At time of booking the listing described the property as:
2 living rooms with cable in each–no cable, listing has been revised on-line
Pictures on-line show carpeting in 2 of the rooms that do not have carpeting, 1 has water damage at the base of the walls
Listed 6 garden chairs–1 beach chair & 1 rocking chair
Dining room listed as seating for 6–only 4 chairs provided
“Loft” is a raised bed next to a stairwell
Owner indicated ac was not needed because of cool breeze off the lake, there is only 1 window w/screens that face the lake, so the breeze doesn’t come in the house, remaining windows & doors that face the lake have no screens
Contract & listing had stated check in time at 2pm, were told a week before it had been changed to 4pm.
House was not fully cleaned. Neither shower had been touched, still a facecloth from the previous renter & other personal items in both. Food/beer had been left behind & a spill in the fridge had crusted over, also dog feces all over the yard. I e-mailed the owner & then spent our 1st night/morning cleaning the house. The couches had built up filth, found chewed gum in one. Kids slept in a tent outside.
Washer broke & flooded 2 rooms. Owners solution was for us to drive 30 minutes each way to pick up a shop vac. Instead we purchased what we needed to remedy the situation. My husband then had to fix the washer on his own. No follow up was provided. I slept in my car because of the flood & left 2 days early.
We are unsatisfied with the owner’s response. Now describing his “stunning lake front home” as “rustic” he informed me my expectations were too high. Cleanliness & functional appliances apparently included. Admitting his cleaning service is sometimes inadequate, he disputed it was “as bad” as we described. He indicated the service found no traces of our complaints when they returned to the house after we left. We had already cleaned everything so they didn’t find the items in question. We offered the pictures I had taken of the mess, but he declined. We were then blamed for the washer & accused of causing the problem. We were abashed. We had fixed his appliance & mitigated damage to his house. He offered a refund equal to approx. 1 night for the cleaning issue only, directing us to pursue compensation through insurance. Had we not been as proactive as we were there would have been more damaged caused to the house then the amount he is refunding. He remains unmoved.
