Duck Forever

Vacation in a brand new cedar shake home just a stone's throw from the Atlantic Ocean in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Draped by age-old live oaks, this beautifully crafted 2,600 square foot vaulted ceiling house offers two master bedrooms with king beds on the lower floor. Above, there is a queen bedroom and bunk room with four twins, which share a Jack and Jill bathroom. All bedrooms have flat screen televisions. The beautifully appointed bedrooms are accompanied by a great room with a fireplace, flatscreen television. large dining bar, kitchen with Bosch dual-fuel range, double door refrigerator with ample freezer drawer, and a fully equipped gourmet kitchen. On the Albermarle Sound side of the great room is a comfy living room with a flatscreen television and on the ocean side is a bright reading room set apart by solid fir pocket doors for quietude or an afternoon nap. The house has WiFi and toll-free long distance telephones in case cell service is low.

Our neighborhood, Sanderling, features a new pool on the Soundside along with tennis courts and a boat ramp. The Sanderling Inn, across the street, has an outside bar, nightly fire pit with local musicians, and two of the area's finest dining establishments...the Life Saving Station and Kimball' Kitchen. A terrific spa is also available.

Nature is one of the many highlights of the Outer Banks. Most any night there are deer, fox, and bunnies roaming the neighborhood. During the day, dolphins feed on the shoals and entertain beach goers...no binoculars needed. A 400-year-old herd of Spanish mustangs roams the dunes about ten miles north of our home. Several companies offer excursions to see the herd or you can take your own four-wheel-drive vehicle onto the beach to try to find the ponies on your own.

Local seafood is abundant. For cooking at home there is no better place to purchase fish than Carawan's on the 158 Bypass. This longtime purveyor features locally caught tuna, snapper, grouper, Mahi Mahi, shrimp, blue crabs, mussels and much more. Go to Maine if you want lobster.

For dining out, there are many choices. The Paper Canoe is walking distance and showcases the spectacular sunsets over the Albemarle Sound. In the town of Duck, there are Red Sky, Roadside Grill, Cravings, and Blue Point restaurants. For casual meals in Duck, the Duck Deli is your best bet. A short drive south to the beach road there is the Rundown Cafe. Anything but rundown, this gem features creative fare including Mahi Mahi burritos. Another southwestern flavored restaurant is the Bad Bean on the 158 Bypass. The smoked beef brisket tacos and burritos are scrumptious.

History lovers get ready for some treats. A short drive south of our house is the site of the Wright Brother's inaugural flight. The museum and outdoor attractions there are a National Park. Further south in Manteo is Fort Raleigh. This is where Sir Walter Raleigh founded the Lost Colony. The gardens and fort are definitely worth a stroll and the outdoor drama depicting the colony's settlement and mysterious demise is terrific for all ages.

Lighthouse fans will find four exceptional examples on the Outer Banks. The closest to Sanderling is the Currituck Light, which is about eight miles north of Duck Forever. This is a beautifully maintained light that can be climbed to reveal spectacular views. Also within a day trip adventure are Bodie Island, Cape Hatteras, and Ocracoke Island Lighthouses. The first two are open for climbing.

Water sports are very popular in the Outer Banks. Just across the main road there is a local company that will set you up with jet skis, parasailing, kayaks, paddle boards, and the like. Or bring your own kite board for fast runs on the Atlantic.

Golf courses abound in our area. We most highly recommend Nags Head Links, which is about a 30-minute drive south. Leave your driver in the bag. This is a tight course that runs along the sound. If you miss the fairways, you'll likely be using a different ball for your next shot.

Shore, pier or deep sea fishing are very popular in the area. There are multiple companies that will set you up, but our favorite is Bob's Bait and Tackle in the center of Duck.

So whether it's peace and quiet you seek on a private beach, a family-friendly neighborhood without traffic, or some of the nation's most popular historic sites, Duck Forever is the best value and newest property in the neighborhood. We are already booking for 2015.

Wonderful home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Duck Fore Ever for our spring break get away, and we had an amazing time in Duck during this off season time. The renovations on the house are amazing, it's a totally different house from when we stayed 2 years ago. Owners Henry and Jane finished the home "top notch" and every detail was thought of. We didn't lack for anything! The home is well appointed, very comfortable with multiple sitting areas and gathering places to make great family memories. Kitchen was comfortable and easy to cook great meals, and bedrooms and bathrooms comfortable and immaculately clean! Beach is just a short easy 1 minute walk away, lovely neighborhood and great sunset views just 5 minute walk away. We can't wait to come back again, we consider this our home away from home!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words! Jane did a lot of the redesign work with a local friend of ours who was the builder, I just wrote checks. We take enjoyment in knowing the we can make a special trip to the beach and Duck a very special memorable one. Henry

