Peaceful retreat near Koloa and Poipu

My husband and I had an incredibly relaxing 10-day stay at Tony and Willi's wonderful cottage near Koloa. The cottage was exactly as advertised - clean, airy and light, with very comfortably furnished bedrooms and baths. It was an expansive space for two people, and would also be fine for two couples who knew each other well, since the shared spaces (kitchen and dining area, living room, and large, covered lanai) are generous. We cooked most of our meals at "home" and were thrilled with how convenient this was. The grocery shops in Koloa are only a couple of minutes down the road, there is a wonderful fish shop that sells fresh fish there, and there is also a farmer's market once a week nearby for local produce. The cottage is on a rural road, and while the owner's house is next door and there are other residences nearby, the views are mostly wide-open countryside, with horses and a gorgeous mountain-scape in the background. The house is comfortable enough that it is tempting to stay put - the deck is a great place to sip a gin and tonic, commune with the geckos, and watch the weather and views go by. In fact, one of the big pluses of the house is that it is great in rain or sun, though we were lucky enough to have mainly the latter. It is very quiet except for (we thought) soothing sounds such as crickets and the occasional rooster.
The house is very close to Poipu and nearby sights - Poipu beaches with good snorkeling areas, spouting horn, and the national gardens are minutes away. The house was also very convenient to the Lihue airport, and reasonably close to the Waimea Canyon area and quiet western beaches (some of our favorite places). Though we explored the North Shore as well, we found it to be more driving than we liked for most days.
Willi and Tony were very friendly without being obtrusive. The house was easy to find, though like most places you will need a rental car to get around. There is a large, covered carport with beach gear you can borrow - we found the beach chairs and cooler very handy. This place quickly felt like home and we hated to leave. We'd be quick to stay here again on a return trip - it's an ideal location and fantastic value - perfect for people who like to come back to their own private retreat at the end of the day, and find a respite from the crowds.
