Merida House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Casa de los Mosaicos (House of Tiles) is located on a quiet street between two parks in the centre of Merida, Parques Santa Lucia and Santiago. It is literally four blocks to the main square, called the Plaza Grande or Zocalo. Here you can watch the world go by, sit in the traditional confidantes (chairs), eat ice cream in the shaded passageways around the square, and enjoy the artisans stalls set up on weekends when the centro is closed to traffic. Walk easily to nearby shops, museums and restaurants. And at night, watch the salsa dancing in the parks and maybe even give it a whirl yourself!

All our rooms have high beamed ceilings typical of these old colonial houses, with both mini-split air conditioners and ceiling fans. The kitchen and bathrooms have been lovingly renovated with modern fixtures and appliances, all centered around a courtyard with a plunge swimming pool and a rooftop deck... a great place for an outdoor breakfast or glass of wine while watching the sunset. And because this is the perfect Merida vacation rental, it even has a garage for your car! Look no further, Casa de Los Mosaicos is the perfect vacation home in Merida Mexico!

Where is this beautiful house, you might ask? Well, it is located in a very good neighborhood in the Centro Historico of Merida, which is the capital of the State of Yucatan in Mexico. Yucatan is one of three states on the Yucatan Peninsula. Merida is the largest city on the peninsula, and has been here for over 1000 years. The city is three hours west (by car) of Cancun, and a million miles away culturally. Merida was an important Mayan city before the Spaniards came to Mexico. Then it became an important colonial city... the Spaniards tore down the Mayan temples and used the stones to build the soaring Catholic cathedral (the oldest in Latin America) that graces the town square, or Plaza Grande.

Merida's weather is called tropical desert. This means it is hot and humid in the summertime, but warm and lovely in the winter months (about October to March). There are two rainy seasons: one in the late summer months, and one in the early part of the calendar year. Whenever it rains, it's usually just a shower that dissipates quickly, leaving a lovely clean city for you to enjoy.

The city of Merida houses more than a million souls, but you'd never know it... it is so tranquil, relaxed, friendly and safe. Walking around the downtown area, you'll feel as if you've gone back in time and are walking around a small colonial town. There are many cultural events to enjoy that are free, as well as restaurants, bars, coffee shops, museums, shops, a zoo, movie theaters, a symphony, galleries, parks and much more... all within walking distance of Casa de Los Mosaicos!

About Jane and Clive Galton

Jane and Clive are British and have been travelling since we were born, Jane in Malta and Clive in Montevideo. From then on we travelled the world separately - Jane to Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand and the US, Clive to Spain, India, Iran, Kuwait, Greece and Peru. We got together in 1989 and just kept travelling, to Oman, Nigeria and in 2002 to Mexico City, where we spent 5 very happy years.

Jane is passionate about animals and animal conservation, while Clive is passionate (Jane would say obsessional!!) about fishing! But we also love travelling, going to the movies and the theatre, and taking in the odd pop/rock concert!

Clive has recently retired after working for over 30 years for an organisation called The British Council, and Jane has also just recently retired, but is staying very busy with charitable pursuits, mostly related to animals.

Jane and Clive Galton purchased this house in 2005

Why Jane and Clive Galton chose Merida

We moved to Mexico City in 2002 and fell in love with the country and its people, and in particular with Merida and its Mayan history and culture, which is still so alive and such an integral part of life here.

After so many years spent travelling, usually to warm places, Jane and Clive don't really do winters any more!! So we were looking for somewhere warm to escape to when the nights began to draw in in London, which is where we now spend a large part of our time. And Merida certainly fits that bill!

What makes this house unique

We love the beautiful old features of our house, the exquisite old tiles (we're told they are originally from Italy), the high high ceilinged rooms with their beams.

And we love being in the centre of the city, so that we can more or less walk everywhere and enjoy all the amenities that Merida has to offer without having to get into a car. One of our treats is to wander in to the centre to one of our favourite cafes for a leisurely Mexican breakfast, delicious! Or wander down to the Zocalo for a delicious home made coconut ice-cream!

But we also have our own garage (which is such a boon in Merida, where parking can be a problem) so we can jump into our car and head off to the beach if we want to.

And there is some wonderful saltwater fly fishing (remember that Clive is passionate about fishing?!) to be had in a number of spots quite close to Merida - Campeche, Rio Lagartos, Progreso, San Felipe, Holbox.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Casa de Los Mosaicos is a lovely house and a great place to make your Merida base. It is located very centrally, only a short walk to the main square, and near many restaurants, bars and shops. From Merida we were able to take several day trips to the surrounding historic and natural sights.

The house was spacious and comfortable, and very well equipped, and the courtyard with plunge pool was pleasant in the afternoons.

We would be more than happy to stay here again, and recommend a stay!

Idyllic colonial house, in a fabulous central location in Old Merida!

  • 5 of 5

I expected Casa Las Mosaicos to be beautiful and I was not disappointed. The interior floors are covered with local pasta tiles and this, coupled with the very high traditional beamed ceilings, created a cool, airy and authentic Mexican feel.

