What a perfect place to begin our Hawaii vacation. We only wish we could stay longer. This is a tranquil and magical spot. We had a great day at the Green Sand beach - path along the ocean is the best way to walk - and loved our quiet home cooked meals in our lovely cottage. Mahalo -
Boy made us very welcome, which is always appreciated. The little cottage was so cute and cosy with its own little lanai in the rainforest with wonderful birdlife to watch over a coffee. Unfortunately we never had time to make use of the hot tub but it was nice that robes were provided for our use. The location to the National Park was excellent and the caldera is definitely worth a night visit, especially as it is only a short distance away. The drive to the tidepools and thermal pool on the far side of Pahoa for snorkelling is well worth it. The local village store was amazingly well stocked and well worth a visit. We like to support the surrounding businesses if we can. We had a great stay and it remained sunny the whole time. We would thoroughly recommend Boy & Debra's Place and should we ever be lucky enough to come to Hawaii again visiting our son we will definitely chose to stay in this rainforest hideaway again. Lovely!
We loved our time at R&Ds place. It was exactly as advertised, except that the oven didnt work. Everything else was splendid, especially the hot tub we enjoyed each evening, as it does get chilly up there...~50s at night.
Ron and Debra were very pleasant and helpful in sorting out what to do while there. The budda-nature of the grounds gave it a very peaceful feeling. Down a long tree covered lane its a bit tricky to find, but very much worth it. We would stay there again.
I actually stayed here longer than a year ago, and we're looking at heading back that way for another vacation and I HAD to locate this listing to check the availability! I came with a friend who was stationed at Kaneohe Bay on Oahu and we had such an amazing time. The pictures of this place simply do NOT do it justice... the gardens are amazing. I have an image of a small rock that I found in one of Debra's flowerbeds that said "Namaste" that I have hanging in my bedroom still. :) The artwork is just an added touch and things like the towel heaters in the bathroom are touches you simply would not get in a commercial room! We loved it and I can't wait to bring my boyfriend to enjoy it with me!
We spent 4 nights in the cottage and found it to be very nice and relaxing. Tucked under the Hapu'u tree ferns and Ohi'a a lehua trees, the morning was alive with birds -- mostly 'Apapane twittering and whirring in the sky. This is a great "base camp" for exploring Volcanoes National Park. Coming back from a night time visit to Pele at Kilauea (a must do) and sitting in the hot tub under the tree ferns and a full moon was mystical. The hosts are very nice - welcoming and helpful but unobtrusive. They have festooned the grounds with "art-y-facts" that are fun to discover. Nice touches such as warm bathrobes for the hot tub, a heated towel rack and an eclectic music collection by the cd player. No TV (a plus) but an excellent wireless connection if you must stay in the real world.
The cottage is small but well-appointed -- the gas fireplace and electric blanket were very welcome on 40* nights. If you plan to do your own cooking, rather than trying the excellent restaurants in the area, keep it simple. The fridge space is limited and the stove top is small.
We plan to return next year, maybe for the Merrie Monarch Festival.
We stayed 5 nights (May 7-11) at this cute, adorable and comfortable accommodation amidst ferns that grow higher than the cottage itself. The hosts were very gracious, interesting, artistic and delightful people. Debra is a very talented artist who had an art show in Downtown Hilo, which was fun to visit. This is in a great central location to the Volcanoes National Park, Hilo and the Puna Coast area. The hot tub was an added bonus. We ate 3 dinners at the excellent Kiawe Kitchen nearby, and one good dinner at the Lava Rock Cafe.
We only stayed for three nights but what a great time we had, Your hospitality was very welcomed after our recent stay in the busy resort area of Kona town. The native birds sing all day and the nights are quiet and peaceful. We will try to come back and will recommend Boy and Debra's Place to all our friends coming to Volcano. As they say in Hawaii...Mahalo Nui Loa for a great time....hottub was wonderful!!
