Live in Saratoga Springs NY with my wife Becky and two children. Love to travel and love PR.
Rocco Lamanna purchased this condo in 2005
PR is the best island in the Caribbean, the people are fantastic. It is great to have a place with so much history and adventure. It is not like a resort island where once you leave the gated complex you are stepping into a 3rd world country. PR is great, where in the world can you go to a tropical island, spend the morning by the Caribbean waters, go hiking in a rain forest then go to cold stone ice cream for dessert. It is the best of both worlds, modern conveniences with old world charm.
We really enjoyed our stay here. The view was amazing and the person we rented from, Rocco, was great. Found him on vrbo, condo 3E. We were on the third floor and the sound of the ocean and view were mesmerizing. The points others have made about the currents are true, so you wouldn't want to take kids swimming off this beach, but two beautiful swimming beaches are within a 5 minute drive, so that didn't really matter. The tradeoff of view was worth it. I loved being at the end of the developed portion of the beach. You could walk the quiet beach for miles right outside your door. And, unlike other condos that are across the street from the beach, this is actually ON the beach. We checked out the other large condo building in town (Playa Azul condos) and honestly I thought we picked right, in terms of scenery and location, if you value an amazing view. Yeah, the neighborhood was kind of sketchy, but I never felt unsafe. The whole town was kind of like that and the other big condo buildings were in the same kind of neighborhood. And really, I think it's more just not the kind of neighborhoods you're used to seeing in the US, rather than truly unsafe. Luquillo was a great base camp for doing everything on the east coast and had lots of great restaurants as well, if you didn't want to cook in your condo. Parking was in an assigned spot, so that was never a problem and the staff we encountered were great. I would definitely stay here again, without hesitation.
The apartment is right on the shore with a wonderful view and a great location for walking around town and on the beach. There are excellent restaurants just a few blocks away. The condo security is good and the neighborhood is home to very friendly people. We never felt unsafe. The owner was easy to deal with and was just a phonecall away. The apartment was OK for the price. Location, location, location. We would have gladly stayed longer and would recommend it to anyone unless they are hung up on luxury.
We had a great stay and would definitely stay again. The condo was clean and well-stocked with everything we needed during our stay. The view was wonderful and the beach was easy to access. The condo was in the perfect location to have a comfortable stay and see the sights of the island, with nearby grocery stores to stock the kitchen and easy access to the highway to get around.
This is a great property with breathtaking views. It is exactly like the pictures, very well kept. The location really couldn't get any better, just a couple minutes away from the famous Luquillo beach and the Luquillo kioskos. I definitely will be visiting again.
If you travel like a tourist - needing to be pampered, having someone immediately available for your every whim, bed made for you every day – this is not your spot. But if you really want to EXPERIENCE Puerto Rico in all its wonder, call Rocco ASAP! We booked a week+1 –- 4 days honeymoon, 4 days family vacation with the kids. It was AWESOME!!!
I want to see what the locals see, I want to eat where they eat, I want to do what they do. Sandy Hills offers exactly that and more. It has postcard perfect views, but it is incongruously dropped in a homey little neighborhood just off Hwy 3. Other reviews call it rundown or “bad” even, but apparently those people didn’t actually go out into the neighborhood. The people were so friendly! Everyone greeted us warmly as we strolled around and was very helpful, especially since my husband speaks no Spanish and mine is limited Mexican Spanish. If you don’t walk the neighborhood, you miss out on little gems like Ernestina’s chuletas, William’s chorizo pizza and Aroma’s crepes. They were all great, but the best food we had, hands down, was from the neighbor’s stand on the corner right outside the security gate. OMG!! Home cooking at its best!
Having a full kitchen in the condo was a godsend. We bought fresh fish in Ceiba (30min east) and veggies at the market, as well as breakfast food to keep on hand. By not buying food out every meal, we saved a ton of money and calories. The food is amazing, but so rich and fried… And vegetables are scarce!
The only drawback: Thunderstorms + No Window Screens = 30 mosquito bites for me. The heavy wind through the living room kept us safe there, but the kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms were warzones! It was too stuffy to close the windows, but AC’s give me and my daughter headaches. We bought Off! spray and portable fan, as well as citronella bracelets, to no avail. It wasn’t until we got the Raid Coils did we really see a difference.
Thank you, Rocco, for choosing such a perfect spot to have a vacation rental! And thank you for allowing us the opportunity to truly enjoy the real Puerto Rico!!
This condo has a great view but has terrible accommodations. With a very uncomfortable bed, broken drawers, lack of towels and wash clothes it leaves more than a little comfort to be desired. Unless you are a college student with low comfort sleeping standards, I recommend looking elsewhere.
The stay was wonderful. The balcony is perfect and really is the opportunity to take in the beauty of the island beach. Little trick: When the front door and sliding door are open at the same time the breeze is amazing.
The apartment is quaint, clean, and the fully equipped kitchen is a benefit when traveling with a family. We cooked a full breakfast every morning before heading out. Tip: Follow Rocco's direction to get to the location. The drive to San Juan for water activities is about 20-25 min. The rain forest is about 15 min.
away. For a mini grocery trip there is a Wal-Mart which is about 10 min up the road.
What was important for me: Good communication with the owner, WIFI, safe/clean place to stay, and a local store for items that are not necessary to cram in a luggage.
Each of my of concerns were met. Rocco was truly a text away. That is a peace of mind when traveling in general. Thank you Rocco.
