Kapoho House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

JUST REMODELED (9/2014), This sweet one bedroom bungalow sits right on the shoreline where you can walk into the calm cove and snorkel, swim or kayak. Sea turtles frequently come into this cove and don't mind a curious snorkeler or two (sea turtles are a protected species here). This is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the ocean, palm trees and trade winds in the afternoon.

Over the last 23 years, many vacationers have enjoyed this quaint water front cottage. The covered lanai has plenty of seating for lounging or dining and staring at the turquoise waters of Kapoho Bay. A gas and a charcoal barbeque grill are provided. You enter the property through a large bamboo gate onto a level grassy lawn surrounded by lava rock walls and coconut palms.

The open living room, dining area and kitchen have ocean views and there's a full kitchen with breakfast bar. The granite counter tops blend well with the native mango cabinet fronts. The bedroom has a king bed with custom mango end tables and lamps. A fold out sofa bed in the living room offers additional sleeping space. Can sleep up to 4 guests total. (2 adults plus 2 kids, or 3 adults).

The remodeled bathroom has a large walk in tiled shower, plus a beautiful modern glass sink atop the granite counter.

Satellite TV and internet provided. Ceiling fans cool the air in each room. An indoor laundry room has a washer and dryer. And now, two kayaks are provided - life vests must be worn.

The oceanfront bungalow is situated in the gated community of Kapoho Beach Lots, close to Champagne Pond, the tidepools, Pohoiki Bay and the lava flow viewing site. About 50 minutes drives to Volcano National Park. 35 miles to Hilo and 12 miles to Pahoa Village.

Note: there is intermittent construction going on at the property next door.

Keywords: Sweet, private, one bedroom bungalow right next to the water, Hawaii, Big Island, cove, bay

Your Own Piece of Paradise

  • 5 of 5
Some places are just so special and magical that my tendency is not to share the place with others for fear it will not be available again when my husband and I want to visit! The drive to the bungalow was incredible, in and of itself. Beauty, nature, wild, raw, open, sweet smelling, awe inspiring are just a few words that explain just the excursion to this special destination. When we arrived we regarded the house number on a solid tropical wooden gate (it seemed majestic to us), stopped the car , looked at each other and said ‘this CAN’T be the place !?” I told my husband to use the clicker and the solid wood gate slowly opened up, welcoming us to our home for the next week. We drove well onto the property and next to the house then the gate slowly closed behind us.
Wow! Having stepped out of the car we looked upon expansive lush lawns, gardens and blooming plumerias. The bungalow looked just like the pictures! So far we were impressed and equally so at sight of the sparkling cove in front of us, beckoning us to just jump in, right then and there! Instead, we went inside and found a spacious great room with lots of windows, beautiful hard wood furnishings and tropical décor. We just couldn’t help but keep pinching ourselves as we opened up all the doors and windows to let the fresh sea air and tradewinds fill the rooms. We noticed the bathroom, tastefully done with a murano glass bowl sink and roomy tiled shower full of natural light. The bungalow had everything we needed (we stocked up at Safeway in Hilo before coming to our destination) to make this our temporary home. My husband and I slept like babies on the generous king bed and we were well rested each morning. The first night the Coqui frogs were many and prevalent but they apparently cleared out once they understood we were there. Subsequent nights we looked forward to the sound of only a few Coquis lulling us to sleep, along with the lapping waves against the cove. Comfy living room, comfy counter stools and large counters…loved being able to just sit inside or out and gaze upon the surf in the bay beyond the cove. We sipped coffee and cocktails at the lanai table every morning and evening. Nice to be able to sit outside under the covered lanai while it rained and also provided ample shade during hot days. There were lots of tropical fish in the cove, which could be seen by just sitting on the wall. We took dips each night with a bright full moon showing the way. Wonderful!

Island living with an amazing view

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I arrived to lovely fresh anthuriums in the kitchen and soft music playing through the tv. Immediately went outside to see the bay view and to hear the sounds of the ocean.
The property has kayak and snorkel stuff to use and we went out each day to explore the bay. When we were there the water was a bit murky but we still managed to see a couple of turtles right there in the protected cove. The red kayak is least likely to tip you over so give it to the beginner or unbalanced person of your group.

