Beach-related activities are countless. South Padre Island’s latitude is comparable to that of Fort Lauderdale in Florida. Average water temperatures vary from 77 to 83 degrees from May through October. January, the “coldest” month of the year on the Island, has air temperatures that have an average low of 52 degrees and high of 68 degrees. The Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark is great for family entertainment. A vacation to South Padre Island is unique because you can experience the surf on the Gulf side with the calmer water of the Laguna Madre on the Bay side. Sunsets on the Bay (where many restaurants and bars are located) are spectacular. Every Friday night between Memorial Day and Labor Day there is an extensive fireworks show Not to be missed is the SPI Birding and Nature Center, the Sea Turtle rescue and rehabilitation center, and watching dolphins play off of the southern tip of Isla Blanca park. A trip to Matamoros, Mexico is only 30 miles away near Brownsville, TX.
