and told she would only give the keys to her. The lease holder was called another two times in a ½ hour to pick up the keys.
We had three bikes, each with an approx value of $700, and were told to leave them outside. When we put our bikes in the cottage next to the pool which has tile floors and a lock, we were firmly admonished and told they should not be in there or in the garage which was full. The lease doesn’t stipulate this.
The refrigerator was broken. Food and beverages we brought with us remained warm and some spoiled because the refrigerator temperature was a sweltering 68° and remained there for 1 ½ days when a repair person was sent.
All towels and sheets smelled of mildew and had to be rewashed. So we spent our 1st day relocating food from the non-working refrigerator to the tepid freezer, moving bikes to the most obscure corner of the property to reduce their allure to would be bike thieves, and doing laundry.
The pool was green and unhygienic, we requested chlorine be added. The pool wasn’t cleaned for 2 days. A gardener mowed the lawn while a few of us tried to enjoy some quiet time by the pool. We asked him to stop for two reasons: it was extremely loud, and I’m allergic to fresh cut grass. At no point did the owner try to communicate to us the grass cutting schedule.
The owner also requests all sheets and towels laundered before leaving the premises. So leave some extra time on you check-out day for wash! The owner again was not accommodating; we requested check-out at 7AM. We were informed by the owner “that’s way too early for me” so we had no final walk-through. In my rental experience, not a big deal, however, it is a necessity with this owner else you run the risk of incurring ridiculous and unsubstantiated charges.
Overall, our vacation was awesome due to our ability to have fun despite the circumstances. However, our housing was less than desirable due to the uncooperative attitude of the owner, the wildly unrealistic requests, the lack of communication, and the substandard service. I would certainly spend your money elsewhere.
Owner's Response: We take great pride in our Cape Cod home which we offer for rent in the summer. Our lease is written looking toward covering as many issues as possible to prevent misunderstandings between leaser and leasee. However, there may be some circumstances that are unanticipated. Expectations are concretely stated in regard to the tenant's responsibilities before vacating the premises. It is important to us that our incoming guests are greeted with the same immaculate surroundings as were our outgoing guests. Since turnover time is limited, and our standards for cleanliness is high, we ask our departing guests to leave the premises in the same general condition as when they arrived.
We provide our tenants with a phone number to reach us as necessary and encourage them to call with any problem, big or small. We prefer to be made aware of any situation that may arise immediately. Our guest's comfort and pleasure is important to us as is the protection of our lovely home. We promptly address all concerns in a timely fashion
