PERFECT FOR OUR FAMILY OF 4

  • 4 of 5
We rented the house for the month of February. The space was enough for our family (2 adults/2 kids). We were there weekends and one week, mostly to ski at Butternut. The house is conveniently located, although you need 4WD/AWD to negotiate the dirt roads with all the snow. The owners were wonderful to work with and attentive to any issues we experienced.
We enjoyed the home and it's cozy, quiet atmosphere. We walked to the lake in the mornings & took in the stars at night. The kids built a nice sled track in the yard. The kitchen is small but adequately appointed. I brought my own knives & pots, as I love to cook. I could see it being much more geared toward summer renters (outdoor grill, blender, etc). The washer/dryer are a stacked, apartment sized. The bedrooms are nice sized with a big, empty dresser in each, however the wall doesn't come up to the ceiling so sound carries between the bedrooms/LR/kitchen (we knew this before renting, however, it took some getting used to). We loved sitting in front of the propane stove/fireplace in the evening playing board games. The porch is nice, separated from the kitchen/LR by a door, which offers some privacy. The beds & futons were comfortable, everyone slept well.
Overall, it was a nice cottage to rent for the month. Thank you.

THE FROZEN CHALET...

  • 5 of 5
this review is long overdue - but checking in on our 'home away from home' realized we were amiss. First rented for MLK weekend in the 2011/2012 season when the temps were unseasonably nippy - and we arrived to a freezing house with frozen pipes. Unfortunately, the pilot light was out as well so we had to boil snow to keep ourselves just a tad warmer... here's where amazing ownership comes in. Within minutes, Barbara had someone plowing the driveway and checking on propane - and not too long after we had the house to its full potential. (do consider remote temp control! :) But we loved the house henceforth known as Frozen Chalet as much as to rent for 6 weeks for the 2012/13 season - it really is a lovely place. Fits 4 comfortably, beyond that is a bit of stretch given size of living area and a single bathroom and not much of a mudroom area. The lake that was frozen solid was a huge hit - we spent hours on it each day, even after a full day of skiing - bring your skates (though the alternating melting/freezing might have allowed for the extraordinarily smooth surface). Lovely community with lots of dogs to meet. Up to date kitchen, and love love love the sun room - great place to have your morning coffee or challenge your kids in Monopoly. If Butternut is your mountain this season, give them a shout!!

STAYED TWICE IN SIX MONTHS-AWESOME!

  • 5 of 5
This was my 2nd stay in six months. Our first stay was during Thanksgiving and our second stay was Easter weekend. Both stays were awesome. The cottage is truly a gem and very cozy (loved the stove!). I also love this place because I can bring my two dogs.
Everything was clean and well kept. I would recommend this to any family looking for a quiet get away. The cottage and surrounding area are awesome.
Thanks again to the owners-you make everything accessible and available to your guests! Hope to rent again in future.

PERFECT FOR US!

  • 4 of 5
We rented this cottage for a week and found it very comfortable and convenient. The area is beautiful and there are tons of things to do. The cottage itself is very well equipped. My only complaint there was no chopping board, which seemed a bit strange to me. Also I had a very difficult time finding the canoe and after several emails to the owner, finally discovered it. Direct access to the beach is a bit misleading. It is very close but you walk out the front door and across the street and there is a bit of hill you walk up and then it leads down to the lake. But you are basically walking on other people's property. The other way is to walk around the lake, which if you are carrying things can be a little bit of a hike. The internet worked very well for us, but as far as the direct TV subscription it is basically all sports and very limited. This was very disappointing since my partner has limited physical abilities and would have liked to have more variety. Overall, it's a great cottage- clean, comfortable, everything is in good working conditions and we enjoyed ourselves.

To say there is lake access is a stretch and the so-called beach is reachable only by car . Internet service is spotty (we could get emails but couldn't send them and had no internet accessability). There is an internet cafe called Ruby's in GB which we used for Kindle and PC. The so-called driveway is a joke. I can't imagine where you would park in winter snow. The appliances are new and modern and there are A/C window units in both bedrooms. Plenty of hot water in the shower. Washer-dryer in good working order. Not many games. Only three DVDs. The cottage is part of a private forested community, deeply placed, with dirt roads and some distance from Rte 23.

Owner's Response: As the owner of this cottage by Lake Buel I am not sure that the person who wrote this review really stayed in our home. To say there is no lake access and to get to the beach you must drive your car is blatantly false. The lake access with beach, dock and swim platform is at most 100 yards from the house (see pics of lake access). It is a short walk along a dirt road to get to the lake access. You cannot drive to the lake access or beach nor would you want to because there is no place to park your car once you get there. The house has been rented every week for the past 6 summers and not one person has had a problem with getting to the lake or beach and needing a car to do so. This person also claims that the wireless internet service is spotty and she was able to receive but not send e-mails. She claims she could not get on the internet. What makes this very strange is that I never received a phone call from this renter letting me know they had any of these problems. No other renter has ever had this problem and when I called Verizon to inquire about it they said if you send or receive e-mails you are already on the internet. If you can receive then you can send and be on the internet. Their best guess as to why this person would have a problem is an incompatible computer software program or block on their computer. The house is situated on a dirt road as are all houses down by the lake. There are no paved roads, driveways or garages. There are 3 parking spaces for cars at the house. There is a cutout right in front of the house for one car, a dirt driveway for a second car(see pics with car in driveway) and a 3rd spot directly across the road from the house. Parking in winter is obviously not a problem as we have had a winter seasonal renter every year because of our close proximity to Route 23 and Butternut Ski. We are 1.8 miles from Route 23 and the person who wrote this review feels this is too far! All the roads in the community are plowed in the winter and people are able to drive and park with little or no problem. It sounds as if the person who wrote this review wanted to stay in town with paved roads, parking spots with yellow lines and immediate access to a highway like Route 23. Sorry....not here!!!

COTTAGE IN THE WOODS

  • 5 of 5
My family stayed at the cottage for a few days and had a wonderful time. The house was extremely clean and very well equipped. Everything that was advertised in the ad was in the house and more. The house is all new construction and furnishings and my husband and son loved the flat screen tv in the living room. The gas fireplace in the living room was wonderful and cozy to be around and I cooked most meals in the fully equipped kitchen. The owners were wonderful and easy to deal with and made the rental experience very simple. They took care of everything. The handyman was there to clear snow from the front steps, porch and roads whenever needed. We took nice walks on the roads that wind through the community and the woods. The house is a 5 minute drive into the town of Great Barrington which was very convenient for shopping and going out to eat. Butternut Ski is right down the road and was easy to drop off the kids and come home for coffee. I enjoyed my stay immensely and would recommend the cottage to both family and friends. I am looking foward to my next vacation at the cottage.
