~ About the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park ~
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, established in 1916, displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution -- processes that thrust a bare land from the sea and clothed it with complex and unique ecosystems and a distinct human culture. The park encompasses diverse environments that range from sea level to the summit of the earth's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet. Kilauea, the world's most active volcano, now taking a pause, offers scientists insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and visitors' views of dramatic volcanic landscapes.

Over half of the park is designated wilderness and provides unusual hiking and camping opportunities. In recognition of its outstanding natural values, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has been honored as an International Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site.

The National Park Web site provides up-to-date information, tours, and hiking trails.

Great location, beautiful setting, wood smoke a problem
We would have given this place a higher rating but for an issue with wood smoke. First, the good. The home is a wonderful setting, surrounded by tropical forest, quiet, peaceful, minutes drive from town of Volcano and the park. It is spacious inside, great lanai for hanging outdoors, fully equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, good showers, and great to see use of solar power. Nice touches like fresh fruit and flowers. Now, the less good. When we arrived, the place smelled heavily of wood smoke, likely from prior guest use of fire place. This poor indoor air quality made my wife's asthma flare. We opened all doors/windows and ran fans to ventilate and while this reduced smoke smell some, it did not resolve the issue. The manager did not offer a solution but did offer us a refund if we wanted to leave (did not, as nearby accommodations not available). Maybe providing a HEPA air filter unit (e.g. BlueAir) would help. Because of this wood smoke issue, we cannot recommend place to anyone with asthma or other sensitivities to poor indoor air quality. Otherwise, it is a great place.

The most comfortable rental I have experienced.
Peggy has gone above and beyond to make things comfortable and easy at her home. From her consistent communication before and during our stay, to the amount of kitchen products (oil, sugar, salt pepper, spices) to the amount of towels, she literally has thought of everything. For the first time ever staying in a rental, we didn’t need all of the items we brought for our stay, we just needed groceries. Her rental feels like home and we couldn’t have been more happy or comfortable. Our kids say they miss the house like it’s a family member. We all really connected with the home and the beauty of the entire property it was so peaceful and quiet, with the only sounds outside coming from the birds and pleasant sound of occasional rain. If you stay, please say hi to the North Cardinal we named “Big Red” that visited the bird feeder all through out the day.

Beautiful Home
My family loved this home in the rainforest! It was great for easy access to Volcano Village and the national park. The house is beautiful and very comfortable for our family of 4. The hammock was a fun addition and we appreciated the drinks and fruit provided. I highly recommend this property.

Wonderful Home
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house is beautifully decorated and Peggy has gone to great lengths to make it comfortable for guests. (The flowers were magnificent.) We were there for just two nights and, unfortunately, had a lot of rain over that period, so we did not have the opportunity to enjoy the deck, which clearly would have been a lovely place to spend some time. Communication was immediate. We all would highly recommend Peggy's place.

Unique and Beautiful!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Pele’s Secret Garden! What a unique and beautiful property! It is nestled in the rainforest with tropical plants and birds everywhere. The furnishings were beautiful, especially the tiled fireplace. We loved that the owner provided fresh tropical fruits and fresh flowers in vases. Kitchen was very well equipped. Beds were extremely comfortable. The two full bathrooms were great for two couples, and the showers were fantastic. We also appreciated that the owner was environmentally conscious. Very close to Volcanoes National Park. Definitely exceeded our expectations! Highly recommend!
