Overview

Newfane Cottage Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom and 1 sleeping loft, plus sleeper sofa, 2 bathrooms. Sleeps 5-6

At 'Ridgeview', you go to sleep to the flicker of a wood stove, wake up to sunshine streaming through tall windows and skylights onto honey-colored pine flooring, and watch from either of two decks as the sunlight fills the river valley and plays across the ridge opposite. Beautiful newer construction, two and a half-story salt box on ten acres, three of which are open and level. Open floor plan and vaulted ceiling, tastefully furnished with fully equipped kitchen, two full baths, two wood stoves, new washer and dryer, and extra fridge.. Loft with DVD/VCR and additional sleeping accommodations. Ground floor has queen bed, private bath with shower. Main floor has sleeper sofa with queen size mattress., and bath with tub/shower. Loft, a double bed. Linens, utilities including cable internet provided. Firewood and snowplowing included. Quiet and serene, but easily accessible from Interstate 91. Minutes from Brattleboro restaurants and shopping. Just 2 hours from Boston, 3 1/2 from NYC.

Interior changes: Since March of 2009, the sleeping loft has been accessed by a stairway. Those of you who remember the ship's ladder will be happy to know that it is much easier to get up to the third level now. In the master suite on the ground floor, there are new blinds for the window seat as well as for the French door to the deck. In the foyer, there is now a full-size refrigerator/freezer for additional food storage. Total square footage is now 1100.

New in 2012! We have redone the bathroom in the master suite. There are now new tile floors and a new shower, also tiled! Also, the foyer is redone so that we have tile across the whole surface.

Exterior Changes: Some additional clearing and trail building which began in the fall of 2010 will continue through 2013. It will be easier than ever to enjoy 'the grounds' of Ridgeview!!

About Jim Baldwin (Prefers Email)

I'm a New Englander by birth. Now California is home, but family, friends and this great property still tie me to my roots.

Jim Baldwin (Prefers Email) purchased this cottage in 1983

Why Jim Baldwin (Prefers Email) chose Newfane

I grew up in the general area, and when friends relocated nearby, I started looking for a few vacant acres. In the early 80's, I bought this acreage as a woodlot, and let it sit for about a decade, thinning trees and dreaming. In the mid 90's, construction began. The house was finished in 1997, and has been a refuge for me, my family and my guests ever since.

What makes this cottage unique

The peace of this spot is wonderful. I love making coffee in the morning and taking it out onto the deck to watch the light come up, and hear the birds welcome the day. Whenever I am asked to imagine 'my spot' for feeling secure and tranquil, I call up this place—the Adirondack chair on the deck in Newfane.

A slice of heaven in Vermont

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing experience. I was looking for technology detox and to relax after the first four months of middle school teaching and I got even more than I expected. The owner was such a pleasure to deal with and the accommodations were cozy and inviting. The house is set away in the woods, but with an amazing backyard view of the mountains. It is very accessible to all the necessities - homemade food, hiking trails, and clean air. The house had two woodburning stoves - one in the dowsnstairs bedroom, and one upstairs in the living area. I loved the loft bed and the skylight windows that either showed off the amazing night sky or got snow covered after a typical Vermont storm. The driveway was plowed for us without having to make a call and the highways are always cleared. Take advantage of all the surrounding towns with the antique stores, homemade pies, and the snowshoeing trails. I highly recommend this property to anyone looking to just get away!

Remote, Charming, Cozy

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed for a romantic Valentine weekend. We love to cross country ski, cook and read. The cottage is about 30 minutes from Timber Creek Cross Country Ski Center, near Mt. Snow, and Grafton Ponds Cross Country Ski Area. Both are gorgeous! The cottage is sweet! Neat and clean and tastefully furnished with lots of windows and sunlight. Two wood burning stoves add heat and ambiance. Neighboring houses cannot be seen, just trees, sky and Mt. Snow. So, it feels totally remote and private. The owner is wonderful and truly wants his guests to have a great experience. We hope to return.

Beautiful Escape!

  • 5 of 5

I wish there was video of my face when I opened the front door... It was LOVE at first sight :) The pictures don't give this cabin enough justice! (And the pix are pretty good) Our stay was perfect from beginning to end thanks to Jim and his layout that he has setup. Every question you could possibly ask is typed up and ready to read, from - where to eat, where to shop, what to do around town -- and then everything about What to do in the Cabin itself in case you had any issues/ need extra towels, how to work the wooden stoves etc.

It was GREAT!

We brought food with us to cook the first night which worked out nicely. The previous guests even started to stock up the pantry with spices and tin foil!! We made sure to replenish as well :)

We ventured out the rest of the time we were there heading into the small surrounding towns having a ball- wine tastings, bought some Vermont Cheddar & Syrup of course.

This was a romantic, beautiful getaway that we will definitely be coming back to. I can't wait to book out next trip! Thanks again Jim!!

Just a perfect New Year's weekend!!!

  • 5 of 5

The pictures and the way Jim portrait the cabin as a cozy cottage with a view is very appealing but wait until you are there physically. It is beautiful, it is cozy and it is as someone wrote, a piece of heaven. Inside is very warm, everything works perfect and you find all you need to make your stay very confortably. But I think the outdoor is what makes this place unforgettable. I will be back Jim but at least for a couple of weeks, 5 days is just NOT enough...

TRANQUIL AND RELAXING

  • 5 of 5

We wanted a peaceful and relaxing holiday... and we found it here! From the beautiful views, the early morning mist, the owls hooting in late evening... it was all very magical and truly a wonderful stay. The cabin itself is cozy, and as we were there in summer, we always had the windows open to allow for the breeze which was quite pleasant. Morning coffee on the back deck overlooking the ridge (especially with the mist) is A DEFINITE MUST! We borrowed Jim's Vermont Altas when we drove along the backroads... which was, to say the very least, PRICELESS! Touring the backroads was amazing, and only there do you come across the most charming towns and small communities, not to mention all the covered bridges Vermont has to offer. We had a great breakfast at the Newfane Creamery one morning before setting off on yet another one of our journeys. We also made a point of stopping in at Curtis' Barbeque on our way home from Bellows Falls one afternoon. Curtis took the time to have a wonderful chat with us, and the food was fabulous... highly recommended! All in all, it was just what we needed and we came home totally refreshed.
