COZY COTTAGE WITH A VIEW NEAR MT. SNOW AND STRATTON

Newfane Cottage Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom and 1 sleeping loft, plus sleeper sofa, 2 bathrooms. Sleeps 5-6

At 'Ridgeview', you go to sleep to the flicker of a wood stove, wake up to sunshine streaming through tall windows and skylights onto honey-colored pine flooring, and watch from either of two decks as the sunlight fills the river valley and plays across the ridge opposite. Beautiful newer construction, two and a half-story salt box on ten acres, three of which are open and level. Open floor plan and vaulted ceiling, tastefully furnished with fully equipped kitchen, two full baths, two wood stoves, new washer and dryer, and extra fridge.. Loft with DVD/VCR and additional sleeping accommodations. Ground floor has queen bed, private bath with shower. Main floor has sleeper sofa with queen size mattress., and bath with tub/shower. Loft, a double bed. Linens, utilities including cable internet provided. Firewood and snowplowing included. Quiet and serene, but easily accessible from Interstate 91. Minutes from Brattleboro restaurants and shopping. Just 2 hours from Boston, 3 1/2 from NYC.

Interior changes: Since March of 2009, the sleeping loft has been accessed by a stairway. Those of you who remember the ship's ladder will be happy to know that it is much easier to get up to the third level now. In the master suite on the ground floor, there are new blinds for the window seat as well as for the French door to the deck. In the foyer, there is now a full-size refrigerator/freezer for additional food storage. Total square footage is now 1100.

New in 2012! We have redone the bathroom in the master suite. There are now new tile floors and a new shower, also tiled! Also, the foyer is redone so that we have tile across the whole surface.

Exterior Changes: Some additional clearing and trail building which began in the fall of 2010 will continue through 2013. It will be easier than ever to enjoy 'the grounds' of Ridgeview!!

I'm a New Englander by birth. Now California is home, but family, friends and this great property still tie me to my roots.

Jim Baldwin (Prefers Email) purchased this cottage in 1983

I grew up in the general area, and when friends relocated nearby, I started looking for a few vacant acres. In the early 80's, I bought this acreage as a woodlot, and let it sit for about a decade, thinning trees and dreaming. In the mid 90's, construction began. The house was finished in 1997, and has been a refuge for me, my family and my guests ever since.

The peace of this spot is wonderful. I love making coffee in the morning and taking it out onto the deck to watch the light come up, and hear the birds welcome the day. Whenever I am asked to imagine 'my spot' for feeling secure and tranquil, I call up this place—the Adirondack chair on the deck in Newfane.

A SLICE OF HEAVEN IN VERMONT

  • 5 of 5
What an amazing experience. I was looking for technology detox and to relax after the first four months of middle school teaching and I got even more than I expected. The owner was such a pleasure to deal with and the accommodations were cozy and inviting. The house is set away in the woods, but with an amazing backyard view of the mountains. It is very accessible to all the necessities - homemade food, hiking trails, and clean air. The house had two woodburning stoves - one in the dowsnstairs bedroom, and one upstairs in the living area. I loved the loft bed and the skylight windows that either showed off the amazing night sky or got snow covered after a typical Vermont storm. The driveway was plowed for us without having to make a call and the highways are always cleared. Take advantage of all the surrounding towns with the antique stores, homemade pies, and the snowshoeing trails. I highly recommend this property to anyone looking to just get away!

A TRUE MID-SUMMER VACATION AT A DELIGHTFUL CABIN IN VERMONT

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I had a truly wonderful vacation at the cabin! We're back home now and have sent pictures to friends and family that capture the "essence". People are replying, asking if we really went to Brigadoon. No, I tell them, we went a beautiful cabin in Newfane, Vermont!

Our vacation happened to coincide with the Annual Rock River Art Tour. We were curious, and headed off in the direction of The Schoolhouse down Williamsville Rd, where the tour began. We ended up spending an entire afternoon seeing beautiful artwork and meeting kindred spirits. The caliber of the artists was very high! I bought a beautiful vase, inscribed with a goat image amid calligraphic designs which will be in my living room, filled with flowers thoroughout the year. It will also hold the memories of our special vacation at the Newfane cabin.

