OWNERS DEFINITION OF UPSCALE RENTAL:

Having rented many vacation homes in Maggie Valley over the past 25 years, we experienced many that were not maintained well. Mattresses were old and hard, linens were worn or there was an insufficient quantity. TVs were old and lacked many of the channels we enjoyed at home. Much of the décor was whatever the owner had left over from their main house. Then occasionally we would rent a place that was really nice. When we purchased the Bear Den we decided we wanted to do all we could possibly afford to make the Bear Den like the rentals we enjoyed. So, upscale vacation rental to us is ensuring the Bear Den is well maintained, mattresses are comfortable, linens are plentiful, TVs are up to date with many channels to choose from. There is ample outdoor seating. The appliances are replaced periodically. Every spring we do major upgrades to the Bear Den to ensure none of our guests are disappointed. In 2012 we replaced all interior doors with solid wood 6 panel doors and added an outdoor stone firepit.

About Don Rucker

Originally from Kentucky but moved to Summerville, South Carolina in 1976 as part of a career move with IBM. I have since opened a few computer stores in the Low Country that helps pay for what is important: Our Harley's, We are avid rides and love to do road trips. We also enjoy returning to Kentucky a few times a year to ride our four wheelers in the hills we love. But, the sweet spot for us is Maggie Valley, North Carolina. When we travel we can't help but compare every place we visit to North Carolina and so far we have not found any place that compares to Maggie Valley or the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina.

Don Rucker purchased this cabin in 2007

Why Don Rucker chose Maggie Valley

Terri and I wanted a great view without having to drive up a mountain road to enjoy it. I ride a Harley Davidson so having a paved easy access road is very important.

What makes this cabin unique

Soco Mountain View!! Privacy is great at the Bear Den. There are only a few houses in this Mountain community of vacation homes.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful stay at the Bear Den. It was the perfect get away for our 10 year wedding Anniversary. We loved the comfy bed & couch & giant TV. We also enjoyed the hottub which relaxed our muscles after a full day of skiing. Thank you for sharing your home on VRBO. Keren & Michael P.S. We enjoyed all the pictures too! You are so artistic!

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I could not ask for a better "mini- vacation" to see snow and enjoy the mountains of Tennessee. And we could not ask for a more perfect place to stay than Bear Den. It had all the comforts of home and more. The place was so clean and cozy that we felt right at home the moment we opened the door. It had all the little details other places usually miss like detailed instructions on how to use the fireplace, hot tub and TV's for us technically challenged individuals. And let me talk about customer service! The owner was exceptional. He knew it had snowed the night before our arrival and gave us the option to cancel if needed although our goal was to see snow so that was not an option for us. He then had the driveway, porch and hot tub cleared of snow before our arrival and was only a quick text or phone call away if we needed anything. After each day of playing in the snow, exploring the smokey mountains and skiing it was such a pleasure to come back to the warmth and charm of Bear Den. Thank you for the great memories!

Lovely!!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was obviously decorated to please the renter! We had decided on a last-minute anniversary getaway, and really did luck up to find this comfortable cottage available for the dates we wanted. Personal touches from the bear motif to the framed photographs of flora and fauna really spoke of the attentive owners. We enjoyed watching the butterflies, bunnies and hummingbirds that seemed to like the view as much as we did!

AMAZING ATMOSPHERE & PLEASANT VACATIONING PLACE

  • 5 of 5

This home is more welcoming and homey than any picture can convey. My family and I stayed there over the weekend, as a surprise for my daughter's 10th birthday, and we loved and enjoyed every minute of it. She specifically fell in love with the Bear's Den hot tub. I personally enjoy all of the thought and preparation that went into providing small items most mountain vacationers forget, such as Smore skewers or sugar for their coffee. I also adored their idea to provide interesting nearby tourist attractions and also information as to accessing the Blue Ridge Parkway and it's sightseeing spots. My family thoroughly enjoyed every minute of their stay and we hated to leave, therefore we will certainly be repeat visitors for years to come.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

This was our third stay at the Bear Den. Each time is better as each time we spend more time in the house or should I say on the deck. Our entertainment are the hummingbirds , they flew so close to us. The house was nice and clean and the addition of the Keurig was a nice touch. Will be back next year.

A Great Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our stay at the Bear Den and had a great time. The house was exactly what we needed to feel comfortable, relaxed and made us want to stay a lot longer than we had booked. The pictures don't do this cozy house enough justice! It has a great view off the back deck- we enjoyed sitting on the swing watching the clouds roll off the top of the mountains. We also loved the frequent hummingbirds that visited all day long. There are a lot of fun things to do in the area as well. Definitely check out Waynesville. I loved the shopping and my husband enjoyed the local breweries and sampling some tasty local brews! Cataloochee Valley was a great trip- we saw Elk up close and even had a picnic next to the river. Local waterfalls we checked out were Mingo Falls and Soco Falls- both were well worth the short climbs! And for a full day of walking, shopping and great dining we checked out Asheville. Highly recommend Asheville Brewery Company for some delicious pizza and a very unique outdoor porch area! We had a great time and are counting down the days to come back! Thanks Don- everything was perfect!
