Forbes Magazine has just named Manuel Antonio as one of the WORLD'S best National Parks! Read on:
'A stunning combination of beaches and coral reefs, perfect for snorkeling and exploring the area’s famous tangle of mangroves. Rainforest jungles remain untouched habitats for Three-toed Sloths, iguanas, Central American squirrel monkeys and birds of extraordinary colors. One of Costa Rica’s smallest national parks, Manuel Antonio is nevertheless one of its most popular, with activities ranging from white-water rafting and sea kayaking to horseback riding on one of the park’s four beaches'
All this awaits you at Villa Tekla. And so do the monkeys that scramble through the trees outside our distinctive ecologically designed home. Twenty-metre lap pool, totally private. Free wi-fi high-speed Internet, and maid and gardening and pool services. For complete details about Villa Tekla, with photos, maps, rates, check out www.villatekla.com
Support a healthy, green environment: We are contributors to several environmental organizations and particularly invite naturalists, birders, and those concerned with keeping our planet green and healthy, and support the Costa Rican government's initiatives to this end. So we offer a 15% discount to other such supporters. We have lived part time in Costa Rica since 1980, and can help renters with most if not all of their travel plans and we have a wide knowledge of the country's tourist areas, parks, and particularly local attractions. Renters should not hesitate to ask questions. For those interested in flora and fauna: coatis, sloths, tree iguanas, anteaters, squirrels, colorful frogs and geckos, and other fauna visit from the National Park. At night the lawn below the house twinkles with fireflies. Wake up to the reverberant trumpeting of howler monkeys, to a serenade of tanagers, thrushes and flycatchers, and colorful songsters galore. All while you enjoy our new 20-metre lap pool.
A writer's home: This property has been the seasonal home of Tekla Deverell, psychologist, and William Deverell, novelist since the early 1980s, so we are among the original extranjeros in the Quepos-Manuel Antonio area, and our villa has been home to many artists and writers (to whom we offer a 15% discount as well) and many others who are just seeking to escape for a holiday to this amazing paradise. If you wish to know more about us, Google William Deverell, author of 16 novels and one non-fiction work. See www.deverell.com.
Extras: Villa Tekla pays for all gardening and maid services by our trustworthy and valued employees who attend to the house and property twice weekly, and all utilities including cable.
Owned by trial lawyer and novelist, author of 18 mysteries, thrillers and courtroom dramas, plus TV series and films. More at http://deverell.com
Rebecca Wells purchased this villa in 1983
Deverell wrote a travel article about the area in the early 1980s, having fallen in love with a special piece of paradise, and soon thereafter bought four acres of it.
The myriad birds, the three species of monkeys, the utter privacy by the swimming pool, the unique eco-friendly architecture of a home built by ourselves.
Villa Tekla was amazing!!! It was a beautiful open air house right in the middle of nature. We got to see white face monkeys and a sloth right in the back yard! Not to mention the iguana who lives under the pool (which is fantastically warm). The house is centrally located in Manuel Antonio, not even 10 minutes from the public beach and park! Also Playa Beisanz is a must see! Rebecca was fantastic! She gave us a few ideas of where to eat and what tours to take, I HIGHLY recommend the Chino Mangrove your and request Alex as your guide! You get to see white face monkeys up close as well as feed them! Alex is super informative and is a blast! Def would stay here again if I was to visit the area. Would not recommend for light sleepers. The mornings can be loud if you hate waking up to birds, howler monkeys, etc.
2009 was our first visit to Villa Tekla. Four weeks was not enough. The only thing missing from Bill and Tekla home was Bill and Tekla. We enjoyed our stay so much that we came home and booked our 2010 stay. Can't wait to return. And to Bill and Tekla, we always have a spare room or two if you get home sick.

We so much enjoyed staying in your wonderful house .What a lovely place !
We loved the neighbourhood , the pulperia, chatting with the people, helping poor old "Pinto".
