Enjoy the fresh breezes and water views while relaxing on one of the many expansive decks, or from every room in this spacious, airy, and beautifully decorated vacation home. Cathedral ceilings and large Palladian windows allow as much nature inside as good housekeeping and the weather permits. From this strategic location on top of the dunes, you can see the sun rise over the ocean and set over the Currituck Sound.

Golf, Tennis, Biking, Summer Theatre/park are nearby: Duck's new park and amphitheater is now open. Check the Town of Duck.com link on my personal website for scheduled performances and group activities - music, stage plays, morning yoga, etc. Many golf courses are located near your new beach home (links to each are included on our personal website - click on link below in Owner Info), as well as indoor and outdoor tennis courts with professional lessons, clinics, and exercise facilities. There are massage and health spas nearby. Safe bike trails have been created from Corolla through Duck, down through the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Community streets are also safe for biking, walking, skating and ambling - an ideal beach neighborhood. More details at the link below or www.BeachVacationDream.com

Your fully equipped vacation home, owned and maintained by a property management professional of 30+ years, awaits you, in immaculate condition. (Average Customer Review - Five Stars )

Check-in and Checkout: Normally occurs on Sundays after May, to take advantage of reduced traffic as opposed to Saturdays in prime season. Your 'door key' will be a 4-digit code unique to your reservation, so no more being locked out when you 'rush back' from the beach, plus check-in is done by e-mail, another customer convenience.

A few recent messages left in the Guest Book include:

A partial week guest in April:

“First time to the Outer Banks. We were able to get our family together to spend a memorable and fun Easter. We all loved Duck with its quaint stores, popcorn shop, and friendly people. Saw the Wright Brothers Museum, The Dunes, Lost Colony, Elizabethan Gardens and Aquarium. All were great and fun things to do. It was generally cloudy and very windy, with temps in the 50’s, but everyone had a great time. The accommodations were wonderful and we would stay here again. The home was clean and the furnishings were bright, cheery, and comfortable for nine of us, which included ourselves and our daughters, son-in-law and grandchildren. We left on Monday for our trip home to PA. (J&M)

From May guests:

Hey Bryan, We really enjoyed a beautiful week @ Byrd Sanctuary. What a lovely and beautifully maintained home. Great time catching up with your sister. What a special person. Second time here, and we hope to be back soon. (R&S)

Dear Bryan: We had a beautiful week with our friends here. Best weather we have experienced here over the years. Love Colington Café and Red Sky restaurants. Excellent food! Art’s Place has gone downhill. Byrd Sanctuary, however, is still standing TALL! Thanks for sharing. (W&G)

Bryan, Thanks for keeping the house so nice; we love our home away from home. The weather was perfect all week. Relaxing fun in the sun. Thanks for sharing your home. (The K’s)

Bryan: Very very nice home. Thanks for letting us visit. Must say the house was spotless – passed this Marine’s inspection. Great view. Very nice area – quiet and close to water. (The T’s)

From June guests:

(Long list of people and towns.) Thanks for a great week!! We love this house. Will be back next year for the third time. (They got married in the house their first year. Planned their wedding on the beach, but weather wasn’t conducive. Already reserved for next year. Ed. BB)

The Sxxxx family visited from West Bloomfield, MI – We had a wonderful, much needed, week of beach and sun and fun. The house was perfect for us – all the beds were comfortable and the kitchen was equipped with everything we needed! We cooked every night and loved the kitchen! We spent hours on the porch, and hours on the beach! Thank you so much for a fabulous vacation home – I hope to be back again next summer. “Perfect Weather” “Perfect Vacation Home.” '

As mentioned, complete 2014 comments are available at the link below in Owner Info., but here are the October and November comments surrounding what I consider an unfair review by a recent October guest:

October

'What a wonderful week we have had!!The first three nights we had 3 college friends and 3 husbands. On Wednesday we sent the guys home and 3 more “girls” arrived!! (Everyone over fifty.) This was the perfect house for all of us! Many thanks for sharing your beautiful home with the “Radford Ladies”!!!

