Tours from Edinburgh:
There are many delightful sandy beaches along the East Lothian coastline (great golf-course country!), less than an hour's drive from the apartment. A car hire is handy for places out with Edinburgh, but, if staying 3/4 nights and sightseeing in Edinburgh, car hire is not necessary. (There is also an excellent local rail line that will take you to North Berwick in East Lothian in around 40 minutes.) We would advise guests that Edinburgh is a very compact city, easily accessible on foot. We also provide up-to-date details in our apartments of local tour companies that specialise in half-day, 1-day and 2-day tours of nearby attractions such as Rossyln Chapel, and of places a little futher away such as the Highlands, Inverness. You can view these tour companies in advance of your stay: see the 'Useful Links' page on our website for all details - may help you to prebook your itinerary!Edinburgh is around 35 miles from the city of Glasgow - trains go there every 15 minutes from Edinburgh'
Pilrig House's Location:
Pilrig House is 5 minutes' walk, via the park, to the nearest bus-stop, where buses travel every few minutes to the city centre, or, in the other direction to the fashionable 'Shore' area of Leith - Edinburgh's old port - it is an interesting area, teeming with life, on the waterfront with a great mix of restuarants, shops, bars and art galleries. The house is 1 mile exactly from Princes Street - guests can walk there in 15 minutes, and perhaps visit the The National Gallery, or the Portrait Gallery, or just do a spot of shopping in Jenners - Edinburgh's oldest store. The 'Royal Mile' is around 20 minutes' walk away - Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace & Park, The Scottish Parliament, and a whole host of attractions can be found wandering down the High Street! Local food shops, restaurants and banks are all very close to the house. Pilrig House is around 15 minutes' walk to Edinburgh's famous Georgian New Town, and around a 20-minute walk to Edinburgh's lovely Royal Botanical Gardens
Golf:
Edinburgh is a fantastic location for golf fans... as well as many local courses (see our website under 'Useful Links' for plenty of details of golfing links...), it is a great central location to be based, in order too play on some stunning courses, in each direction from the city.
St Andrews Old Course is around an hour-and-a-half's drive from Edinburgh. Turnberry and Carnoustie are both around 2 hours' drive away. East Lothian - only around a half-hour drive - has many golf-courses, including: Gullane, Muirfield (where the Open is often held) & North Berwick. A whole host of other famous Scottish golf-courses can be reached within a few hours by train or car, eg Troon, Gleneagles.
