About Deane Shokes

We love Kauai...and love to travel throughout the world! Here we're on the Inca Trail in Peru. When not traveling, we live in Menlo Park, CA (near Stanford University).

Deane Shokes purchased this house in 1998

Why Deane Shokes chose Princeville

We had rented in the area, knew we loved the Princeville area and felt it would be a good investment.

What makes this house unique

We arrive at our home and head straight to the beach (6 min. walk) or Queen's Bath!! Make a tee time for next day's golf, then hors d'oeuvres and sunset on the lanai and grilled fresh fish for dinner! So easy to relax and enjoy paradise.

the most beautiful home ever!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I rented this wonderful home for a week at the end of August. Everything was so clean, so well kept, such a lovely and convenient location. It was adjacent to a beautiful resort and very quiet. We particularly enjoyed the native chickens running around here and there on the golf course. Walking distance to beach. Just perfect...we hope to return alot.

We stocked up at Costco in Lihue, then were very pleased when we arrived at the house. You never really know till you get there. Our group consisted of four couples, one of whom had three young children. The downstairs master worked well for their family. The four and five year olds slept happily on the floor, and the one year old slept in the pack 'n play in the roomy walk-in-closet. Each of the other couples had a bedroom, although the second upstairs bedroom has a double bed and shares the master bathroom. The upstairs master bathroom has absolutely no doors, so there is no privacy, which may be important when you are sharing the bath with another couple. But it is a very nice bathroom and plenty roomy.

The location was wonderful, backing up to a gorgeous golf course. Just know that the grounds people start very early in the morning. It seemed only the upstairs master bedroom couple heard them though. The kitchen has everything you could need for cooking, and the garage has lots of beach equipment from chairs and mats to bikes to snorkeling gear. They have coolers so you can take lunch with you.

There is no A/C but the house is designed with louvered windows and doors for wonderful ventilation. It did take a day or two for our little one to adjust to the humidity. Be sure to drink lots of water. The only down side was the refrigerator. It did not cool down enough so we never had ice and had to put the milk in the freezer side for it to get cold. There was a working refrigerator in the garage, but that was not very convenient. We called the manager, and he responded quickly. He was aware of the problem, so we were surprised that nothing had been said about that. A note on the counter would have been nice as we could have put the milk and frozen items in the garage fridge that first evening had we known. The manager did bring us a bag of ice, but ice trays would have worked much better. But we made do, and he said the fridge would be repaired or replaced after we left. Hopefully, that has been done.

Overall, it was a wonderful place to stay and very close to Hanalei Bay, which was perfect for the kids with gentle waves and a soft, sandy beach. We hiked down to Queens bath, which is very close, and the guys took the hike at the end of the road. We enjoyed a helicopter ride, the Smith Family Luau and lunch and the train ride at the Kilohana Plantation. We also took the river barge up the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto. We would rent this home again!

Owner's Response: We're so glad you enjoyed our home and the area! We are so sorry the refrigerator was not working well. We had freon added before your stay, but that didn't solve the problem, so we'll be sending you some money back to make up for the inconvenience. It has been completely repaired now!!

Comfortable home

We found this to be a very homey and quiet place to relax in between adventures on the island. Good towels and beds and the kitchen is very good. The resort next door has a paved trail to St Regis beach. You can catch rides up and down on the resort golf cart for a small tip. The trail to Hideaways is about a 20 minute walk (very small parking lot at top, if you hang a round a bit, spots open up) but beware that the trail down is not an easy walk and must be taken very carefully. Once there, the beach is fabulous. Queens bath was not usable with the surf during our stay, but is a good walk just to see. Locals watched our attempts to go in and just said , "you know, there are other places to swim..." Favorite spots were: Hideaways, Banana Joes, Chocolate tour, Tunnels beach, Bar acuda in Hanelei, Lapperts in Poipu. Safeway in Kapaa is a good place to shop on your way to Princeville and there is a Hawaiian dreams ice cream shop there. Costco is 45 minutes and is a good place to stop on the way home from the south and west sights. Take cooler bags from the garage for the grocery store trips.

Great stay on golf course!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this huge house for 8 days with 9 people (6 adults, 3 teenagers) and it totally served our needs and we felt right at home. The house was clean and comfortable, and had plenty of room. The decor was beautiful and the views, while not necessarily of the ocean, were still beautiful. Wish it hadn't been so windy so we could have made more use of the upper patio/deck.

This was my first time staying on a golf course, and wasn't sure what to expect. Previous stays in Princeville were nearer the ocean. Luckily, it was the slow season, and there were very few golfers. Not that they were a problem, really, but not sure I'd want 3 or 4 times that in the summer months. That still wouldn't keep me from staying there, though.

It is an easy (10 mins down/ 15 mins up) steep walk to the beach near the St. Regis on a paved path. We appreciated the many beach supplies available in the garage (snorkel equip, water shoes, boogie boards, ice chests, chairs, bikes), plenty for the 9 of us. The bikes needed a little work for a smooth ride, but nothing unexpected.

The toaster quit on us the first day, but after staying and experiencing other houses in the past, that was minor.

The upstairs bedroom and bath don't have window coverings, so at first, it was a little strange showering and changing within clear view of the golf course and neighbors, but we realized the angle from the second floor to outside would make it difficult for anyone to see inside too much. And we soon felt fine with it since it allowed a great view of the sky, trees and a small piece of the ocean.

All-in-all a wonderful and comfortable house. Very well taken care of.

A 10 minute drive to Hanalei Town and Bay. Check out Tahiti Nui for evening drinks or for their Luau, if you've never been to one (everyone needs to do one once!). It's a smaller, warm family style Luau with live music, not the lavish, cold production of some other luaus on the island.

A long walk or 5 minute drive to the Foodland Grocery Store.

Thanks to the owners for an easy stay, and for all the local information.

Owner's Response: Eric, we're very happy our home worked well for your family. Thank you for letting us know about the toaster. We're taking your suggestion and adding a regular, 4-slot toaster in addition to the toaster oven. We appreciate knowing what our guests need! Mahalo, Deane

Very nice, but.......

Beautiful home, great location, very well equipped, loved the birds and geckos. Now the not so great stuff...VERY BUGGY. I don't mind a few critters, honest, but the walls at night were literally covered with insects. Especially in the upstairs rooms. We tried to keep the windows and doors closed but the screens and latches need serious updating. We had to OFF the kids before bed and they still got bit. I would also recommend not staying here in the humid summer months due to the lack of A/C. It got really miserable. If you are modest don't use the upstairs shower because there are no window coverings. At all. None. And there is a window in the shower right at chest level and you are looking down at the neighboring house. Kinda creepy. Oh, and the gas grill was in need of and upgrade.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback, as we always want to make guests both welcome and comfortable. In a tropical climate, humidity and insects are unavoidable. For comfort, we do provide both ceiling fans and additional fans in each room for nights without the cooling trade winds. Thanks to your feedback, we are being even more vigilant to keep screens and doors repaired so no small holes provide entry for mosquitos. We apologize for your discomfort. Deane & Kathy
