The village of Duck is a quaint resort area with bike and foot paths, ocean and sound access. Located only minutes to the north is Corolla, a wild horse sanctuary with 4 wheel drive allowed on the beach, excellent shopping and dining, a restored lighthouse and many recreational opportunities. Located just to the south is Kill Devil Hills, home of the Wright Brothers' first flight; Nags Head with its famed Jockey's Ridge State Park, and Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands. Other attractions include the NC Aquarium, the Lost Colony, the Elizabethan Gardens and outlet shopping. Nags Head's Gallery Row is home to numerous artisan galleries and studios boasting local and regional works, and more artists keep studios along the quaint streets of Manteo just across the Roanoke Sound. Vineyards to the west in Currituck, and nearby colonial towns offer something for every interest.

Jockey's Ridge State Park, located on the area's highest sand dunes in Nags Head, features opportunities to learn to 'professionally' fly a kite, and the children are always entertained there with the huge sand castles. Many local rental services offer items such as canoes and kayaks, bicycles for the entire family, and various types of sporting gear.