Bryan – As always, thanks for a great stay at the Byrd Sanctuary. This time we had Jeff’s mom here from Dunedin, New Zealand – it’s the first time she’s ever seen the NC coast and she loved it – from Corolla to Hatteras and of course much time in Duck!! Thanks again - (J & crew)

November

Beach girls!!! We returned to this lovely abode. What a fab house to celebrate 28 years of cherished friendships (whole string of hearts.) Sunsets, walks on the beach, good food & LOTS of giggles. Thank you. (KS)'

About Bryan Byrd

Forty years in a real estate business and now retired ensures your accommodation will be legitimate, of high commercial standards, and maintained by someone with the knowledge and time to ensure this is not just thrown together with seconds from a primary home somewhere. What is in the home was bought for THIS home, and input from guests is always sought and highly valued. I have a 'board of directors' of repeat guests and an Interior Designer that would advise if something were needed to ensure a complete, carefree vacation experience.

Bryan Byrd purchased this house in 1990

Why Bryan Byrd chose Duck

Inspiringly and beautifully constructed and maintained by a professional in the hospitality/real estate business. This home will elevate your time at the beach. (No actual elevators, though.)

What makes this house unique

Created for your benefit. Pleasing features abound.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We hate to leave tomorrow! We love the house – so well furnished and equipped. I think October is perfect, hardly any traffic and so peaceful. We needed a good rest. Our favorite restaurants are the Blue Point Grille, & Colington Café. Great food. We enjoyed the walk into Duck and the beach. We drove down to Rodanthe to see the “Nights in Rodanthe” house. People were so nice. The wild ponies of Corolla aren’t very wild but the beach is gorgeous. Don’t miss the Wright Bros. Nat. Park in Kitty Hawk. Best of all for a bird watcher was the Pea Island Nature preserve. Beautiful birds and scenery. Forgot to mention – saw two red foxes come through the yards on Widgeon Drive. Life is good. ? Lynchburg, VA

John called later and said "The home was truly five stars. Perfect."

Truely a Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

We have been enjoying this beach house for nearly 20 years and have always enjoyed the house, the beach, and the area. The house has all the amenities necessary for a trouble free beach stay. If something is missing or broken the owner has it replaced or fixed as soon as it's reported. This is a great place with great views and conveniently located between sound and ocean.

Delightful Stay in Duck!

  • 5 of 5

Whether you frequent the OBX or this is your first time, Duck is the place to stay and Byrd Sanctuary is the place to lay your head at night!!! We have been so fortunate to stay in this home several consecutive summers and it's definitely a HOME AWAY FROM HOME!!! Close to the beach, but somewhat removed from the more commercial areas of OBX (which is why we enjoy going to Duck in the first place), we couldn't imagine staying anywhere else but the Byrd!

Paradise at the beach!

  • 5 of 5

We once again enjoyed a wonderful stay at this delightful Duck vacation home. This was our 19th year renting this house. The owner has continued to keep the house in top shape and prepare annually for a great summer for all. The view is inspiring for the ocean and delightful for the sound. The kitchen is well supplied and the personal touches abound such as the foot rest in the outside shower that allows one to put on shoes without getting sand on your feet. see will be back next year

Annual Gathering!

  • 5 of 5

Our adult group of high school friends (from the late '70s) travel from 4 different states each June to enjoy this comfortable cottage. 2 years ago we even had to move our beach wedding inside the cottage, due to bad weather and the large open upstairs living area was perfect with the airiness and the tall windows with such a great view. The layout of the cottage is very convenient, it's very clean and we especially enjoy the large deck with comfortable deck furniture that has views of the ocean and sound. Another plus is the very attentive owner. He is so easy to work with and accommodating should you have questions or any problems. He has also tried to think of everything you should need for your stay, plus some! That makes a big difference. So much better than renting from a large rental company that only stocks the standard specific items. We had one couple fly in and they thought they would have to rent beach chairs...nope, There were extras on hand at the cottage. There's always an abundance of kitchen utensils, pots and pans, pitchers - you name it! Having the linens included helped a lot too. This is just a great cottage that is very clean and comfortable with just a short walk to the beach in a great Duck neighborhood! We are booked again for 2015 and hope to gather at The Byrd Sanctuary for many years to come!!

