Glen Ellen House Rental Photos and Description

House, 5 Bedrooms, 2.5+ Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Deer Hill is a classic, white clapboard, hilltop estate located two minutes from historic Glen Ellen and its restaurants, wineries, and gourmet market.

The house is a custom, two-story, New England-style farmhouse with high ceilings, tall windows, hardwood floors, and large slate-floored screen porch with brick hearth barbecue and rustic dining table. Large covered porches and open decks surround the house. Four bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs, sleeps up to ten guests.

The 26-acre grounds encompass extensive lawns, badminton court, and large porch-side reflecting pond. The 52-foot, gray-bottomed, swimming pool overlooking the valley is edged in large stone slabs and incorporates loveseats. A large deck with panoramic vistas and a six-person spa frame each end. The knee-deep reflecting pond is filtered and ideal for wading or lazy floating. Hiking trails on the grounds connect to friendly neighbors' trails.

Couples as well as families return to Deer Hill. In addition to deer, quail and diverse bird life are plentiful. Deer Hill is midway up the Valley of the Moon between Sonoma and Kenwood. After a day of hiking, biking, swimming, or shopping, a gentle afternoon Pacific Ocean breeze creates an ideal climate for pre-dinner contemplation on the covered octagonal porch, barbecue dinner on the screen porch overlooking the pond, and coffee around a fire in the porch's brick hearth.

Beyond expectation

  • 5 of 5
Our group of four women just spent an amazing three day get away at Deer Hill. The house and property were better than shown in the pictures. There is no way to capture the deer in the yard at dusk or the hot tub secluded at the end of the pool area with nothing around you but beauty. If there was any negative it was only that we wish we had brought our husbands and children as the setting is made for having family fun.

We loved the town of Glenn Ellen and had two amazing dinners in town. Would highly recommend Glen Ellen Star and the Fig Cafe. We also had a great lunch at the Glen Ellen Inn. The market is also great and you could easily cook all your meals in this well equipped kitchen. We did do our first dinner in as we just wanted to enjoy the setting.

We would love to return with our families in the future as this house is truly meant for kicking back and relaxing as a group.

Wonderful place for a group or large family

  • 5 of 5
Our mid-60's group of girlfriends since middle/high school spent our 10th annual long weekend "retreat" at Deer Hill. The house is spacious and well appointed (many interior walls were hung with beautiful quilts, some of them surely antiques), with a big, well-equipped kitchen that even the 8 of us cooking together couldn't overwhelm. The grounds are lovely; we played croquet and boules on the vast, rolling lawn, and never got around to using the pool or hot tub. It is clear that small children will enjoy the outdoor spaces, but should be supervised as there is a large (really large) shallow wading pond to play in as well as other play equipment. There are numerous furnished outdoor spaces for lounging, sipping wine, talking, relaxing. The location is very private, atop a hill above Glen Ellen, with an eagle's view of the surrounding rural countryside. The road/driveway is steep and winding but there is virtually no traffic. There are restaurants 5 minutes away in Glen Ellen, and a visit to the Wolf House in Jack London State Park (15 minutes away) is a must. This is a wonderful place that offers so much more than the photo suggests. Two of us checked it out before committing to renting -- the owner is very accommodating and gracious -- and were blown away.

Wonderful Experience

  • 5 of 5
All of us really enjoyed staying at Deer Hill. The home has a screened-in dining porch that looks over a lovely pond, and several other porches with comfortable loungers that look out onto a beautiful lawn that transitions into natural trees and vegetation, with wonderful views over the valley and, far away, the ocean. The swimming pool is built into the side of a hill so that you can see over the valley as you swim. It was so relaxing to recline in the lounge chairs and visit while looking out over the grounds and watching the deer that sauntered through.

The home is very gracious, comfortable and welcoming, with plenty of seating, a nice collection of quilts, and thoughtful touches like rolled up towels ready to grab as you head out for the pool.

We kept our scheduled wine tour, but cancelled eating out--we wanted to relax at Deer Hill as much as possible. We all agreed we want to return to Deer Hill next year.

Wonderful Wine Country Weekend!

  • 5 of 5
I cannot say enough about our fantastic stay in this exquisite property. We are 5 couples in our 50s and 60s and this home was ideal. We loved walking the grounds and swinging in the hammock. We had deer visitors each morning and even at night while we were in the hot tub. The patios were wonderful for morning coffee and the large porch table was perfect for our evening meals. We will definitely be returning next year!

Deer Hill

  • 5 of 5
Our group of 10 spent Labor Day weekend at Deer Hill. A mix of family and friends to celebrate a 30th birthday and a 30th wedding anniversary! We arrived just before dark after an exhausting day of travel...flight delay, 2hr car rental line and holiday traffic with the Oakland Bay bridge closed....but as we approached the top of the drive, spied the deer in the yard, viewed the grounds and the home, it all seemed worthwhile!! Everyone loved the location, the spaciousness , and the comforts of Deer Hill. We all ventured out during the day but could not wait to get back to sip wine, fire up the grill, and enjoy dinners together on the great screened-in porch! I have received thank you notes from everyone for finding this home and all want to know when we are going back! Nancy was quick to respond to my questions and everything was as described. I would highly recommend this to a group looking for a relaxing time in wine country!

Exceptional Hilltop Estate in Glen Ellen

  • 5 of 5
The Deer Hill property is aptly named - it is perched high atop a steep drive on a large multi-acre lot, and every day near sunrise/sunset there was a family of deer grazing in the yard!

The home consists of four bedrooms and two baths upstairs (the master suite is too big if there is such a thing) and a single bedroom and bathroom at the bottom of the stairs. The large eat-in kitchen is perfect for breakfast and lunch, and for dinner the indoor/outdoor dining room is ideal, complete with built in BBQ. This was my favorite spot, a sentiment clearly shared by others rendering the formal dining room expendable - now for table tennis! A multi-zone stereo system adds to the ambiance.

Outside, the grounds are gorgeous - the back porch opens onto an expansive manicured lawn, and a path leads you to the huge pool which sits atop a cliff facing southeast across the valley toward downtown Napa. The view is second to none and must be seen to be appreciated. There is a hot tub next to the pool, perfect for couples sipping wine under the stars in the cool night air. Below and alongside the path are fruit trees, and at the southern tip of the property is a badmington court and a walking trail. A large closet in the house has you covered for toys and sporting equipment.

The town of Glen Ellen is central to most of Sonoma wine country - you won't travel more than 45min to get to the outlier wine estates to the north (Healdsburg area recommended) but the vast majority are within a half hour drive, with a dozen less than 10min away. For the adventurous you can cut across Trinity Rd to Napa valley in about 30min as well, which makes this the ideal spot to explore all of wine country.

If you blink driving through town you will miss it, but everything you need can be found at the Glen Ellen Village Market, an upscale grocery store on Arnold drive less than a mile south of the property. There are also three good restaurants right at the cross of Warm Springs Rd and Arnold Drive at the bottom of the hill - walking distance...but for the vertical nature of the estate road on the return!

Nancy's property manager Chuy and his grounds staff are available should any problems or questions arise during your stay. For those looking for a sterile, ultra-modern house venture elsewhere - this is a gorgeous older home that is lived in, full of family history, personal touches and country charm.

I now have writer's remorse as we wanted to keep Deer Hill a secret...