Have rented for years and will continue to do so!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot recommend this house highly enough! Our family has rented from Henry and Jane for the last nine years ... both before and after the renovation! They are wonderfully generous people who has supplied everything your family could need at the beach! We LOVED Duck Forever BEFORE, but since the renovation/rebuild, we ADORE IT!! It was a cozy cottage for years ... and now, it is still a cozy house, but with a few more places to "disappear" and "hide"! The sitting/TV watching areas are big and comfortable (with a large, flat screen TVs in each of those rooms); the Reading Room/Den is adorable and full of light for reading (and the pocket doors keep out much of the noise!). The kitchen is BEAUTIFUL with TONS of seating now at the bar as well as at the dining table! With the two [king] master bedroom suites downstairs and two large, kid-friendly bedrooms upstairs (one with a queen bed and 4 single beds in the other ... joined by a Jack and Jill bathroom), two families can easily stay in this house without feeling like you are cramped! And the full bathrooms are super large (each with two sinks) and clean, clean, clean!! With the addition of the large front porch, you can enjoy this shaded house both inside and out! You are 100 yards to the beach access; an easy, flat walk ... plus that same distance in the opposite direction from the walking path. {That path will take you to the pool; about a mile ... a bit of a walk, but a short drive!} The development of Sanderling, itself, is amazing ... trees, wildlife, walking paths (both paved and through the woods), a lagoon and docks for crabbing and fishing, the beach, a pool -- anything for an outdoor lover to enjoy! It will take you and your family no time to settle into this gorgeous space and relax ... and it will soon become your "home away from home" just as it is for us! (Phil & Mindy, Pennsylvania)

In one word - "Fantastic"

  • 5 of 5

This home is wonderful. Well appointed to the smallest detail. We loved the main floor set up allowing us to spend time with the family while cooking, reading, or just hanging out (there are so many areas to relax alone or with the family). The kitchen was of gourmet quality, so nice (and brand new), we didn't mind making meals! The bedrooms were very comfortable and there are 2 masters. Location is perfect, the beach is just a few minutes walk and the pool a short bike ride away. We didn't have to far for attractions, restaurants or shops. The setting is perfect, "serene" is definately fitting. We honestly did want for anything. Definately recommend this cottage and would not hesitate to return.

Owner's Response: Thank you for noticing the extra effort Jane put into the designing and kitchen layout. We both like the open room layout but still want to be able to have private space. As you stated we feel that was achieved.

Beautifully renovated beach house

  • 5 of 5

This is our 3rd time staying at this house, but it was completely unrecognizable due to massive renovations. It used to be a cute little cottage in the woods, but now it's a gorgeous home with cathedral ceilings, huge bedrooms, and a lovely modern kitchen. There are 3 sitting areas: one small, one medium, one large, so like Goldilocks, one will be perfect for you. This also enables families to split up: adults can be watching a movie in one common area while kids play video games in another. You can tell that the house is actually used by the owners (instead of being solely a rental property) because it is fully stocked with everything you could possibly need. One nice feature is that they leave a supply of basic items there, which you're welcome to use and replace if you use up the last of it. For example, we used some of their olive oil and dishwasher detergent, then left some charcoal and toilet paper for the next guests. The bedrooms are very large and comfortable, each with a HD TV and a beautiful, fully updated bathroom. There are hardwood floors throughout, granite countertops in the kitchen, and brand-new stainless steel appliances. For all intents and purposes, this is a completely new home in 2014, and it is magnificent. The owner is extremely responsive and easy to work with, and the house is spotlessly clean. We would definitely recommend this house to anyone who wants to stay in a perfectly-appointed home on the Outer Banks, and we plan to return every year.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your words, my wife and I have gone to great lengths to make sure the cute cottage and our tree property was kept in the renovation. The home was striped down to the studs, replacing every wire, pipe, AC ducts etc.. Our goal was to build a home we can use more often and preserve the area at the same time. We rent homes ourselves and always find it odd and cheated when a home is not equipped with the basics, thank you for noticing that extra touch!

Fantastic Beach Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is truly a gem. It has just been remodeled and everything is bright, new, airy and spotless. It was such a comfortable place to stay with a beautiful new kitchen and the beds were so comfortable that we all slept very, very well! The decor is beachy and cute. The hardwood floors throughout make it cool, comfortable, and clean. We loved it. The location is also terrific.... just a short walk to the beach and no busy roads. We loved the fact that the house is nestled under a canopy of trees and we could always take a cool shade break back at the house. The front porch is huge with ample room for everybody to hang out, which we did on two of the days that were rainy. Henry, the owner was a pleasure to work with and always got back to me right away when I called or had a question. Henry also gave us a list of suggestions for things to do in the area since we had never been to the Outer Banks. It was very helpful. We loved the area and house and would definitely stay here again in a heartbeat.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kinds words! Jane did a wonderful job remodeling the home, I even have problems believing the original home is some where in that renovation. Glad that you enjoy all the extra benefits of the tree line that we enjoy too.

A Wonderful Escape!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Henry for the most very delightful stay!! I was somewhat concerned about the trees - I mean who doesn't go to NC with the hope of getting some sun and tanning opportunities?! But wow, what a blessing those trees were! Not only did they provide a wonderful breeze, but after a few hours at the beach, they were the most welcome respite! This home is tucked into this nice little neighborhood/grove - while the towns and beaches around here may be crowded, this home provides a nice and peaceful escape! And it is exactly as described....a short walk to the beach and a short walk to the Sound, so we were able to witness both beautiful sunrises as well as magnificent sunsets!!! And this is the Best Stocked Kitchen that I have ever experienced in all my vacation rentals! It even has a muffin pan, and big stock pans, and a wonderful array of spices! The home was perfect! It is clean, well stocked, and comfortable! Thanks Henry for sharing your home! If we get back to NC, there is no doubt in our minds that we will come back to Duck Fore Ever!!

Owner's Response: We always get a kick when guests question the trees while searching for a beach house. Then the experience comes back the same, every one marvels at the canopy the trees have on the home and street. We never had a hurricane issue because they break the storm winds up. The private neighborhood makes the beach seem private as well in our area of Duck. Thank you for your kind words!
