Our cute studio apartment at the wonderful Papakea Resort is right on the ocean, a mere 30 feet to the water from your lanai. It's in the 'A' building at Papakea in the perfect situation, - close to parking, super close to the beach, the pool, not on the ground floor so more private, far away from the elevator, and up just one flight of stairs, so easy and convenient. We think 'A' is the best - the perfect combination of a direct ocean front condo in a very desirable resort.
Our studio apartment has an easy-to-use queen size murphy bed to allow for more living space during the day, an A/C to take the edge off on hot days, a full kitchen, and a bath with separate vanity and bath/toilet areas. There is dining for 2 inside and outside on the lanai. There are 2 chaise lounges on the lanai as well for relaxing and whale watching. There is free WiFi highspeed Internet in the apartment. All this for a great price!
Papakea Resort itself offers wonderful amenities: 2 pools, 2 spas, a sauna, and beach access with easy swimming and snorkeling on site. Many of my guests enjoy the water aerobics classes held every M, W, F in the pool as well as beach front yoga classes too. Others enjoy tennis, shuffleboard, or honing their skills on one of the 2 18-hole manicured putting greens.
Now there is free high-speed wireless Internet access in every room! The grounds are very handsome, where bamboo groves and tropical plants and flowers abound, where wonderful walkways meander through extensive koi ponds featuring the soothing sounds of waterfalls and water fountains. Everything they offer is free for you to enjoy, so kick back and enjoy it while you’re there!
West Maui really does have it all - great beaches, world-class golfing, wonderful eating options from the best take out on the island to Tiger Woods most favorite restaurant on Maui. There is excellent original theatre and Hawaiian Slack Key performances available year-round. Lahaina town is very historic, with excellent and informative historical walking tours of both Lahaina and Kaanapali. Whale season starts in December and runs through April. Come see our over 3,400 humpback whales that migrate through the channels of Maui annually.
There is something to be said for watching a Bears game while sitting on a lanai less than 30 feet from the ocean…
Papakea A-203 allowed us to do this! This ideally located condo has everything a vacationing couple could ask for. Jan has a studio unit that is located in the best part of a beautifully manicured condo complex that puts you close to everything happening in and around West Maui.
We were first-time visitors to Maui, and first-time users of a vacation condo. It won’t be the last. Every picture we saw online was true to life. The bed was comfortable and easy to use, as advertised. Every description about what was in the condo was accurate, with plenty of stock household items available until you have time to get across to Times Market. The WiFi works well, we were able to use an iPad to call up our home TV over the Internet to watch the game live, and to Skype the grandkids.
Booking this little slice of heaven was as gentle as the light Kona winds that were blowing throughout our stay. Jan provides very detailed information up front about how things work at Papakea, as well as a Maui to-do list which assisted with our trip planning.
We were able to do all of the first-time-to-Maui stuff like Haleakala, the Road to Hana, the Four Winds II to Molokini, UFO Parasailing, and a luau. Mama’s Fish House provided a meal that holds memories for a lifetime. We also had plenty of time to just relax, going up and down the West coast to the beaches.
I have to mention Fish Market Maui, across the Lower Road, where they have the best Fish Sandwich on the planet. It is NOT a Filet-O-Fish! The fresh herbed bun and carmelized sweet Maui onions would be good BEFORE adding the grilled to perfection Ono. We ate there 3 out of 7 days. I love arroz, and who would have thought that I would find the best prepared arroz at Ohana Tacos? Moist, yet light and fluffy.
The things that cannot be related in a review note are the intense colors and dramatic changes in a sunset. Or, the majestic roar of the rolling waves as they hit the reef before they finish the journey to the sea wall. Both of which every reader of this will experience if they decide to take our advice and find a way to experience Maui as soon as they can, and as often as they can. Experience it in style and comfort at Papakea, with Jan’s superb hosting.
We just returned from our Maui vacation in October 2007 and absolutely loved our accommodations at Papakea (#A203)! The view was magnificent and the condo was very comfortable, including the Murphy bed. Every morning we'd wake up to the sound of the ocean and every night we'd fall asleep to it. We've stayed in several other Papakea condos over the years and this one was our favorite.