I think we did every single thing our thoughtful owner listed in his detailed "Guide". I went crazy over the handmade, icy cold 'soft serve' at Dutton's. Pure Maple and Mixed Berry flavors were out of this world! In fact, I slurped the entire cone contents forward, right onto ME, down the front of my shirt, and into my flip flops! The server was aghast and gave me a free second cone.

One day, we stopped in at The Historical Society and were captivated by the exhibits there. For such a small place, there is much to see.The local history is fascinating.

Both of us think the cabin is amazing in every way. Both outside and inside. We were very much at home. It's open and airy. The Shaker Style furniture is timeless, putting the emphasis on the beautiful landscape outside and not on fussy decor. It is cozy and comfortable, easy to keep clean, bright and cheery. A unique use of space is having a glass door that separates the downstairs Master Bedroom from the entire upstairs. This a great way to allow early-to-bed folks to have quiet while others might stay up and watch a DVD or talk.

I was so happy to find The Audubon New England Nature Guide which I had, alas, left at home by our front door. Phooey, said I...and then... there it was, right on the shelf! We identified all kinds of flora and fauna. I did a lot of that as a child and was able to find many species of plants right outside the door. We heard a Barred Owl at night!

Well, I could go on and on, but just know that for two vacationers, exhausted and wilted after three heat waves at home, and in much need of a peaceful, relaxing "time out", our vacation was perfect!

BEAUTIFUL OFF THE BEATEN PATH VERMONT RETREAT

  • 5 of 5
My girlfriend and I were looking to go skiing in Vermont between the Christmas and New Years 2011 holidays. We began looking into homes off the beaten path in Vermont where we could relax; which still has access to major ski resorts without the hassle of the tourist traps. This house is exactly what we were looking for, it was cozy and perfect romantic getaway for the two of us. Stratton and Mount Snow are within a 45 minute scenic drive and Brattleboro is ~10 miles. Ricks tavern is a close watering hole which we frequented after a long day on the mountain. Overall if you want to get away from the city life, this is a perfect location. Thanks for renting your beautiful home to us Jim; we hope to stay again sometime soon!

EXCELLENT HOME!

  • 5 of 5
It happens that Hurricane Irene chose to visit Southern Vermont just before us. The owner kept us apprised of road conditions around the home and in Brattleboro proper. Except for a minor detour on Rte 30, our vacation was not affected by the storm.
We walked into the cabin and right away I could see that it was sparkling clean. The master bedroom and bath are on the ground level which meant I could read in bed while hubby watched movies two flights up in the loft. The main room/kitchen is where we spent most of our time. There is a pretty glass door at the top of the stairs so I could listen to NPR through my laptop and and make breakfast while hubby slept in. A bonus was a full bath right off the kitchen. Because I have arthritis, I was happy not to have to go up and down the steps to use the other bathroom and the tub was a good size too. There is a full washer/dryer set right off the master. Because we swam a few times in a pool in town, it was very convenient to be able to clean our suits and towels.
As I sat in the big chair in the main room I saw a turkey! He scooted away before I could get a picture. We spent one rainy day strolling around Brattleboro. Talking to the owner of A Mystery Book Shop,
we found out he had lived near us for years. I managed not to buy yarn in Knit or Dye,
but did get a shawl pin for a project. Tucked away below the knit shop was a tea emporium
where I splurged on some bulk tea for the grand price of $2.50
I keep picturing the wood stoves (there are two!) in the house. I did not get a chance to sit in the window seat in the master bedroom suite. I am imagining myself sitting there, knitting with a steaming mug of tea nearby along with my camera and watching the flickering flames in the woodstove.... Yes we will be back!

GREAT PLACE!

  • 5 of 5
You won't be disappointed! The view is amazing and sitting in front of the wood stove, with the view as your backdrop is even more amazing. Truly a great house and the owner is wonderful to work with. There are many great restaurants in Brattleboro (Mocha Joes and Fireworks, to name a couple) and Newfane (Rick's Tavern)- the Grafton Cheese Factory is a must-- plus the ride to Stratton is an easy, scenic 25 minutes. Highly recommended! We hope to visit again soon!
