Photos and Description of the Manuel Antonio vacation house rental 2 BR, 1 BA, Sleeps 4

Casa Mirador sits on a cliff overlooking Punta Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park. It is a 10-minute walk to both Playa Espadilla and Playa Biesanz. Playa Espadilla is great for surfing and body boarding while Playa Biesanz is more protected and better for snorkeling and swimming. The house was designed by an award-winning architect to bring the area's natural beauty right into the house. There are breathtaking views from every window and terrace. Even the bathroom has a spectacular view. A tropical forest surrounds the back of the house providing privacy and a front row seat to Costa Rica's exotic plants and wildlife. The house has two bedrooms on the second floor and can easily sleep four people. There is a queen sized bed in one room and two twin beds in the other. There are several private terraces, including one in the master bedroom. The architect designed the house in a European style. It is simple and elegant in its construction and furnishings.

Location: Costa Rica < Central America

Manuel Antonio National Park is one of Costa Rica 's best known and most often visited parks. The area is home to over 353 species of birds. Howler and white-faced monkeys, two-toed and three-toed sloths, coati-mundi and raccoons frequent the beaches in and outside the Park. The National Park area offers some of the best beaches on Costa Rica's Pacific coast for surfing, swimming and snorkeling. Within the area, there is much to enjoy; bird watching, hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, and boat trips for fishing or to watch dolphins. Located besides the town of Quepos in the Central Pacific Zone, the area is one of the most beautiful in Costa Rica.

Further details for this vacation house rental in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

The house is mostly suitable for those who do not require lavish amenities, as there is no TV, stereo or air-conditioning. You will find however, that air conditioning is not necessary as the house sits on the top of a ridge and enjoys a constant fresh ocean breeze. Numerous windows and ceiling fans also provide for excellent ventilation. Casa Mirador is a place to relax and appreciate Costa Rica's natural beauty. In the morning, you will awaken to the exotic songs of rainforest birds and the sounds of the rolling waves of the sea below. Occasionally, you will hear howler monkeys in the distance (sometimes not so distant) giving their morning salutations. Often there are toucans in the palm trees around the house. If you're lucky, you might even see white-faced monkeys, squirrel monkeys or sloths dangling and jumping from the trees around the house. There are identification cards in the house as well so you will know what type of animal you are viewing.

You can have your morning coffee on the terrace and enjoy the fresh breeze as you take in the spectacular view of Manuel Antonio and Playa Espadilla. It is a short 10-minute walk downhill to Espadilla Beach below the houses and an additional 15 minute walk along the beach to the entrance of Manuel Antonio National Park. The kitchen is fully equipped with a microwave oven, toaster oven, refrigerator, coffee-maker, and all plates, pots, pans, utensils, etc. The house has a telephone in the living room area with an upstairs bedroom extension. There is one full bathroom and also an outside shower. There is hot water throughout the house, including the outside shower. Sheets and towels will be changed once each full week of your stay. This can be done more often upon request. There are plenty of towels for showering and larger beach towels for outside use.

Restrictions Please note that the house sits on a ridge and is only accessible by a series of approximately 110 steps leading from the parking area up to the house. This can make it a moderate physical endeavor. As such, it is not really suitable for very young children or people who are physically restricted. The walk up the stairs, however, is rewarding as it provides you with the fantastic view on top. There is an electric elevator basket that runs up the side of the hill the to the houses, but it was constructed to carry luggage and supplies only. The caretaker will take charge of getting all of your luggage to the house. You need only take your body up the stairs. The steepness of the terrain, the stairs (outside and inside the house), and the high balconies and terraces may make the house unsafe for children under a certain age. Please refrain from smoking inside the house.

Other Activities: Wildlife viewing, shopping, boating, parasailing, shelling

What a wonderful, wonderful vacation! This house was FANTASTIC - and exactly as (well, better than) described. We saw white face capuchin monkeys from the house the first morning, toucans daily, blue crown mot mots, kissidees, turkey vultures, and hawks on a regular basis (just to name a small few). The view of the ocean was breathtaking, and the people were very congenial. Bismark and Gloria (the caretakers) are terrific people, very helpful and warm. The guidebook was extremely helpful, and at one of the restaurants we saw squirrel monkeys every night (both the squirrel monkeys and capuchins had babies with them). We heard howlers every morning and evening, saw geckos and lizards galore, could you ask for better?? Also, the owners are VERY responsive to gazillions of questions. We would return without hesitation, and hope to, soon!

More like a camping bungalow...

Review Submitted: August 12, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
I agree with everything in the 5-star reviews but I can't rate it so high. The place is too rustic for the price, esp. compared to the Arenal property (#163797) where we stayed our 1st week. Overall rating: 3 with caveats.

House: 3 (but only due to the views/wildlife).

