Roomy, but nothing special

Date of Stay: November 2008
My husband and I, along with 9 friends, rented both sides of this duplex for 2 nights over Thanksgiving. We were happy with the amount of space, as everyone got their own bedroom. We were allowed to bring our dogs along without an additional deposit, which is very rare.
During our stay we had the following issues:
*The two sides of the duplex are not internally connected. Traveling outside between the two sides was a big hassle.
*The fireplace on one side did not work, despite an hour or two trying to fix it.
*The lack of supplies: we had to share 1 sponge between the two sides and 1 side ran out of toilet paper.
*The ovens were tiny, which made cooking Thanksgiving dinner difficult.
*The knives in the block were extremely rusted and not usable. Good thing we brought our own.
*The checkout policy required us to strip all sheets and start laundry (even though we paid a cleaning fee). I have never come across this, and we have rented many vacation homes throughout the years.
Owner's Response: I do appreciate this feedback. I made it clear to these renters that the home had NOT been fall cleaned yet and that it might not be 'ready' and fully stocked. They wanted to book the home anyway. It was a last minute rental. I only charged them 50% of the cleaning fee. I live locally and would have been right over to help with the fireplace if they had called and let me know there was a problem. This is an older home and the price reflects that. Many owners appreciate help with checking out. People are often asked to strip the beds. The cleaning staff REALLY appreciates this and I thank people, in advance, for helping with this.
