A perfect base for exploring Normandy

  • 5 of 5
We decided on a short drive and stay in Normandy this year having limited time, and having driven through the region so many times! We deliberately chose a traditional style of house to give our stay some context, and we were not disappointed. The house is exactly as it is described; beautifully decorated and maintained and it could not have been more thoughtfully equipped. The owners were extremely helpful when we had problems with the wifi, which was a real bonus if you have to keep in touch with work (!) in such a beautiful rural setting. We have 3 children, 2 of them teenage boys, and they all found things to do. The grassy area provided excellent scope for football practice, the local area is great for keen runners and the kitchen was a dream for a cake- baking mother and daughter on a grey day! The bedrooms were a particular favourite as they are spacious and very comfortable, providing plenty of room for all of us. In fact the house is very large - we didn't really use half of the ground floor as the small sitting room and kitchen were so comfortable. We had decided on a sight-seeing holiday, and managed to pack in trips to Paris, Deauville, Honfleur, local markets, Bec Hellouin Abbey and Rouen which is fabulous if you are looking for bookshops, clothes shops and restaurants, which we were. We didn't find time for the Landing Beaches or Bayeux so will have to come again! We all agreed this was the best house we had stayed in, and that Normandy is a seriously underrated part of France. We were very lucky with the weather, but I think it would still be lovely even in the rain!

Absolutely Fabulous holiday!`

  • 5 of 5
An absolutely beautiful and well maintained cottage (a lot bigger and spacious than it looks) situated in a stunning location overlooking the valley and NOT overlooked even by the neighbours who are situated slightly elevated to the back of the house. We had a lovely welcome when we picked up the keys. The whole house was immaculately clean, the kitchen extremely well equipped for absolutely every type of cooking you choose to do. Its not just the kitchen that is well equipped, everything seems to have been thought about and we had everything we needed. W have been on many holidays and can honestly say this was the most relaxing holiday we have had, as the house is so homely and lends itself to doing so. We have already recommended it to friends and family. Me and my partner were after a relaxing holiday, therefore chose not to venture out for activities other than for little walks around the tiny little village and a couple of drives out for supplies to the near by Brionne and St Georges du Vivre. The weather was kind and therefore sitting outside in the garden was a lovely way to watch the world go by. It really was a fabulous holiday and we wish we were still there. Would love to go again! We thoroughly recommend a trip to this beautiful place.

Excellent quiet hide-away

  • 4 of 5
This house in St. Gregoire provided us with an excellent holiday. The party consisted of one family with a toddler and a baby and granddad staying for a few days. I think with 2 families with children it would be more difficult, as three of the bedrooms are in a row, requiring the adults to go through the children's room to get to their own. But then you can always put the children in the double bed at the end as well. The house had everything we needed, and we loved the quiet location and excellent view of the Risle valley. St. Gregoire formed an oasis of rest compared to the busy cote de Fleurie. Locally you can walk and cycle and the coast is only a 40 minute drive away. We visited 5 different beaches over the 2 weeks and liked all of them. The Parc des Loisirs in Brionne is also a good option closer by, with a lake, beach, playground and peddle boats. Apart from this park we found playgrounds locally in short supply, though a drive of say one hour wil get you to Tolys Land or Honfleur, which has an excellent playground. The house is spacious and comfortable, but not specifically aimed at (young) children. For instance, there were no plastic plates or cups when we stayed there. The stair can also pose a problem, as it is a wooden one and quite slippery (for a child in socks). But with a television and dvd player and a wooden train set in a box our 3-year old was quite satisfied. In all, we had a lovely time and I would recommend this house to anyone looking for a quiet location in the real French countryside.

Lovely House

  • 5 of 5
This a lovely house with beautiful furniture and furnishings .The owners have clearly gone to a lot of trouble to make the house pleasant and comfortable.
The rooms are all decorated beautifully and the equipment.particularly in the kitchen and utility room, first -class..
I would have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending this house.

Our Stay(s)

  • 5 of 5
Our stay was wonderful. The cottage is very pretty, clean and spacious but with charm and a cosy snug for chilly nights which we made a lot of use of!
The area has plenty of walks in the most beautiful Normandy countryside all open to explore at your leisure. We often walked an entire afternoon meeting few people but soaking up the wildlife and fresh air. The perfect tonic for 21st century life.
The coast is within easy driving distance. Arramanches kept the children engaged and educated! Sandy beaches for a good walk and sand castles after completed the trip.
Paris is within striking distance for those who want a little bit of urban life and culture.
The locals are friendly and helpful. Cafes and restaurants provide excellent food at reasonable prices. The local towns can provide all your shopping needs very reasonably.
All in all, an excellent holiday destination – so much so we have been twice!

St Grégoire is about 4kms from St Georges du Vievre which has all the essential shops. It is about 12kms from Brionne and Pont Audemer, both of which have colourful twice weekly street markets and large supermarkets.

Le Havre is about an hour and Calais between 2.5 and 3 hrs; Honfleur, Deauville, Rouen and Lisieux are all between about 45mins and an hour away; Paris is about 1.5hrs, by car, and about the same by train from Bernay. Bayeux with its tapestry is worth a visit.

There is an indoor pool in Pont Audemer and in summer an outdoor one in St Georges; and a lake with a sandy beach in Brionne. The Normandy beaches are within 1hr, and Golf, tennis, sailing, canoeing and riding are all close by.

There are many châteaux, gardens, etc in the area; the monastery at Bec Hellouin, Champ de Bataille and Monet's Giverny are all within easy reach. We love the many miles of wonderful forest walks, which are especially beautiful in the spring and autumn.
