Our piece of paradise is Villas Sacbe Unit 10, a luxurious 3-story penthouse in a small group of 12 condominiums located in the heart of Playa del Carmen. On 1st Avenue between 12th Street and 14th Street, you are about 50 meters from the beach and 25 meters from the shops, restaurants and nightlife in the most vibrant portion of Fifth Avenue. Whether you prefer the fresh daily offerings at Media Luna, the Mayan and traditional Mexican dishes at Yaxche, or any other fantastic food, there are 50 restaurants within 4 blocks of your unit. There are 2 supermarkets in walking distance, too. There is no need for a car in Playa. The nearby beach is nearly perfect for children and adults alike--gradually sloping white sand with gentle waves in the turquoise water. Visit our piece of paradise. You may never go home.
Visions of Paradise: The unique architecture of Villas Sacbe Unit 10 features 2-story windows overlooking the central courtyard and swimming pool, curved walls and open spiral staircases, and a palapa roof over the third bedroom. Interior highlights include rose-colored Tikul stone on all floors and striking local paintings and sculptures. The spacious living room seats 8 in comfort, and sliding glass doors open to a pleasant balcony above 1st Avenue. But the best place in our unit is the large private rooftop terrace with its plunge tub, wet bar and small gas grill, and peaceful views of the Caribbean Sea and Cozumel. Beautiful beaches (all public) abound in Playa and all along the Mayan Riviera. But we always love returning to Villas Sacbe to cool off in the courtyard pool (or the air conditioning inside), and relax in the evening breeze on the terrace.
Tastes of Paradise: We gravitate to the stools around our custom kitchen island for food and drink, especially breakfast and lunch. And for happy hour with wine or margaritas, and fresh homemade guacamole and salsa with chips. Our kitchen is well equipped for preparing full dinners as well as lighter meals, with full-size stainless steel gas stove and oven. Chef service is available, too, but we take most meals at restaurants.
Resting in Paradise: There are two bedrooms are located on the lower floor of Unit 10. The master bedroom has a queen-sized bed and a private bathroom, and is equipped with cable TV and DVD player. The second bedroom has two twin-sized beds that can be made up as a king, and uses the hallway bathroom. Each lower lever bedroom has a ceiling fan and an ample closet with safe, and opens to a small terrace overlooking 1st Avenue. The third bedroom is a romantic loft above the private rooftop terrace that has a double bed, and small balcony with a fantastic view. The large sectional couch in the living room can be used to sleep two if desired. A free portable crib is available upon request. But my favorite sleeping spot is under the morning sun on the private rooftop terrace. When I get hot, I step into the plunge tub. Then back under the sun. I love paradise. I may never go home.
The location was close to all of the action and the condo was very nice, situated in a very nice condo complex--appointed very well with nice furniture and a fully equiped kitchen, very modern all around. About a 1 block walk to the beach, short walk to numerous restaurants, clubs, etc. No laundry in the unit. It was a bit noisy from street and club noise at night, esp on the wk-end.
The A/C malfunctioned for about 1/2 of our trip but was repaired after the wk-end and temps weren't too bad with the doors/windows open and the fans on. It has secure parking which is very nice if one rents a car like we did. Nice view of Cozumel at night from the rooftop deck, and great sea breezes from multiple decks.
All in all pretty much just as advertised, a lovely apt, lots of bathrooms, and the owner was responsive via email (didn't try calling him) and responsive to both answering questions and dealing with the couple of issues that came up. I don't know about sleeping 8 (unless one of the living room sofas opens up--didn't try); it was more space than we needed with 2 adults and 2 teens.
Would probably stay there again if visiting Playa, and would recommend to others.
Playa del Carmen is located on the Riviera Maya, 32 miles south of the Cancun airport and 44 south of Cancun proper. Two ecological water theme-parks are nearby. We favor Xel Ha (32 miles south of Playa), but Xcaret (6 miles south of Playa) runs a close second. The spectacular ruins at Tulum are 40 miles south of Playa. The well restored ruins at Chichen Itza, located about 150 miles from Playa, are best visited by bus tour. The island of Cozumel, clearly visible from Villas Sacbe Unit 10, is an easy day trip by ferry.
