Clapham Old town - Around the corner from the West end of Clapham High Street is the old market part of Clapham. The buildings are grander, Queen Anne to Georgian period, the shops are more boutique and everything feels like a little market town outside of London.
The best local shops, cafes and pubs. Notably, a fantastic local butcher is situated here, surrounded by trendy little gift and clothes shops. A couple of shops that stock furniture, flowers and other household items with style are worth a look. Full English breakfast at the local cafe is highly recommended with a morning paper. There is also a really good food market every Saturday on Venn Street with organic vegetables, deli stores, fresh bread, cheeses, roast chicken, fish and a variety of street food.
The Dairy (Bar & Bistro)
One of our favourite restaurant is located just a stone's throw from Clapham Common tube station, is a bar and bistro. Seasonal British ingredients are treated with a level of finesse that would be the envy of many Japanese restaurants. You realise this from the very start. A robata grill is used not just for grilling meats, but for smoking the butter (using applewood chips). A pat of this butter is served on a big beach pebble, with some of the Dairy’s wholesome own-made bread.
This sort of attention to detail permeates the kitchen’s menu. Beautifully crafted rustic plates are used to present simple dishes such as a warm salad of new potatoes, sorrel leaves and a generous amount of fresh truffle, grated at the table. A fillet of mackerel is charred on the grill then placed on fennel, with its complementary hint of anise flavour; the plate decorated with a smear of cucumber and a fresh dill frond. Beef short rib is slow cooked for 24 hours before being served with grilled spring onions and bone marrow. This is fancy cooking: not what you expect in a neighbourhood restaurant.
Modern Japanese menu contains everything from seaweed salads to sushi & sashimi. Black cod in miso and sizzling beef teriyaki is our favourite. Generally, the more Japanese the dish, the better.
Gastronomy is taken seriously. The smartly dressed room, with its class-act glassware & crockery, exudes confidence, and the menu adds a frisson of excitement. Hearty yet refined British-led cooking. The staff are both friendly & on-the-ball.
Four O Nine (Modern European)
Tucked away from Clapham’s High Street with only a discreet brass plaque to guide you, Four O Nine restaurant is a hidden gem specialising in simple but sophisticated modern European cuisine. French cuisine in beautifully presented using seasonal produce and top-notch ingredients. The wine list is a real treat for connoisseurs.
Bodean's BBQ (American)
For meat lovers, Bodean's BBQ is a relaxed, family style restaurant who serves large Buffalo chicken wings and baby back ribs, even a half rack (served with hand-cut chips) should satisfy a hungry carnivore. US beers include Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (bottled) and Blue Moon (draught). There is a no-bookings policy so arrive early to get a table, it’s a popular spot with twenty-somethings midweek and families at weekends. A fun place to visit for a slice of American pie.
