|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
La Casita de Tucson is a unique private getaway for two adults. Our guesthouse includes a hot tub & counter-current pool and a large deck for picnics and sunbathing. Great view of the Catalina Mts from the pool area.
Located in the foothills of the Tucson Mountains, our guests feel the spaciousness and serenity of the Sonoran Desert and enjoy the beauty of our surrounding mountains and star-filled nights. But we are only 15 minutes from downtown and 25 minutes or less to the University of Arizona and several golf courses, including Quarry Pines & Starr Pass. Silverbell, a well-maintained muni, is only 10 minutes away. Good restaurants are about 15 minutes down the road.
The furnishings and decor are definitely Southwestern comfortable. The main room has a high-end home theater with 56' HDTV, Blue Ray DVD player, and built in surround sound. Here you will find an extensive library of CD's and DVD's. WiFi, of course.
The bathroom has a beautifully tiled walk-in shower. Fresh linens & towels provided.
La Casita has its own backyard, patio, and BBQ and our guests enjoy interesting grounds, including cactus gardens, a rose garden, a mission fountain, and three patios with many strange and fascinating plants. Laundry can easily be arranged. The washer/dryer are in the main residence. Just ask.
La Casita is perfect for those who want to visit Southern Arizona's many attractions, such as Bisbee, Tombstone, Titan Missile Site, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Air and Space Museum and our excellent history museums that illustrate the area's rich Native American, Spanish, Mexican and Anglo heritage. Several fine Indian Casinos and many hiking trails are nearby. For our recommendations, go to our SouthernArizonaGuide.com.
Owner Jim Gressinger is a retired newspaper publisher.
Ms. Karen & I retired to Tucson in 2003. Currently we publish Southern Arizona Guide, a content-rich website with over 100 dining reviews; 50 original videos & dozens of slideshows about the most interesting people & places in Southern Arizona; our recommendations for the best things to see & do; plus a lot of local history & cultural heritage. Last year we had over 250,000 visitors to our website.
We do have advertisers on our website. Our rule is simple. If we cannot wholeheartedly recommend your establishment to our friends & family, you cannot advertise on Southern Arizona Guide.
Our dining reviews are as objective as we can make them. Seldom does a restaurant owner or manager know that we've been to his or her establishment until a week or two later when we publish our review on Southern Arizona Guide or on our Southern Arizona Guide blog.
I almost always take other with me to do a review. The deal is simple. I pay for the meals. They each have to order something different so we can sample a broad spectrum of menu items.
On our Southern Arizona Guide, there are restaurants, attractions, and other places that we DO NOT recommend. For the benefit of our website visitors, we are serious critics, not like you will find elsewhere.
Our casita is roomy & comfortable. It has its own back yard with cactus garden. But our guests can enjoy all of our other gardens such as the rose garden, and the anniversary garden.
Our guests have no sense that there is a major metropolitan area anywhere nearby. Yet, it takes only 15 minutes to get to the Historic District of Downtown Tucson and 22 minutes to the University of Arizona.
When we have no guests, the Casita is our den and home theater. Our guests get to take advantage of a very high end music & video system.
Another advantage of staying at La Casita is that very few locals know the area as well as we do. That's not bragging. It's our job. Our guests take advantage of our local knowledge. The best hiking trails, the best museums, the best art galleries and performing arts, etc. We love sharing our local knowledge. It's what we do.

We've stayed at many VRBOs, in terrific locations, but this Casita in Tucson is the best. The Casita itself is beautifully appointed, and roomy, but it's the (private) patio and gardens that take the experience over the top. We came to Tucson for a "home base" for some birdwatching. Little did we know that the birding at the Casita would rival anything we found elsewhere -- Karen has birdfeeders up in numerous locations. We saw gila and ladder-backed woodpeckers, Costa's and broad-billed hummers, verdin, curve-billed thrasher, mourning doves, Gambel's quail and many more -- all in our bathrobes on the patio. Never before had we heard of bathrobe birding!! Jim and Karen are terrific hosts, we had great talks on their deck during happy hour. Treat yourselves to a stay at the Casita!!
Our week at La Casita in the Tucson Mountain foothills was a highlight of our two month trip to the Southwest. With its high ceilings and open concept it provided a light-filled, spacious and tastefully decorated dwelling for the two of us and our yellow Lab. A comfy bed, good reading lights, a mini library of books, DVDs and music, a well-stocked kitchen--it was hard to tear ourselves away. Mornings on the patio were a special delight as each day brought new plant and bird discoveries in the stunning desert garden surrounding the Casita.
Jim and Karen were friendly and hospitable; we turned to Jim's website throughout our week for background and day-trip suggestions and appreciated Karen's tips for good dog-walking destinations. We have already recommended La Casita to friends and will continue to do so! Thanks Jim and Karen for providing such a great introduction to the delights of Tucson and surrounding area.
As a spur of the moment getaway (we were fortunate that the Casita was available!) We both hibernated and explored Tucson. La Casita was beautifully secluded yet convienent to All Things Tucson and Beyond. Everything we needed was available to us, plus things we hadn't even thought were in the need category. We are sure it is The Best Spot in Tucson for many reasons, but particularly because Jim and Karen are Tour Guides extrodinaire! Morning coffee and breakfast outside ... circle around the full moon viewed from the hot tub ... cactus garden tour ... restaurant recommendations ... mission suggestions ... all made up a much needed three day respite for us. Thank you, thank you both for opening up this opportunity.
La Casita de Tucson was even better than we expected it to be. We found a relaxing, optimally located guest house with lots of added gifts! In no particular order:
--located on the western aspects of Tucson in a very lightly traveled area with great roads and location good for additional tranquility and recharging
--close to the Tucson mountains for hiking, walking, picnicking
--close to I-10 and other major streets making it easy to get to Tucson or Tubac or elsewhere
--wonderful back patio for sunrise experiences, amid a desert garden full of colors and birds to enjoy
--spacious rooms with tall ceilings and lots of windows for an even sunnier experience
--well stocked kitchen to fix meals and allow you enjoy even more time sitting, reading, birding, relaxing or watching movies, instead of going out if you don't want
--owners are extremely knowledgeable about many restaurants--we had 100% success with their suggestions!!!!
--gracious and sensitive owners who see that you have everything you need, but also sensitive to giving you space to relax and have private time
We would DEFINITELY return, hands down!!
We spent 4 nights at Jim and Karen's Casita. It is clean, comfortable, spacious and beautifully decorated. The large casita is filled with the most comfortable furniture I've ever lounged in. The landscaping is marvelous, and the owners are friendly and helpful. Their website was chock full of excellent suggestions about Southern AZ. Karen sent us on a hike with dozens of nice examples of rock art that is not mentioned in any guide book I am aware of. We had a very relaxing and fun time there!
This was our 1st VRBO experience and we were very satisfied. La Casita is very comfortable with more than enough room for the 2 of us and our Golden Retriever. A large living space and bedroom, ceiling fans, a beautiful over-sized shower (no tub), big screen tv, nice stereo along with a large collection of cd's, dvd's, and books, made hanging out inside easy. Although we spent most of our downtime sitting on the back porch admiring the well cared for yard, and beyond that, the beautiful desert landscape and wildlife, (coyotes and many different types of birds). We were pleasantly surprised with Tucson. Plenty to do and see, and some nice people, including Jim and Karen, our hosts, who know most everything there is to know about Tucson, past & present. Thanks guys, hope to see you again, M & J
