Yes, we were presumptuous enough to arrive on Christmas day; so what does Kathy have waiting for us? Marcos, our own personal chef, with the biggest and best shrimp scampi a family could possibly desire! We traveled 2500 miles to find a warm spot on the beach for our 19 family members to celebrate Mom and Dad's 50th anniversary. We all very comfortably fit in the units of Madre Del Mar. Kathy arranged for Felipe to meet us on Sunday to discuss the week ahead. Felipe is a boat captain, and we had plans to visit Bird Island one day and to fish another day. Bird Island was a wonderful experience! On the way, we spotted a pod of dolphins. We slowed the boat as they swam right off our bow. The photos we got are amazing! Then we spotted 2 whales, just moments later. Felipe again took the time to maneuver us close for excellent viewing. Then, at Bird Island, we snorkled with some of the nearly 4000 sea lions that make their home there. The pups were 2-3 months old and it was amazing, swimming and interacting with sea lions just inches away. We enjoyed a few restaurants in town; all were both affordable and very accommodating of our large party. A few to recommend-Hacienda on Fremont Ave., real good Mexican food; Latitude 31, nice burgers in the bar; Pollo Lucas, fun outdoor seating and great chicken; Al Capone's Pizza, good pizza, great staff! Our fishing trip yielded a huge catch-11 fishermen caught some 400+ fish; rock bass, trigger fish and a lone flounder of 4-5 lbs. We arranged for Felipe to pass our catch on to Marcos, who served us 3 different fantastic fish entrees, right at Madre Del Mar! (I'm not a big fish fan, but loved the meal!) And make sure flan is your dessert choice! For our breakfasts and lunch, we found 2 supermarkets in town(Super Ley and SantaFe) that had most anything we needed. Also, try out 'Reggie's 8/12', right off Fremont, behind the Pemex station, has great doughnuts, breakfast burritos and coffee! I pasted 2 links to maps below: it will come in handy, if you'll print out a map before you arrive. We never were lost, but it a took a day or so to find our way around. Felipe was a treasure, helping us locate places in town, and even a Phoenix shuttle, as we sent our 23 yr. old son home early, saving us an 8 hr. trip
