An environmentalist at heart. This is a pristine environment which we envisioned and created from raw jungle. As a lover of wildlife and nature I fell in love with Belize. The low population density as well as the cultural diversity were also a big draw for me.
Ron Castagnera purchased this lodge in 1993

I'm glad I found and booked this loge after looking at numerous other resorts and lodges across Belize. I wanted to experience a holiday that I have never experienced before and I had it. The location is awesome, nestled in between the mountains and along side the river. During the mornings the breeze helped keep me cool, I went from -6 Celsius where I live to plus 30 in the jungle. At night the temperature was warm and very comforting along with the sounds of nature. During the mornings and late afternoon all sorts of birds were easily observed. The property had well marked trails which looped back to the main trail, allowing maximized habitat for animals and provided good shade. Ron and Al were very knowledgeable and informative about tours and surrounding activities, they helped me book a few tours. If it wasn't for them I would have missed out on a few of my most memorable highlights during my entire stay in Belize. After a tour I looked forward to returning to the lodge and tell them about my adventure. Most of my meals were breakfast and dinner at the lodge, the food was very authentic and well presented. Every day I had something different due to a good selection of dishes. I would put Macaw on anyone's list who is going to belize, it truly is a hidden gem. Thank-you Ron and Al for making my stay a rewarding and memorable one. I'm looking forward to seeing you guys in the near future.
The Macaw Bank Jungle lodge is a once in a lifetime experience. If you are seeking a 5 star fancy resort, this is not the place for you. But if you are after extremely comfortable accommodations in a beautiful setting with gracious hosts, you can do not better than Macaw Bank. The owners Ron and Al are exceptional people with a unique blend of appreciation for the spectacular Belizean Cayo environment, culinary skills and exceptional friendliness. Following our 6 day stay at MBJL we spent a week on Glover's Reef, which was fantastic, but was not as memorable as our stay at MBJL. From the time of our arrival with rental car problems, Ron and Al were the most helpful and friendly people. While they do not run tours directly from their lodge, they will set up everything for you with other operators. During our stay we visited Caracol, ATM and El Pillar. Must confess while the sites were superb each day we were looking forward to our return to MBJL. The grounds have been exceptionally cultivated and are a beautiful example of lodge type landscaping blending with the natural environment. Kudos to Al on this one. The meals are fantastic. Ron and Al will cater to their guests dietary preferences and personally prepare awesome meals. They are probably a little over priced, but the convenience of dining right at the lodge plus conversing with Ron and Al and the other guests makes it more than worth it. We met some great folks while staying there. This type of place attracts quality people. Not much else to say, we hope to return soon.
I cannot express enough in this review how much we thoroughly enjoyed the Macaw Bank Jungle Lodge! From the rooms, to the food, to the beauty of the property, to the attentive service, this lodge is 5 stars all the way, without the 5 star cost.
We were a group of 9. We visited the Cayo and Placencia and wished we had stayed at MBJL longer and spent less time in Placencia. That was how great this jungle lodge is! Anyone planning on visiting Belize and not planning to visit the Cayo district and the MBJL is making a mistake.
From the moment we arrived until the moment we left we were totally taken care of. The owners (Ron and Al) and their wonderful staff (Henry, Reuben and Eduardo) were so accomodating, gracious and welcoming!
The rooms are clean, comfortable and attractive. They consist of handmade furniture from local wood as well as local art. The showers are made of beautiful stone. One room can accomodate 2 people, but the other 4 rooms can accomodate 3-4 people each. The rooms have electricity, lights and a fully operating bathroom/shower.
The lodge is in the Cayo district where there is so much to do! ATM cave tour,Tikal in Guatemala, the ruins of Caracol and the ruins of Xunantunich. There is river tubing, birding and other activities too.
Now, about the food! After our first dinner, we decided to eat all of our meals (breakfasts and dinners) at the lodge. The food was that good! Nothing we tasted the entire time in Belize compared with the meals that Ron, Al and his staff prepared for us. We had children in our group as well as a vegetarian and they always found a way to make a meal that accomodated everyone and was delicious! My kids ate foods i've never seen them eat before! From soups to salads to entrees to dessert, all of the food was awesome! If the restaurant was on Yelp, it would have 5 stars. I cannot stress this enough, EAT ALL YOUR MEALS AT THE LODGE!
2 things to be aware of: 1.This is an ecolodge in the jungle, so don't expect tv, blow dryers or showers with great water pressure. 2. The lodge is remotely located down 8 miles of a mostly dirt/rock road.Get an SUV, 4 wheel drive preferably, and you will have no problem.
Whether you are renting 1 cabana or a group renting all 5 so you can have the entire resort to yourself, the MBJL is one of those places that makes a vacation truly special.Truly the way a vacation should be. We want to go back to Belize just so we can return to the lodge. Thank u Ron, Al, Henry, Reuben, Eduardo
This is the fourth time I've looked at my cell phone. No service! I am walking around the grounds into the jungle. I pause to watch the line of leaf cutter ants marching across the trail, each carrying their portion of leaf proudly back to their nest. A blue crowned Motmot wags its tail at me from the tree, accompanied by its croak. No wonder some locals call it a clockbird. The shadows are lengthening as the cool of the evening comes up from the river. It is noisy in the jungle at night. If it's dry, the insects chirp; if it's wet, the frogs croak. That's how I was lulled to sleep last night, after I went to my cabana with the trail sparkled with fireflies. I'll do the same tonight, after a great meal prepared by my hosts. I look at my cell phone again. No service! This is glorious! Solitude, privacy, a true respite from the world. Thank you, Ron and Al, for this peaceful place.
We stayed twice at this lovely resort. The grounds, as well as the resort itself, were absolutely gorgeous. We spent mornings walking barefoot along the lush grassy path, lined with Morning Glories, down to the river as the parrots and toucans passed by overhead. The afternoons were spent lazing on one of the hammocks on the property or bobbing down the river on a tube, as neon orange and green iguanas wearily watched us as they precariously balanced their large bodies on the tree branches above. Evenings were a gastronomic delight, as we were treated to everything from local Belizean fare, authentic Italian to Chesapeake Bay home cookin', courtesy of the owners, who cooked each meal from scratch. Al & Ron were wonderful, accomodating hosts who took the time to give us a tour of Belize, as well as the surrounding areas. We coudn't have asked for a better vacation!
We stayed at Macaw Bank and were completely impressed. Ron & Al were wonderful hosts and cooks. Not only did we enjoy the comfortable accomadations, but we enjoyed spending time with them. The grounds are stunning! It is quite impressive to know that they carved the lodge out of raw jungle and transformed it into what it is today. We look forward to returning.
