|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
Step into Paradise when you enter the secluded sun drenched shores of Puako Beach. It's natural beauty is enriched by it's history of being an ancient Hawaiian Fishing Village. Our condo sits next to the ocean, and is the most affordable three bedroom, two full baths with all the amenities you will need to feel totally comfortable during your stay. The Village is made up of Million Dollar Luxury Beachfront Homes, our condo complex, and the General Store next door. There are seven beach access areas, where you will find incredible swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, surfing, or whatever makes you happy! You can stroll the coral reefs, find hundreds of tide pools, watch dolphins at play, and it's also home to the Green Sea Turtles, that bask in the sun along the shoreline. During the winter months you can watch the Whales migration.
Hidden away, between several major resorts, yet close to everything, Puako Beach is the 'Hidden Treasure'
of the gorgeous Kahala Coastline
Paradise awaits you as you enter Puako Beach!: This is the most affordable 3 bedroom two bath condo, next to ocean, with all the amenities needed,
in Puako Beach.
Puako is my idea of a perfect place to stay. It's small and charming, with a quaint country store and walkable streets. Why stay in a cookie cutter resort? This condo is typical of the time it was built, unpretentious and comfortable. Although unit is on the first floor, it is very quiet and the shrubs shield the lanai so it doesn't feel exposed (just ask the gekkos). Having 2 full bathrooms is a big plus. The small galley style kitchen is well equipped (I'd love to see a liquid measuring cup,but that's just me). The condo has a closet of assorted beach gear to use and lots of towels. The washer & dryer came in handy and we used the gas grill daily. Bedrooms all have ceiling fans. (NOTE: keeping sliding doors and entry door open allows air to flow freely and condo stays cool ) The condo bldg has a great pool or you could walk a few minutes to access Puako bay for swimming and snorkeling. The building has recycling bins (yeah!! - I love to recycle - feels like home) Bonus feature: building has its own lemon, lime, and grapefruit trees and we were lucky enough to get some of the fruit.
Puako is centrally located and we easily drove up and down the coast for touring , beaching (Hapuna and A' beach), and shopping. I highly recommend going to the local fish market in Kawaihae ( on Hgwy 270, about a 10 minute drive) and across the street from the fish market is Avenue Shave Ice, the BEST shave ice we found on the island.
The condo owner is very nice to work with and takes time to make sure instructions and everything are in order. She even called me by phone to answer my questions directly rather than play tag with email. It's chancey to rent off the web, but Karen is trustworthy.
I'm saving my pennies to go back there.
So glad we stayed at Karen's condo in Puako! It was everything we like -- convenient, CLEAN, well-maintained by a friendly staff, and well-stocked with kitchen utensils and beach gear. Beach 69 is within walking distance and is great for snorkeling, and the little community is friendly with a great walking boulevard and lots of beach access. Close to everything, it seems, without being in one of the crowded resorts.
Karen is very particular, and I am totally glad she is! Makes her condo a great place to stay. I hope to go back!
After reading the reviews of Karen's condo very carefully, we decided to book 6 nights here for our family of 4 to stay as a part of our Christmas vacation. First of all, we appreciated her flexibility in allowing a 6 night stay, when most rentals are restricting to 2-week minimums during the holidays and they double the price! Outrageous. Anyhow, Karen's place looked like a winner, it was close to the beaches we love, but out of the tourist area. We knew it was an older building that had been nicely updated. We have stayed in a lot of vacation rentals on most of the islands and while this was not a "luxury" condo, it was very homey and made us feel like we "belonged" in Puako and were not just tourists. We have always dreamed of living on the island for all or part of one year, and we would probably rent a place just like this one, if we ever did make that dream come true. As for the creature comforts, the small kitchen was just fine for what we needed, the grill worked well, and the store next door was perfect when we needed an extra bottle of juice or some homemade salsa, which was delicious (the owners of the store are very friendly and thinking about opening a restaurant soon). Beds were comfortable. Fans were provided in every room and there was always a cool breeze coming off the ocean. The pool was small but very relaxing for sunbathing and reading. There is very good snorkeling just a short walk away from the condo. Just walk past the recycling bins on the North side of the property, cross the street and walk through the short beach access path. Karen was easy to work with and very responsive; she returned our deposit within 10 days of our return. For the price, you cannot find a better place to stay on the Kohala coast! There are similar condos in the building for rent that charge more, probably because they are higher up and have ocean views (Karen's condo is on the ground floor). We really enjoyed our stay in Puako and look forward to coming back and staying longer next time!
My family shared this condo and it was comfortable with the two bathrooms and 3 rooms. The kitchen is a 1 person kitchen but is well stocked with lots of handy cooking tools. The property is very clean and well managed and as advertised. The owner is very responsive to emails and leave good information for the neighborhood and property. The photo is of the a famous beach (beach 69) in the Hapuna State Park adjacent to this small neighborhood in Puako. Directly across the street from the property is a mix of tide pools, a diving reef and some salt/pepper sandy stretches accessible via shoreline access points to the north and south of the property. The residents of the condominium complex were all welcoming and kind. We look forward to returning.
We've stayed at many of the units at the Puako Beach Condos. This one was certainly excellently equipped! The free wi-fi was a huge plus. First floor convenience was also nice. So easy to run next door to the market or across the street to the beach access. Most evenings we walked over to watch the sunset, taking along some snacks. Although Mahukona has excellent snorkeling opportunities, nothing can beat the convenience of walking across the street and into a lovely semi-protected area. After several days, we knew exactly where we'd find each kind of fish.
Twice we drove to the end of Puako Drive and watched the surfers. While walking along the beach, we also discovered an ancient petroglyph.
Also, the owner was very quick to answer any questions we had before we traveled, and so kind.
We just recently returned to the mainland after a week's stay at Karen's condo in Puako. We have stayed at this complex before, but this was our first time in this unit. We loved it here! So clean & comfortable & NO BUGS!! The kitchen is well-equipped with anything you may need & the general store next door is very handy. We especially appreciated all the portable fans available since the weather was very humid that week. The location is awesome: you can either walk to the sandy beach, or the tidepool beach with all the turtles, crabs, fish, etc. etc. My husband took our daughter & son-in-law snorkeling every morning at Beach 69. They had flown out from NYC to join us for their yearly vacation and love Puako. We barbecued fish from the Kawaihae fish market a couple times which was a real treat. We also took advantage of the bananas & limes available on the grounds-an added plus!! The furniture & beds are very comfortable. We all felt very much at home. Karen, the owner, was great to work with; very responsive & thorough. We found the condo instructions to be very common sense & reasonable. We will most definitely return. Mahalo!!
Puako Beach is about 30 miles from Kailua Kona, 25 miles from the Kona Airport, on the beautiful Kahala Coastline. The home of The Parker Ranch, the town of Waimea, is only 12 miles up the hill, where there are great restaurants, two major grocery stores, and many other shops and stores. From Waimea, go another 20 miles or so, and you can be at Waipio Valley, a breathtakingly beautiful tourist attraction, with waterfalls, and a Black sand beach. Hapuna Beach, one of the top 10 beaches in the world, is two miles away from Puako Beach. A day trip to the Volcano National Park, home of the most active volcano in the world, is about 100 miles from Puako
Beach. There are hundreds of excellent dining places both expensive and reasonable at any of the major resorts within a 10 mile drive, as well as world-class golf courses, luaus, and shopping.
