And so do the monkeys that scramble through the trees outside our distinctive ecologically designed home. Our new private pool, illustrated below, is now completed. It is not a dip pool but a true swimming pool. Also newly added: Free wi-fi high-speed Internet. A brief description: High on a plateau, the villa, beautifully furnished with wide viewing terraces, rises 3 floors above 5 acres of pristine jungle and a beautifully landscaped orchard with bananas, pineapples, orange, grapefruit and many other fruit species. Distant views of the Pacific and looming mountains. Well off the main roads, halfway between the tourist town of Quepos and the island-studded beaches off Manuel Antonio National Park.

Nearby beaches are within and outside one of Costa Rica's most beautiful parks. Villa Tekla is midway (3 km) between Quepos, a tourist town, and the park entrance. Views from the patio and upper floor take in jungle, green-clad hills, and the sweep of the Pacific. Much of our 5 acres has been planted with rare, flowering hardwoods, and provides a reserve for birds, playful capuchin and squirrel monkeys that comb the canopy for fruit, nuts and insects. Plus coatis, sloths, tree iguanas, anteaters, squirrels, colorful frogs and geckos, and other fauna that visit from the National Park.

  • The main bathrooms have all towels and accessories and mirrors. Very large tub-shower in the main floor bathroom. Bathroom 3 is essentially an outdoor shower which we ask guests to use to wash off sand from the beaches before entering the house.

Bedroom 3 is on the 3rd level with expansive views and two single beds, perfect for kids, that can be joined as one king A sofa in the living room offers additional sleeping accommodation.

Notes: Broadband wi-fi is free for those bringing laptops or notebooks. The pool area is right next to the house and its patio areas are extensively tiled. The pool has a deep end, at six feet, and is intended not just for play but exercise. Young children must not swim unattended. The main floor is open-air and open-space, but well-protected by decorative Spanish grillwork. Lonas (rain blinds) may be lowered in the event of heavy tropical rain. The downstairs floor is entirely screened in, and comes with a separate entrance and an en suite.. The maid and gardener come twice a week, at our cost, as well as the pool overseer. The gardener will from time to time offer ripe bananas, pineapples, papayas and other seasonal fruit from our orchards. Tools and other gardening supplies are kept in a locked bodega, near the gate. That gate should be locked each evening for your comfort and security. Within the house, three secure lockups are available for valuables.

We have lived part time in Costa Rica since 1980, and can help renters with most if not all of their travel plans and we have a wide knowledge of the country's tourist areas, parks, and particularly local attractions, as well as the social and political issues of Costa Rica. Renters should not hesitate to ask questions. For those interested in flora and fauna: coatis, sloths, tree iguanas, anteaters, squirrels, colorful frogs and geckos, and other fauna visit from the National Park. At night the lawn below the house twinkles with fireflies. Wake up to the reverberant trumpeting of howler monkeys, to a serenade of tanagers, thrushes and flycatchers, and colorful songsters galore. And enjoy our new pool

A writer's home: This property is the home of Tekla Deverell, psychologist, and William Deverell, novelist. We offer a 15% discount to writers and artists as well.

Extras: Villa Tekla pays for all gardening and maid services (Francisco and Lorena, honest, valued employees who come two mornings each week), and all utilities including cable.

Addition of a pool an excellent idea!

I've rated my overall experience as "good" based on our Feb.2008 vacation at Villa Tekla.With the addition of a pool, it would be "excellent".The weather is hot & a cool dip would have been a real luxury.
The house is spacious & nicely decorated.The ceiling fans & open-air concept keep it at a pleasant temperature day & night.
The bathroom was bright & colourful. The bedroom we used was on the same floor as the large livingroom .The bed was really comfortable.
The only complaint I can find is that the kitchen could have been a little better equipped & the fridge had seen better days, but to me these are minor details that are quickly & easily rectified.There are other more important considerations.
For example,the house is very secure, with 2 locking closets to store valuables such as passports, cameras,cash,etc. No worries on that count.In spite of the open window concept, the house can be securely locked , allowing no outside access.( There ARE blinds on the outside should you wish to close them.We didn't see the need.)
We'd heard tales of stealing in Costa Rica but anyone using common sense & looking after their belongings carefully (as you do at home!) should have nothing to fear.
Lorena came to clean twice a week was very nice & did a great job. Francisco the gardener is charming.I was able to practise my Spanish on them: they were very patient!
We saw insects, birds, monkeys,etc,lots of interesting butterflies, plants, geckos, iguanas.
We found the local bus & the reasonably-priced taxis more than adequate to get around locally.It was nice to chat with the local people, who are very gracious .We stayed for 3 weeks & only rented a car for 3 days in order to go a liitle further afield.
There's a grocery store not too far away, & a well-stocked corner store( a pulperia) just a few steps away.
The beach can be reached by bus or taxi.There are some nice restaurants close by, as well as a little further afield.We found all restaurants to be clean & especially liked Tico meals, "casados",to be precise:rice, fried plantains,beans,salad,vegetables & fish or chicken.The little restaurant next to Super Joseth grocery was really good.
I would recommend the Lynch Travel Agency in Quepos for help in arranging tours,etc.
I recommend Villa Tekla for a great vacation; and now, with the addition of a pool, it should be fantastic.
