GREAT!

  • 5 of 5

I rented this house for Memorial day weekend with 6 friends and we could not have had a better time! The house was amazing and did not disappoint. The pictures and description were completely accurate and the owner was extremely helpful, accomodating and could not have made the process any easier. The ammenities this property provided really made this an amazing experience--we thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub, sauna, cold plunge, pool table, ping pong table, BBQ and large screen TV. We would definitely rent this house again and were sad to have to leave.

Fun House, Needs Tinkering

  • 3 of 5

My guests and I enjoyed our stay at Rick's Zen House, mainly because we're a fun, easy-going group; but there were kinks. We appreciated the one of a kind amenities the place has to offer, but I have to be honest and say a LOT of our stay required a DIY spirit and reaching out to the owner to have questions answered and get things working properly.

The Good: Where else can you have a private place equipped with an awesome movie theater, pool table, and bath house hooked up with a good speaker system? Kudos to Rick for creating the space.

The Not So Good: Maintenance was lacking and communication with the owner was inconsistent. Sometimes emails were answered within minutes, but then the week before our stay it was radio silence. With zero check-in instructions up until the day of arrival, I had to contact Homeway worried that we wouldn't be able to follow through with our reservation. I was so relieved when an email with 'URGENT' in the subject matter a few hours before we were scheduled to leave NYC was answered.

The inside of the house was clean, but the outside decks were littered with cigarette buds and garbage from previous guests when we arrived. One major thing was thing was that the Queen size pull out couch in the living room was completely broken, the metal frame was cracked. Because we had a full house- my friend had to sleep on the floor with the pullout mattress. I was really disappointed by this.

The shower and tub in the bath house did not work at all, but the sauna was a gem. The outdoor hot tub needed to be topped off, which took some work, and there were no supplies to test the pH of the water (I was reassured it was recently cleaned, but still, peace of mind). The temperature display on the hot tub was also completely faded, not a big deal but it also did take a few hours to heat up. In general- updated instructions for the current state of the house would have been helpful.

Also, you have to bring your own linens. Lots of lightbulbs needed to be changed. Every single one of the TV remotes was missing all batteries and their backs to hold them in -- we had to go out and buy some. And most of the DVD collection is missing as well, I guess previous guests stole them because it was most cases were empty.

At the end of the day, the house feels like a really cool pet project that the owner is just too busy to keep up with. With some TLC, it could be a dream!

Not A Zen Experience

  • 1 of 5

To all who are interested in this rental I would advise to look elsewhere. What began as 11 friends looking for a "Zen Experience" soon became a subpar experience with an even worse property owner. From the beginning things were a hassle as we never received any introduction emails or welcome info packet at the property. We had to call or text the owner every time something came up which is the exact opposite to what a "Zen" house is suppose to offer. Even worse, two weeks after our trip I was still dealing with the rental which I will get to later.

As for the house, it was fine; not amazing and definitely not Zen. It was tidy enough, though overall it felt off. Probably because the roof in the billiards room was unfinished, the track lighting didn't work, the TV and speakers were not hooked up, and the heat was lacking, among other things. These were not major deal breakers, but it did start to rub us the wrong way.

The best part came when I tried to get my refundable damage deposit back. A few days after our trip, I emailed Rick about the refund and he said it would take a few days to process. Sounds good. A week passed with no updates so I called HomeAway and learned that no refund had been processed. They sent an email to Rick saying that I was complaining and 10 minutes later I received a rude text from him asking why I needed to call HomeAway and that like he said it would day a few days. Another week went by hearing nothing so I texted Rick asking where my refund was. No response. I texted the next day. No response. I called HomeAway again, went through the complaint process again and this time 10 minutes later I get a text from Rick simply saying “Done” and an email saying my refund my processed. Pretty absurd that I had to pressure a property owner, who has been doing this since 2006, to issue a refund that is clearly as simple as pressing the refund button on the website. Despite whatever excuse Rick might give, it seemed to me as if he hoped I would forget about the deposit so he could go on touting how totally Zen this house is.

Overall, we realized that this was not a place where we would be leaving our day-to-day troubles behind. We eventually made the best of it; making food, playing board games, and enjoying ourselves, but we could have done that anywhere which is why I would suggest looking at another property if you really want a Zen Experience in the Catskills.

Ok house, terrible owner

  • 1 of 5

Upon arriving out the house, we were greeted with the back door being left open, making our first few moments there a search for any animals that might have wandered into such an inviting house. Next we did a quick check of the house and noticed several broken items which we notified the owner of immedietally. The deck however in back had us a bit worried as one of the boards was popping up, then checked the hottub which we found to jot have been filled, and again contacted the owner who was not too much of a help in finding the way to turn the hose on to do so, but we figured it out after searching downstairs. We all got to experience the movie theatre a bit while waiting for the tub to fill, and the movie theatre was good to be honest. However, that does not make up for the fact of how bad the owner is, or how he stole my groups security deposit.

To make things clear, my group stayed there at the end of the September of last year. This negative review is only coming up now as we were advised by Home Away to allow the owner at least 60 days to refund the security deposit, which clearly he never has. After trying to contact hin several more times throughout December, to no avail, I am left with the impression the owner had never even had planned out refunding this security deposit to begin with. The 6 weeks leading up to my reservation date I tried getting in contact with him several times as he received all our money for the reservation however never gave me the passcode to get into the house. It was only after contacting Home Away and having them reach out to him did he ever respond. I was hoping Home Away would have the same luck regarding this security deposit, however they informed me they had attempted to contact him several times and they too were ignored. They also advised me that if for some reason something got damaged and the security deposit was to be taken, the owner would have told them so. Again this was not the case, as not only did we leave the place cleaner than when we arrived, but Home Away wasnever notified by the owner. One would imagine how upsetting it is to be ignored when a resolution is trying to be reached, but it is only made worse by the fact this man still has money that does not belong to him. I would highly advise against anyone from renting this property, and if you have already, to cancel the reservation, unless you feel comfortable risking the owner stealing your security deposit as well.

Awesome Place

  • 5 of 5

Went up here with a group of friends for Thanskgiving and had a fantastic time. The area is lovely and the house has everything. Really enjoyed the hot tub and the movie theater. The sauna is great as well. I would definitely recommend the Zen House to anyone heading up with a big group.