We enjoyed hanging out on the lanai and in the living room so we could see and hear the ocean. We also enjoyed hearing the ocean as we fell asleep each night. The bed was a memory foam for us, not sure if that's getting replaced in the remodel they've mentioned here.

Bonus - there's a washer and dryer so we were able to wash our clothes before we left!

We will be coming back to this property on our next trip to the Big Island, we loved it for it's relaxing and peaceful atmosphere as well as a home base for trips to Kona, Punalu'u beach, Waimea, Akaka Falls, and Rainbow Falls. Definitely a home away from home for us. Thank you to Jamie also for all of your help!

Some tips:
-Use bug spray any time you're going outside or within a few minutes you'll have a generous amount of bites.
-Check under the sink in the bathroom, there are some shampoo/conditioners left by previous travelers if you run out of the hotel sized hair care before the stay is over.
-The kitchen does have some sugar, salt, pepper, oil, and soy sauce for your use (or it did for us).
-Get some manapua from 7-Eleven when you're on the way through the town of Pahoa to get the keys (manapua are steamed buns/bao that come stuffed with char-sui, teriyaki chicken, or other delicious flavors). All 7-elevens have a variety of steamed items.
-Try the different eateries in Pahoa, haven't had a bad meal yet at any of them.
-Shop at the KTA in Hilo on your way to the house, they have a larger variety of foods and a larger bakery than the Malama Mart in Pahoa (macadamia nut cream pie and apple bananas). Although Malama isn't bad.
-Hilo farmer's market is amazing almost any day of the week (Saturday is it's biggest day) but there's also one North of Pahoa on Sundays that is very large.
-Leung's Chop Suey House on rt 11 South of Hilo has great cake noodles (and everything else). They are closed Tuesdays.
-Ken's has excellent pancakes of course but also try the loko moko there.

We only stayed in this house for three days, but loved what it had to offer. Having the ocean right at your front door was beautiful and the water is perfect for swimming.

We would return for sure!

Lovely bay

  • 3 of 5
This is a great location although quite a drive from a large grocery store and other shopping. The property itself is wonderful and the house clean but it is very old and it shows. The carpet in the bedroom is very very old and the mattress far too soft. Sore backs in the morning. the bay is protected but there wasn't any snorkelling. The greatest fun thing to do from this location was to go to the tidal poos and to volcano national park although that made for a long day re: the drive and the amount of time needed to explore the region. We thought that the cost was high for the age of the bungalow. If you go enjoy but be prepared for old. Blessing you. Futon in the living room would be for difficult sleeping. Sleeps 2

Owner's Response: Aloha and thank you for visiting us at the Bayfront Bungalow. For future visitors, there are several small grocery stores, banks, restaurants and shopping with a Longs Drug store in Pahoa, just 12 miles away. The King bed has just been replaced with a pillow top mattress. The owners are making upgrades. - The Management

A beautiful 4 days

  • 4 of 5
The location is exquisite. There were some minor hassles with the rental company but they were dealt with expediently. The kayaks, lawn area, and other outside amenities were fabulous. It was a wonderful area to take walks and ride bikes. The house was well stocked, a bit older, and comfortable. My only real complaint is the master bedroom mattress. It left me hurting for days...I am 62...so these things do matter.

An easy 15 minute walk to thermally heated Champagne Pond. About a mile to Waiopae tidepools for great snorkeling. Only 15 minutes to lava flow viewing. About 30 miles to Volcano National Park.

Note: As of 10/2014, there is a lava flow slowly advancing towards Pahoa. This could be a once in a lifetime chance to witness a change in the Hawaii landscape, if the lava advances into the town. There is a possibility that the highway 130 could be covered by the lava. The County has already built several alternate contingency routes - good gravel roads for travel to and from the Puna area, if needed. The car rental companies will allow rental cars to use these roads.