My dormant Spanish suddenly became alive again.
Lorena , & Francisco were so kind to us.
Kennia 's a real sweetie. I've promised to write to her.
Thank you for sharing your lovely place with us.
It was all I'd expected, and more.
Thanks to you both for a great, great time.
My wife and I stayed at Villa Tekla November 2008.
We really enjoyed the privacy and the open air
architecture. There were no problem with insects
and if you clean up dishes promptly after meals no
ant issues either. My wife and I photographed and
saw 22 different bird species on the property as
well as hearing howlers and seeing a sloth in the
back yard. Toucans visited several times and that
was particularly exciting. We saw blue morphos
several times as well. The local market was close
and convenient and the owners property manager
(Rebecca) was extremely helpful and friendly. She
arranged two tours for us before we arrived (a
mangrove and manual antonio park tour). If we
return to this part of Costa Rica we would definitely
plan on staying here if it was available.
I've rated my overall experience as "good" based on our Feb.2008 vacation at Villa Tekla. With the addition of a pool, it would be "excellent".The weather is hot & a cool dip would have been a real luxury.
The house is spacious & nicely decorated. The ceiling fans & open-air concept keep it at a pleasant temperature day & night.
The bathroom was bright & colourful. The bedroom we used was on the same floor as the large livingroom .The bed was really comfortable.
The only complaint I can find is that the kitchen could have been a little better equipped & the fridge had seen better days, but to me these are minor details that are quickly & easily rectified. There are other more important considerations.
For example, the house is very secure, with 2 locking closets to store valuables such as passports, cameras, cash, etc. No worries on that count. In spite of the open window concept, the house can be securely locked , allowing no outside access.( There ARE blinds on the outside should you wish to close them.We didn't see the need.)
We'd heard tales of stealing in Costa Rica but anyone using common sense & looking after their belongings carefully (as you do at home!) should have nothing to fear.
Lorena came to clean twice a week was very nice & did a great job. Francisco the gardener is charming.I was able to practise my Spanish on them: they were very patient!
We saw insects, birds, monkeys, etc, lots of interesting butterflies, plants, geckos, iguanas.
We found the local bus & the reasonably-priced taxis more than adequate to get around locally. It was nice to chat with the local people, who are very gracious .We stayed for 3 weeks & only rented a car for 3 days in order to go a liitle further afield.
There's a grocery store not too far away, & a well-stocked corner store( a pulperia) just a few steps away.
The beach can be reached by bus or taxi. There are some nice restaurants close by, as well as a little further afield. We found all restaurants to be clean & especially liked Tico meals, "casados",to be precise:rice, fried plantains, beans, salad, vegetables & fish or chicken. The little restaurant next to Super Joseth grocery was really good.
I would recommend the Lynch Travel Agency in Quepos for help in arranging tours, etc.
I recommend Villa Tekla for a great vacation; and now, with the addition of a pool, it should be fantastic.
We very much enjoyed staying in this lovely house in Feb.2008.We loved the neighbourhood, the pulperia, chatting with the people, taking the local bus.In fact, the bus & taxis are an efficient & cheap way of getting around.
The addition of a pool this year is a fantastic idea.
Nearby beaches are within and outside one of Costa Rica's most beautiful parks. Villa Tekla is midway (3 km) between Quepos, a tourist town, and the park entrance. Views from the patio and upper floor take in jungle, green-clad hills, and the sweep of the Pacific. Much of our 5 acres has been planted with rare, flowering hardwoods, and provides a reserve for birds, playful howler, white-face and squirrel monkeys that comb the canopy for fruit, nuts and insects. Plus coatis, sloths, tree iguanas, anteaters, squirrels, colorful frogs and geckos, and other fauna that visit from the National Park.
Other Activities: birding, river rafting, canopy tours, secret beaches
Golf: The nearest course is at Los Suenos near Jaco, 38 kilometres northwest up the coast