I don't know about "lavish" but a TV w/DVDs, or a boom box, would be nice. We knew this lack going in & it might not have matter at the start of a trip, but Quepos doesn't offer much for kids in the evening. Even some board games might help.

The place is cabin construction & needs more screens & fans. The mosquitoes got in unless we shut the doors and those windows w/o screens, cutting the breezes a lot. We ended the week as masses of itches. The ceiling fans on the 2nd floor offset the heat at night, but that on the 1st floor was too high and slow, resulting in muggy evenings with little to distract us from the bugs after dark.

A washer/dryer would be nice after sweaty/sandy days, but impractical given the property. Some brooms certainly *would* be practical.

Kitchen: 1 - Caveat: If I'm staying for a week, I want a decent kitchen; if that's not you, skip this.

I missed having an oven & there *was* room for one. The small fridge is old w/ a freezer that ices up and won't close. It wasn't turned on till we arrived - tough on the frozen goods we got on the way in. The fridge door is warped & you have be careful when you shut it. All 4 electric burners are w/in 1" of each other, so using more than 2 was almost impossible and even 2 produced a concentrated heat it was like using one mega-burner on high. No wonder the pans were warped! Sacrificing a little of the limited counter for a stove with more room for the burners would help. But then the table would be the only prep area. If your cooking plans are limited to sandwiches and soup, the kitchen won't bother you; if you plan on getting creative, this isn't the place.

Location: 4 - Both beaches are great & close. The hike back isn't bad and is the cost of those fabulous views. Lots of restaurants to offset the kitchen (plan on U.S. prices). This gets a 4 as the day trips are a ways off and pricier than similar inland.

Welcome: 3.5 - I kind of felt I was communicating with a corporation. Bismark saved this onsite.

In sum: Views & wildlife amazing (but this *is* Costa Rica). Facilities rustic for the price. If you're going to stay here do it when you're fresh and more wowed by the natural wonders of C.R.
Owner's Response: We regret that our little house did not live up to this guest's expectations. He is correct that the house is simple. We try to make that abundantly clear to our guests from the very beginning. This house is more for people who don't need (or want) hotel-like amenities and want to get off the grid a little while in Costa Rica. We have generally found that our guests who are most pleased with the rental are those that don't want to watch T.V. on their free time and are more interested in reading, drawing, birdwatching, photography, painting, lizard counting or daydreaming.

We strive to be as accommodating as possible with all of our guests. We are surprised that this guest felt like he was communIcating with a "corporation". That couldn't be farther from the truth. The two houses are owned by our family through an LLC. We travel to both houses several times a year and cherish them as our family get-away.

Regarding the rental price, you will not find another place with this view for the same price. We are intentionally priced below other rentals in the area with similar views because we understand the house is simple. Many visitors expect Costa Rica to be cheap as countries in Central America were 15 - 20 years ago. Heavy tourism has changed that. Manuel Antonio is one the more popular areas of Costa Rica which is reflected in the prices. We feel these houses are a bargain for the area.

On a final note, this is Costa Rica, and June - November is the wet season, so there are bugs. The house is open-air with screens, but sometimes mosquitos and the millions of other insects of the jungle find their way into the house. If critters creep you out, then perhaps an air-conditioned hotel room is better. But if you are fascinated by insects and lizards and bats and birds and frogs and monkeys, and if you are inspired by sweeping ocean views and sunsets, then we would love to have you as a guest in our house.

This view home is ideally located within walking distance of two beaches -- one rip-roaring with surfing and water-sports activities and the other as tranquil as a bathtub. Wildlife -- monkeys, aracaris, sloths, etc. -- are right outside your windows, so get up early, drink your coffee on the deck and watch the spectacle! Our family will never forget this remarkable trip -- the caretaker Bismark, his adorable dogs, the zipline canopy tour, fabulous restaurants, jet skiing, boogie boarding, crocodiles, iguanas, and so much more! We regret that we only had 8 days to spend in beautiful Manuel Antonio. We look forward to one day returning to Costa Rica and this amazing jungle home.

What a perfect little house! We couldn't have been
more pleased. Everything about it was so well
thought out: the flow of air, the light, stunning
views from every room, outdoor balconies for sun
or shade any time of day. Whoever designed this
house nailed it! The caretakers were welcoming,
helpful, and we loved the friendly little dogs,
especially the fetching Blanquita. We can't wait to
return.

We stayed at Casa Miridar for our anniversary April 26th-May 1st, and we LOVED it! There was a bottle of wine waiting on us when we got there. The care takers were wonderful people and their daughter Gloria spoke wonderful english and was such a delight! We definitely got in shape on our short trip with all the stairs, but it gave us more incentive to eat what we wanted while we were there ;) Plus the views were just incredible! Thanks so much for sharing your home with us :)