We were here a couple of weeks ago and I'll start out this review by saying this: The Murphy bed was awesome! I mean really, really awesome! It was more comfortable than mine at home, and I'm a mattress snob! So, if that is what is concerning you- don't let it. It was a non-issue!! (And you won't have to make the bed every morning! Just push it back into the wall! That's a plus!) We loved this unit- everythig about it. Jan has not misrepresented it in any way. The location is perfect for first time visitors to Maui. We had great restaurants close by and walked to many of them. I wish I had remembered Jan's comments about the snorkel gear folks. We went to Boss Frogs, and sure enough, it was a "soft sell" for timeshares. Don't bother. There's a better one directly across from the building and the prices are the same. Use them. We did use Jan's advice and call Andres with Barefoot for our luau tickets. He was awesome! If we had thought of it, we would have asked him about snorkel gear, too. Whatever activities you chose to do, call him. He is not a pressure salesman- he only wants to direct you to the best fit for YOU. I can't recommend him enough. The 10 days we spent here were heavenly. Jan goes out of her way to give you tips and advice. Take it- she knows her stuff!!! It was quiet, close to everything, and comfortable. Clean, clean, clean!!! You'll not regret it and I promise you will have the trip of a lifetime!!!
Jan's condo is one of the best values for oceanfront property that we have found. The condo is very comfortable (even surprisingly the murphy bed) and clean. There were many extras like beach chairs, coolers, boogie boards and books. We love the location of the Papakea. You can walk to farmer's market, grocery store, fish market and more.
We have stayed in this 2nd-floor, ocean-front condo in 2011, 2012, and have reserved for Jan., 2012. We highly recommend it! Papakea Condo Resort is great, with 2 pools and hot-tubs, 2 putting greens, and spacious grounds which are very well kept-up, with lovely flowers and fish-ponds. It is also "old-style" Hawaii, in that there are several buildings well-separated, and only four floors.
From a message to Jan., the very helpful and nice owner, after our latest visit:
"1.) Thanks for getting a coffee grinder: I brought a bag of my favorite French Roast beans, and having a nice, strong cup of coffee every morning on the lanai was great!
2.) As wine drinkers, we have done comparison shopping locally over the years, and the best prices are at Safeway(with their discount card, and especially the extra 10% off for a six-pack.) But there are often specials at ABC and Times.
3.) Best place to buy flowers--at the farmer's market 2 bloocks up the street, but they are there only Wed. and Fri. mornings. This time we got a fantastic bouquet for only $15!
4.) Take out food within walking distance; We really love the great Okazuya Take-out in the strip mall a block up the street: Sharing their Ono Lemon Caper Saute with fries ($18) with a nice crisp bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon blance on the lanai with the fantastic view overlooking the sea is equivalent to a meal at, say, Pacific'O's, but at about 1/3 the cost! Also, the ABC store next door has up-graded, and the sandwiches and salads from their fresh deli section are very good, but inexpensive.
5.) We ususally have an evening flight out, so our routine on the last day is to have lunch at Hallimalle General Store (truly a world-class place), then spending time in Makaweo and Paia. We finally grab a cheap bit to eat, usually in Charley''s Bar, which has a free parking lot (a good thing these days in Paia!), then fill up the car with gss, and head to the ariport. Another "extra" day of fun!
6. Local restaurants we liked this year: Pacific'O, Mala, and their new restaurant Honu next door with fantastic sea-side tables, Fu Lin across the street for Chinese food--doesn't look like much, but the food is great!. Roy's up the road--truly word-class as well; we usually make a meal of the fabulous pupus and finish with the chocolate souffle (order at the beginning of the meal).
Thanks, and again, we love this little condo! Hope to come back forever and ever...
Bill and Julie
My husband and I loved our stay in this exceptionally clean and well equipped unit. The murphy bed was very comfortable and it was so nice to be lulled to sleep each night by the waves gently lapping the shore! This is our fourth stay at Papakea and we will definitely contact Jan the next time we visit. She was a pleasure to deal with both the booking of the condo and the prompt return of our security deposit.
This is a wonderful unit-enjoy!!!!!!
In case you haven't heard, the Papakea Resort is a very gracious low-rise, low-density tropical resort set on 13 oceanfront acres. It is right across the street from and easy walking distance to grocery stores, farmer's markets, great shopping and dining, DVD rentals and a great coffee shop.
Our studio apt. really has everything you need, no matter whether you stay a week or a month! There is an en suite washer/dryer, a dishwasher, all the kitchen gear and lots of great paperbacks to browse. The sunsets from your lanai are fabulous as are the views of the islands of Molokai and Lanai. Watch turtles grazing on the reef while you enjoy a quiet tropical sunset. Or watch whales frolicking right in front of your lanai! I know you will love the comfort and the value pricing afforded by our wonderful direct oceanfront studio apartment in the amenity rich resort that we all know and love - Papakea!
Other Activities: Whale watching
