A little history = Rancho Mirage is a 21st century small city (pop. 17,000). The Palm Springs Valley was home to the Agua Caliente band of Cahuilla Indians for centuries before the Spanish developed land routes to supply inland missions in the 1770's. In 1774, Spanish Captain Juan Bautista de Anza (with 34 men) crossed our desert to open a route to the coast. in 1834, California became a US territory after the Mexican-American war. The following year brought the California Gold Rush of 1849 (San Francisco 49'ers!) and led to statehood in 1950. Colonel Henry Washington and his troops made the first US survey of the Palm Springs valley in 1855.
