We stayed at this adorable cabin with our children for a week in August. The house was immaculate and very comfortable and cozy. The lake was amazing and we all swam and canoed and fished off the dock most of the day. At night Great Barrington has many great places to eat or to entertain the children. The kids loved to go bowling in town. Barbara was a breeze to work with and wonderful with all her suggestions for places to eat. We are looking foward to returning again.
Thank you again for letting us stay at your beautiful home. We really love it!!
The cottage was very clean and well equipped. The only negative was a coffee maker that takes forever and does not make very good coffee. Furnishing were very clean and comfortable, but be aware there are no closets in the house. Also the screened in porch does not have a screen on the door so it must remain closed.
Parking is an issue. There is a decent spot on the side of the house. We were told that we could park across the road by the garbage. The space is way too narrow and I would not leave a car there, maybe a bike!
The porch is literally six feet away from the dirt road that runs through the community. The view from the porch is of the road and woods and the garbage cans. As people who like to sit out on their porch, not an ideal location.
The lake was a major disappointment. First of all, an earlier review of the property by a Nancy B was on point. It is not a short walk to the lake. It is a very steep hill and the lake is at closer to 200 yards away than the advertised 50 yards. It is a very steep hill, up and down, and a difficult walk. You can follow the road to the lake, but it is a greater distance. A friend of ours, who has mobility issues, was supposed to visit us. We cancelled because she would not have been able to make it down to the lake.
To say there is a beach is a definite reach. It is a small, boat launching area. The lake is very alive with plants and extremely overgrown. I was a camp waterfront director for 10 years and would not have asked my campers to swim with all of the weeds. The floating dock was washed in during an early storm and remained tied to the dock through our stay. We did not swim.
For people who like to spend their time by the water, this was not the place for us.
The web site stated 6 beach chairs, so we did not bring them. When we asked about this upon our arrival, we were told they don't provide them though the web site stated so. When asked, we were told it isn't on the mobile app and she didn't know what we were talking about. this info has since been taken off.
We came for only a couple of days, but felt at home immediately. We cooked, we canoed, we lazed on the dock. Internet worked great, (thank goodness, because we have 2 teens and a tween), TV was just fine. We played monopoly. Grocery & Kmart are 10 min away (But you have to bring your own shopping bags to Price Chopper!). All instructions provided by the owner were right on target. Smooth little getaway for this CT family.
We rented the house for the month of February. The space was enough for our family (2 adults/2 kids). We were there weekends and one week, mostly to ski at Butternut. The house is conveniently located, although you need 4WD/AWD to negotiate the dirt roads with all the snow. The owners were wonderful to work with and attentive to any issues we experienced.
We enjoyed the home and it's cozy, quiet atmosphere. We walked to the lake in the mornings & took in the stars at night. The kids built a nice sled track in the yard. The kitchen is small but adequately appointed. I brought my own knives & pots, as I love to cook. I could see it being much more geared toward summer renters (outdoor grill, blender, etc). The washer/dryer are a stacked, apartment sized. The bedrooms are nice sized with a big, empty dresser in each, however the wall doesn't come up to the ceiling so sound carries between the bedrooms/LR/kitchen (we knew this before renting, however, it took some getting used to). We loved sitting in front of the propane stove/fireplace in the evening playing board games. The porch is nice, separated from the kitchen/LR by a door, which offers some privacy. The beds & futons were comfortable, everyone slept well.
Overall, it was a nice cottage to rent for the month. Thank you.
this review is long overdue - but checking in on our 'home away from home' realized we were amiss. First rented for MLK weekend in the 2011/2012 season when the temps were unseasonably nippy - and we arrived to a freezing house with frozen pipes. Unfortunately, the pilot light was out as well so we had to boil snow to keep ourselves just a tad warmer... here's where amazing ownership comes in. Within minutes, Barbara had someone plowing the driveway and checking on propane - and not too long after we had the house to its full potential. (do consider remote temp control! :) But we loved the house henceforth known as Frozen Chalet as much as to rent for 6 weeks for the 2012/13 season - it really is a lovely place. Fits 4 comfortably, beyond that is a bit of stretch given size of living area and a single bathroom and not much of a mudroom area. The lake that was frozen solid was a huge hit - we spent hours on it each day, even after a full day of skiing - bring your skates (though the alternating melting/freezing might have allowed for the extraordinarily smooth surface). Lovely community with lots of dogs to meet. Up to date kitchen, and love love love the sun room - great place to have your morning coffee or challenge your kids in Monopoly. If Butternut is your mountain this season, give them a shout!!
This was my 2nd stay in six months. Our first stay was during Thanksgiving and our second stay was Easter weekend. Both stays were awesome. The cottage is truly a gem and very cozy (loved the stove!). I also love this place because I can bring my two dogs.
Everything was clean and well kept. I would recommend this to any family looking for a quiet get away. The cottage and surrounding area are awesome.
Thanks again to the owners-you make everything accessible and available to your guests! Hope to rent again in future.
