H for horizon
Two hours’ drive east with the skyscrapers of New York City behind you, find Slate Pond House, an archetypal escape on a sleepy lane in Bridgehampton. A heated outdoor swimming pool, top-of-the-range BBQ and Adirondack chairs make the private back garden a sun-trap shrine to relaxation and hanging out, and you’re just a walk from Bridgehampton’s main resort centre, Montauk Highway. Here you'll find renowned eateries, like Bobby Van's Steakhouse and Candy Kitchen, and stylish boutiques in Bridgehampton Commons. Set to exploring, then bunker down in your utterly comfortable retreat, or pack a picnic and head for the sands of Sagg Main Beach, two miles straight down Ocean Road – a relaxing 30-minute stroll, or an even shorter cycle.
Bridgehampton thrives all summer, when the urban elite swaps its suits and briefcases for sandals and beachwear. Between basking on Sagg Main Beach and returning to the backyard's pool you'll pass Ocean Road's attractions, such as Almond, a sophisticated restaurant and bar. And a 12-minute drive East is Main Street, where antiques shops, restaurants, museums and cafés are sure to beguile you into a slower pace of living.
The most flamboyant fly by helicopter from NYC to the Bridgehampton – a short, and expensive, 40-minute journey. Alternatively, the Hampton Jitney will take you from Midtown Manhattan to Bridgehampton in just over two hours, about the same time it takes if you rent a car and drive from the city or outlying airports.
In green surroundings, the pitched roof and wooden frontage of Slate Pond House are unmistakably of the Hamptons. Follow your energetic hosts’ footsteps and run or cycle to the ocean of cool mornings. Or if you prefer to dip your toes closer to home, the swimming pool is a private seaside. Inside, dark wooden floors are offset by rich neutral tones of cream, caramel and coffee, and all four bedrooms have distinct personalities, along with accessories of rope, wicker and bleached beams. But don't bunker down too soon: in the basement you’ll find a gorgeous den for relaxed movie nights, with leather lounge chairs and a spectacular 70-inch television.
