We have lived in Old Town Alexandria since 1994; we love this small city and hope to share it with others.

The Owner purchased this house in 2000

Charming Old Town Alexandria has many exciting, modern amenities and historical treasures to explore: from Gadsby's Tavern, the Lee Boyhood home, Christ Church, and cobblestone streets to the renowned Torpedo Factory Art Center, upscale shops and a vibrant and diverse restaurant scene. We love living in Old Town and hope guests will discover that this quaint city has as much to offer as the District itself.

A GREAT FAMILY VACATION

  • 5 of 5
We really enjoyed the Hobby House and its amenities as well as its location. The house was beautiful and had character. With three bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms, it provided a wonderful space for our family of four adults, enough to spend apart with personal privacy and enough to spend time together in the form of common meals and movie and games nights and just chats. Also the yard and porch were great areas to enjoy some outdoor time in nature in the middle of a city.

The location was amazing, a nice walk to the wonderful old town and all its great shops and galleries and restaurants right down to the waterfront. Or take the free trolley down King Street to the waterfront! A 4-minute walk in the other direction takes you right to the Metro which takes you to DC and its many sights. And it’s only one stop to National Airport. Although there is a garage where we could leave our car, we really did not need a car at all. (And the fact that Trader Joe’s where we could do our food shopping is close by was an added bonus!) We were really able to combine sight-seeing, college tours and family relaxation seamlessly and effortlessly in this house, and I know we will all remember this week very fondly.

I would recommend this house to any family and I would rent this house again any time I am in the area.

The one quirky thing about the house is that the windows above the doors of each of the bedrooms and the hall bathroom are missing, which reduces the privacy in terms of sounds and smells and light among the rooms.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words; I'm glad you enjoyed your time at the Hobby House (really glad you took advantage of the free trolley on King Street: this is a new service but so nice!). Others have recently noted the lack of door transoms so we will address this promptly; thank you for mentioning it.

REALLY ENJOYABLE STAY

  • 5 of 5
We recently stayed at Hobby House and really enjoyed our time there. The house includes a garage where you can park your car, although it is a tight space, it's free parking. The house comes as advertised and we found if anything, the pictures on the website didn't do it justice, which is unusual. The kitchen was spacious and well equipped. There were plenty of bathrooms (3 for four people) and the house was lovingly restored. It was easy walking distance to a metro stop (about five minutes) and a close walk to old town Alexandria and its shops and restaurants was no more than a 10 minute walk away. It was an ideal location. The only complaints I had were minor. The bedrooms had doors but there was no privacy because there were open windows above each door, which I assume was for circulation. It was also a city house, so there was a lot of traffic noise and the third bedroom had a pullout sofa that wasn't all that comfortable, but overall we were very pleased with the location and would recommend it to anyone.

PERFECT FOR A SMALL FAMILY

  • 5 of 5
Kate was very nice and responsive to our questions. When we got off the Metro, we thought what a great neighborhood and walked a short walk to the house. It was very comfortable and had all the amenities we wanted. Maybe the only issue we would say is that the living room layout and TV was not ideal but it was not an issue for us. There are no really close by stores, but Kate recommended that we order groceries for delivery (less than $10 delivery charge) which is what we did and then walked to Trader Joe's (less than a mile) for other things. The first night we walked into Old Town and had dinner near the waterfront (Potomac) and enjoyed the sights and sounds. We did not have a car and used the Metro for our entire stay. All in all, highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind words! It was our pleasure to have you as a guest at the Hobby House. I find the on-line grocery delivery service to be very convenient and affordable; I'm glad it worked out for you. Also, we'll try to brainstorm possible ways to rearrange the family room area; thank you for the suggestion; we want the house to be a retreat after a long day of site-seeing!

BEAUTIFUL HOME. PERFECT LOCATION!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and two teenaged sons stayed at The Hobby House for one week in June 2011. Though I am from the area and still have friends there, the main attraction was the history and sites of DC.
The home was very comfortable. Our rental car fit in the garage (and only came out twice during the whole trip) and friends who visited us easily found street parking. The sleeping arrangements worked perfectly for us and we found everything we needed. Wireless worked which helped with keeping up with a few work tasks and we spent the mornings and evenings on the cool and quiet porch swing.
BUT the biggest plus was the location! We walked to the Metro station two short blocks away and made our way to museums and memorials, the Zoo and the Kennedy Center and even explored a couple of DC neighborhoods all through the wonderful public transportation system.
The added treat was downtown Old Alexandria. Great food and shops! Starbucks. A free trolley. It couldn't have been more perfect! We even took a boat ride from the Old Town dock (walking distance from the house or just make it down to King St and grab the trolley) to the National Harbor and Mount Vernon.
My kids said this was the trip of a lifetime and it was made possible with this great rental selection! I couldn't recommend it more highly and hope there is a vacancy next time we visit the area.
