Nice cottage but has issues

  • 3 of 5
First of all, let us state that the owner was very pleasant to deal with during the rental process and once we arrived. However there were many items in her advertisement that are not correct or outdated. We also encountered some situations during our stay that one would not expect in a rental.

1. The house was not ready at 4pm as stated in the lease agreement nor was it ready when we returned at 6pm. Try explaining that to 2 tired, hungry kids who had been on the road since 8am!
2. The property welcome letter stated that if she had a good rental year, improvements would be made. This made sense since the microwave did not work, the 2nd floor tv did not work, the 1st floor tv worked only after we fixed it ourselves and the 1st floor bathroom door does not shut.
3. The rental house is the owner's house (she stays in a studio on property when it is rented) and we quickly discovered that her telephone rings throughout the day. This resulted in a few rude morning wakeups and was a general annoyance as we were unable to shut the ringer off.
4. It is advertised as a 3 bedroom house but only has one official bedroom with a door. The other two "bedrooms" should be called sleeping loft areas. We were able to make it work but that may not be the case for all.
5.Most closets, drawers and dresser tops are full of her personal belongings and we found very little space to hang clothes or unpack or own items.
6. Photos are outdated in the ad as there is no longer a vegetable garden, the meditation garden is overgrown and roof shingles are curling up and falling off.

Even though there were many issues with the rental and it wasn't what we were expecting, we made the best of it and had a great week on the island.

We are not sure who wrote the four 5 star reviews but maybe the house was in much better shape back then and the ringing telephone didn't bother them. We've had great experiences with rentals in the past, this just wasn't one of them.

Owner's Response: I am so sorry you were dissatisfied with your stay at Artist’s Haven. I find it strange that you did not confront me with these issues especially since I live in my studio also on the property. All you had to do was knock on the door. I also question why you waited a year to review. Below are my responses to your complaints, numbered as you have:
1. The cleaning and preparing of the cottage is done by me in between quest stays. It is not enough time if the previous guests leave the house a mess and use every towel. This year I am hiring help to do this more quickly than I can, so it doesn’t cause any problems. By the way, it was ready when you returned. I was just packing up my vacuum cleaner and cleaning supplies.
2. Guests broke off the handle to the microwave, but it does work. I used it all winter long opening the door from the bottom. The TVs all work fine. You could have asked for help in operating them. There are also many videos available for you to watch. The first floor bathroom door sometimes sticks in the humid summer weather.
3. As far as the phone, you could have just disconnected it! If you needed to use it, you could have plugged it back in the wall. I still would get calls in the studio. I now have a separate land line for the cottage.
4. The master bedroom upstairs exposed to the 4 skylights on the cathedral ceiling is, most of the time, considered a pleasant surprise. The description was altered on HomeAway site to explain this. For couples seeking privacy, there is the downstairs bedroom.
5. I live in Artist’s Haven the rest of the year. I emptied out all bureaus and several closets which is more than adequate space for a vacation’s wardrobe for several people. However, this year all closets and bureaus are available for the guests.
6. This spring I had knee replacement surgery. Last year I did not plant a vegie garden because my knees would not let me. I did inform guests of two great organic gardens where they could get fresh vegetables, baked goods and gourmet specialties. One farm is located just at the opening of the road to the cottage and the other farm run by the College of Atlantic is only 5 minutes away.
The improvement needed on the 24 year old house was a new roof. This was completed for this season of rentals. New photos will be added to the website this year.
$25 dining out coupons to favorite island restaurants are left for my quests to enjoy as a thank you for staying and/or an apology for any disappointment.

Perfect Vacation Rental

Wonderful house in a beautiful location, just a short distance from both downtown Bar Harbor and the Acadia National Park Visitors' Center. I would highly recommend this to anyone planning to visit the Bar Harbor area. Just the spot to unwind after a day of hiking, biking, kayaking or just wandering around town.

Mount Desert Island Vacation

A beautiful home in harmony with its wooded, quiet surroundings. It is a rare opportunity to stay in a home which has so much artistic detail, so beautifully assembled. The location and the home are truly a retreat. We loved being here and are already thinking about when we can return.

Charmiing House - Great Location

  • 5 of 5
We just spent a delightful week at Artist's Haven! Lovely house, interesting and beautiful furnishings in a very quiet area. Easy to get to all of Acadia Nat'l Park's attractions and the wonderful restaurants on both sides of the island (try the nearby Town Hill Bistro). Close to Town Hill Market: good take-out sandwiches and good wine selection.. Great place to vacation!
