Beautiful house in the Woods

mcneill / feige Newburyport, MA
Review Submitted: February 5, 2009 Date of Stay: January 2009
We thoroughly enjoyed our long weekend stay at Casi di Sassi at the end of January. Unfortunately the weather was freezing which made skiing tough but we stayed warm and cozy inside the house with those two beautiful wood stoves... The stone house is gorgeous and the property is beautiful with breathtaking views on a clear day. The master bed is very comfortable and the room is spacious. We did have to sleep with the bedrooms doors open each night because it is hard to heat upstairs at times but that was fine.
One thing to note is that the only TV is a small TV in the mater bedroom. At first we were really disappointed that there was no TV on the first floor but we ended up having a great time listening to good music and playing board games instead. The sound system was great in that it played throughout the whole house but the system is pretty dated and we did have trouble getting the CD player to work. Luckily we figured out how to hook up an Ipod instead.
The bathrooms are fine and in good enough condition with good water pressure and hot water supply. The water does smell like sulfur but apparently there is not much you can do about that.
We used the kitchen to cook several meals and found all the necessary pots and pans without trouble (note that there is no cheese grater). We also enjoyed outings to The Shed and The Alchemist breweries. Good food and Great Beer!
Overall we loved our stay at the Stone House and we would definitely return next year!

A Wonderful Retreat

swh1006 Chatham, NJ
Review Submitted: September 9, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
We loved our stay! It was just as it was described...a private retreat. The views are spectacular, especially the stars at night. We loved walking the trails and my kids picked blackberries and blueberries along the way. We went to Stowe and rode the alpine slide and bungee jump. Went to the top of the mountain for lunch on the gondola. We are all looking forward to a return trip.

Our stay at the Magical House

pmjm Burnsville, NC, USA
Review Submitted: February 13, 2008 Date of Stay: October 2007
This is a very unique home in a beautiful area of beautiful VT. It's close enough to Stowe to enjoy the amenities there but far enough from town to have privacy and peace. The grounds are rural but lovely with large apple trees, deer feeding early and late and many songbirds.

The home has thick stone walls, whole tree trunks supporting the ceiling and the second floor and an almost 2' thick back door that is an engineering feat. It's quite dark inside due to those walls and because it doesn't have many windows. All bedrooms are upstairs and there are steep steps which would make it unsuitable for those who cannot climb stairs or who have small children who could tumble down the stairs.

The bed where we slept was comfortable. Bathroom was okay. The kitchen was well equipped. The water at the house has a sulphur smell but the owner said it's tested regularly and safe to drink.

When we stayed the upholstered furnishings needed cleaning or replacement but the owner (who is very nice) has since said this was done. There was not enough lighting for reading at night but he said this has also been upgraded.

There is a small TV on the wall upstairs but none downstairs so if having a TV is important this would be a problem.

We loved Stowe. You can walk all around the town. There are 4-way stop signs instead of traffic lights and people actually take turns. Pedestrians have the right of way and cars must stop to let you cross the street. Many restaurants and shops. We ate at McCarthy's for breakfast several times and the food was good with reasonable prices. Had a great pizza at Pie in the Sky. Had a really nice lunch at Harrison's where the decor was elegant, food good and prices affordable. Went in lots of little shops with touristy items and great smells.

We toured Ben and Jerry's ice cream factory and had a yummy sample. Toured Cold Hollow Cider Mill and had their cider and doughnuts more than once! Went down to Green Mountain Coffee Roasters and the Train Depot in Waterbury where we had good coffee. There were many other places we wanted to see but we just ran out of time.

I don't know if we'll stay at this house again but we will definitely return to Stowe.