Nice View

  • 3 of 5

We chose this home because of it's location to the Ocean and because this rented as a partial week option. The house was satisfactory although older. The furniture is all older and seats broken down. We arrived to ants in the kitchen, it happens I guess. We purchased ant traps to help the situation. The coffee maker didn't work, which was a hardship the first thing in the AM. The bed in the master bedroom is as hard as the floor, for which I am still suffering a hip pain two months later. When you sign the paperwork saying you pay a deposit that will be returned in 45 days, let me tell you, it's the full 45 days your money is tied up. I feel this is unnecessary as the owner knows as soon as the cleaning company reports their findings. The gentleman who works the cleaning company was the best part of this rental experience. Very nice and helpful. We also experienced a rodent, I'm guessing, of some nature spent the whole night one night trying to claw it's way under the floor of the master bedroom. Kept us awake all night. The best part of this stay was the view. We prefer Corolla and would stay there again in the future. Duck is ok, but the houses are older.

Owner's Response: I was surprised to receive this negative review after many years of nothing but positive reviews and repeat guests. After reviewing it with my "praiseworthy" Property Manager, we agreed to what is below. Stuff happens, but we do our best to limit it. What didn’t happen: 1) There was no rodent attacking the house; may have been overgrown tree branches, which get trimmed three times a year, maybe a bad dream. 2) The furniture is not older; cushions are replaced every four years to keep them like new, both on the living room and the outdoor furniture; 3) Seats are not broken; this is not even plausible. What did happen: 1) My Property Manager had a new coffeemaker to them within one hour, to the best of his recollection; guest praised him profusely for such service. 2) PM responded to their concern about ants, but they refused to have him do anything. "Not a problem." 3) The floors are quite nice—clean, plush carpet with a nice firm pad-- but if you have hip issues, the beds are commercial grade, in excellent condition, praised by other guests, and are better for extended sleeping than the floor. I apologize I cannot take this seriously; surely it is praise for the luxurious carpeting. What sometimes happens: 1) The lease states deposits required of new guests will be returned within 45 days. If you cannot tolerate that delay, let me know. We can make other arrangements. Deposits are returned in batches, coincident with receipt of monthly cable bills (since LD telephone is now free). Some receive their refund much sooner. How does this review help you? My property manager IS the best, and he will take care of your needs ASAP. Everything works in this home and is the best possible. If you want a home that is meticulously maintained, with flooring so nice you might be tempted :-) to sleep on it, this could be it. The reviewer liked the location and views. The neighborhood has high quality and spacious homes, some new, many established, and you won’t have new-construction contractors creating noise to ruin your relaxation time. If you want to see a possible deer in the yard at sundown, a fox on his path between homes, or other wildlife from the ships watch, only possible in spacious established neighborhoods, it will likely happen here. Verify this with other guest comments posted, due to space limitations here, on my personal website linked to from this listing. Further, I will double check these comments when we reopen to ensure nothing has been overlooked.

Fall getaway

  • 5 of 5

First trip to the Outer Banks, and it won't be our last. The Byrd Sanctuary offers a spacious, clean, beautifully decorated home suitable for couples or large family. The views are lovely especially from the ship's watch, a favorite spot for cocktails and sunsets. Short walk to the beach and many quaint shops and eateries a short drive away. . Not for the handicapped because of the many steps, but good exercize for the rest of us! One can easily buy some groceries and spend an entire week ( or two) here without even getting in your car. Loved it!!

Being situated between and with a view of the ocean and the Currituck Sound provides outstanding opportunities for a variety of water sports as well as beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Whether by bike, foot or car, you are just minutes from specialty shops and gourmet restaurants in the quaint village of Duck. The new Duck town park and amphitheater are complete and in full swing, with jazz festivals, theater performances and children's programs. Also, yoga-on-the-green, and other activities are scheduled throughout the week. Don't miss the new boardwalk, especially for sunset and nature strolls on the Currituck Sound.

Nearby are golf courses, indoor and outdoor racket sport facilities, health spas, miniature golf, and lighthouses of the Outer Banks. Safe bike trails now stretch over the entire length of the Outer Banks. Bike right from the home. You may also enjoy visiting the home of the Wright Brother's first flight, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the bird watching sites in sanctuaries used by winged migrants traversing the Atlantic flyway.