As we were staying for almost 3 weeks, I was delighted to find that all the appliances were spotlessly clean and new, the kitchen was well- stocked with attractive tableware, cooking pans and every utensil you would need to take advantage of the delicious local produce. The enormous American style fridge was much appreciated, not least for the ice cubes which cooled my ‘Margarita en las rocas’ cocktails, sipped on balmy evenings in the colourful patio courtyard. After long days sightseeing it was fabulous to be able to sit in the courtyard and take a cooling plunge in the pool before making it onto a sun lounger for a rest! The bathrooms were both finished to a high standard and hot water was always available. The rooms were cool at night using a fan, but there were efficient air conditioners if needed.

I loved the location as you could easily walk to a range of local Mexican restaurants, cafes , ice cream parlours and many traditional colonial squares where the locals dance and gather with their families to enjoy the cool evenings.

On a more practical note, the garage and off- street parking was a real advantage as we were able to make many daytrips to the surrounding attractions; cenotes, Mayan ruins, beaches and the bird reserves at Celestun. The comprehensive visitors’ file gave all the necessary information for a successful and stress-free time based at the house. The maid service was excellent (weekly) and the pool was also checked regularly. The owners were very helpful when we booked and I found the whole new experience of renting in Merida just perfect. I’m definitely returning next year as there is so much more to see!

Wonderful place in Old Merida, within easy walking distance to the centre

  • 5 of 5

Janie and Clive made planning the holiday easy before our arrival. Loads of help on travel and some good tips on places to stay for the rest of our holiday. We loved the house and found the facilities of high quality and of classic colonial style. We felt transported back in time with the decor and fittings reflecting the colonial period.

We tried many of the local restaurants, who served the best that the Yucatan offers. We even tried to work off some weight with the early morning zumba classes held in a local sports stadium!

Merida is a lovely place to visit. The location and quality of Casa de los Mosaicos makes exploring Merida a real holiday high. We would happily return to Casa de los Mosaicos.

Cool oasis in perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in this lovely old fashioned house in the best location for exploring Merida, central but quiet. The house was cool with attractive local furniture and decorations, the bedrooms were very airy and comfortable and bathrooms large with marble floors and walls. Andrea the manager was great and very helpful, organising day trips with a brilliant guide. All in all a wonderful house, beautifully equipped and perfectly placed.

Owner's Response: Just wanted to make sure that people reading the review did not mistake "old fashioned" for lack of modern facilities. I think the reviewer wanted to indicate that the house is old colonial with the high ceilings and beautiful tiled floors. Please note that the house was renovated to a very high standard with all modern facilities.

I spent a magical week in Merida in this charming house, which was perfectly placed for a short walk into the centre of town. The house is traditional with a great feeling for the local art and colours. The pool was a godsend and the rooms spacious and clean. I would happily return.

Terrific In All Respects

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for nine nights, and it was all we could have asked for. The house is beautifully maintained, with all the conveniences - modern kitchen, AC, big flat panel TV with cable, washer/dryer, even a small wading pool. It's located on a quiet and safe block, only about a 10-minute walk from the city center, 15 minutes from the Paseo Montejo and its upscale shopping and restaurants. There's even a really nice, and very cute, Italian restaurant only a few doors down from the house. Even better is the service provided by Andrea, the property manager. She hooked us up with two great drivers for day trips to Chichen Itza and Celestun, and when our niece came down with food poisoning, arranged for a terrific doctor to make a house call. You couldn't ask for better service. Merida is a wonderful city, and staying in this house only enhanced our experience.

Ideal Location

  • 5 of 5

Casa de los Mosaicos is as lovely as the photos illustrate. We were comfortable in the house as soon as we entered the door. The local house manager was waiting for us after our late night arrival from Houston. She showed us around and explained the features of the home, provided a cell phone to use locally and provided general information about the area. She had previously asked if we wanted her to pick up something for the fridge for our breakfast the next day … very thoughtful. The lovely kitchen is well equipped with dishes, utensils, pots/pans, etc. The living room was cozy with a flat screen TV & DVD … the master bedroom was roomy, the bed comfortable … the Wi-Fi worked very well … and a nice selection of books was available. Every room had an A/C unit. The plunge pool was definitely a plus as we needed to cool down a few times a day. An attached garage is available if you rent a car. The property was very well maintained and all the staff were friendly and helpful.

The house is in an ideal location … almost equidistant from Santiago Park, Santa Lucia Park and the Central Plaza! Conveniently located in Santiago Park is a Mercado with wonderful fresh vegetables and fruits, a small Aki supermarket for other essentials, and dancing on Thursday nights. We walked everywhere and could easily take buses to the beach or slightly more out of the way sites. We felt very safe all the time we were there.

It's a quick walk to the Plaza and to shops and restaurants. One-half block down the street is a terrific Italian restaurant Dadaumpa Ristobar and across the street is a vegetarian restaurant Lo Que Hay Café.

Everything went smoothly from the day we booked the Casa. Jane is an absolute delight with whom to correspond with fast replies to our emails and very quick return of our deposit. We enjoyed ourselves tremendously during our 10 days at the Casa. If you stay here, you will not be disappointed. We highly recommend it.
