About Catherine Perry

Catherine Perry is the owner and innkeeper of A House of Open Arms. I helped to build this house from the ground up. I began in 2004 and completed the building process in 2006. I am a full time artist as well as the Innkeeper on this property and I welcome my guests at the ferry dock in Cruz Bay and offer a first evening welcome dinner. I also provide some basic essentials for your first few days: milk, homemade granola, coffee, sugar and tea. To learn more: visit my website at www.houseofopenarms.com

Catherine Perry purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Catherine Perry chose Hurricane Hole

I purchased this land in 2003 to begin a dream of being a working artist and Innkeeper on St. John. I create unique lighting for many private homes on St. John. My guests are welcome to visit my art website of www.artofopenarms.com or visit my studio during their stay here!

What makes this cottage unique

A House of Open Arms is on the electric grid to provide A/C but is also solar-powered and purified rainwater-fed. It sits amid lush tropical gardens, a 180 degree view of the sea. Cooling easterly breezes come up the hill making the need for a/c very optional. Hawks, kestrels, bananaquits, Lesser Antilles bull finches, Puerto Rican bull finches, and magnificent frigates float above with the crashing sea below. This is truly a nature lover's paradise. It is made all the sweeter by the knowledge much of the electricity and all of the water used on the property are collected from the sun and sky, with minimal impact on the surrounding environment.

Lovely cottage overlooking Coral Bay

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in the Cottage at the "House with Open Arms" in Coral Bay. The cottage is reached by a 0.7 mile bumpy drive (so you will be glad you have a jeep rental) down a gravel road. And it is a HILLSIDE cottage so that you need to be prepared for the equivalent of about 6 floors worth of steps down to the cottage and up to your car each day. But when you settle into your cottage it is a little piece of heaven. One large room plus an indoor-outdoor bathroom and a small kitchen is augmented by a wrap-around porch/deck with sweeping views across Coral Bay and Hurricane Hole. Your hostess, artist Catherine Perry, is terrific and lives above the cottage in a larger house that also contains a second "Villa" rental. She has planted an abundance of screening bushes and your privacy at the cottage is assured. We ate breakfast in the cottage each day and then went out to one or two beaches for the day, eating in Coral Bay (mostly) or Cruz Bay for lunch and shopping for dinner which we then cooked at the cottage on our return, choosing to dine on the deck overlooking the Caribbean each night. There are three very good food stores right in Coral Bay so after an initial shopping trip to larger stores in Cruz, we decided to shop only on the east end. Great fresh fish at Calabash Market, by the way. Very good Internet service (but no Verizon phone service) kept us in touch and we didn't miss TV, thanks to Netflix and Amazon Prime. We highly recommend House with Open Arms and, as others have said, came to welcome the steps up to the car as part of our daily exercise routine that, perhaps, justified all those hours lying on the beach reading. We loved Maho Bay, as it was often less crowded than the beaches further to the west. And, of course, that beach is close to Colombo's...a mandatory daily stop for a smoothie.

Unique Coral Bay Villa

  • 5 of 5

**This review is for the Villa** I'll say it straight up - A House of Open Arms will not be everyone's cup of tea. If you want to be able to walk to shops and restaurants, don't stay here. If you don't enjoy peace, quiet and tranquility, keep away. Don't want a little aerobic exercise to get to your car each day, stay somewhere else. However, if you enjoy a relaxing space with few electronic distractions, a warm & welcoming owner and a central location on the "quiet end" of St. John then A House of Open Arms is for you. This was our 9th trip to St. John and we have stayed at several villas. None have had the welcoming feel that A House of Open Arms has. Catherine is as involved or unobtrusive as you want her to be. The welcome dinner is such a wonderful touch after a day traveling. And we haven't found any other villa that provides the same value for price or level of service. As other reviewers have mentioned, both the road to the villa and villa access are challenging. However, that is not unique on St. John. What really sets A House of Open Arms apart (and makes up for the aerobic aspect of the location!) is Catherine's hospitality. A House of Open Arms in a gem!

wonderful respite

  • 5 of 5

We were so lucky to happen across a cancellation in this special spot, looking for a warm, relaxing, and somewhat adventurous respite. Catherine is wonderfully welcoming, and it felt special to be oriented starting directly with her pick up at ferry and dinner that evening. We really enjoyed our relaxing mornings on the porch, as well as a taking advantage of suitable cooking arrangements for some of the best meals we had on the island. A great, beautiful spot at the quiet end of the island, with easy access to snorkeling and hikes.

Couldn't be more relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in the cottage! Beautiful weather, breathtaking views and crazy cute birds to enjoy the crashing waves with in the morning. It was so much more than we were expecting. Even the outdoor shower is beautiful and had an awesome view. It was a bit buggy when the wind died down but nothing a little spray wouldn't fix. All the essentials were here for us plus a few extras.

Ms. Catherine really provides all the major things you may need, and makes a wonderful dinner for you to enjoy at the Cottage upon arrival. Truly appreciated after a long day of travel. She is such a sweet person, and we couldn't have found a nicer person to stay with. We will be back!

got to see to believe

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at House OF Open arms for our 25th anniversary.

All of the previous reviews are spot on.

We had a fantastic time.

The location is very private and beautiful/about a 20 min drive from the ferry.

WE were met by Catherine at the Ferry and she escorted us to get our rental jeep{which is a must for travel on this island to see all the secluded bays and beaches}

Also some of the roads are a challenge and adventure to get to some of the beaches so please take the challenge.

She then took us to the grocery store to get some essentials and then we followed her to the cottage..{there are a few stairs so no high heels}

wow you may never want to leave!

The meal she prepared the first night...awesome

She really knows how to help you settle in to island life.

We were mailed info about the island from Catherine prior to the trip.

She personalizes your visit according to what you like to do if you want her to and we wanted her to advise us.

We traveled every day to a different location.hiking/snorkeling/fishing/just hanging out at different beaches and bays.

We preferred staying at the cottage in the evenings and cooking out on the grill and relaxing on the front porch/

We did travel for dinner one night and the food was great in nearby town.

i hope we get the opportunity to visit again and we are referring this wonderful getaway to our family and friends.

exceptional hospitality, cottage and location

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were fortunate enough to stay here for 4 nights recently. Our trip was last minute and just by chance the owner, Catherine, had a cancellation. We couldn't recommend staying here highly enough. The cottage itself is beautiful, with wonderful privacy and incredible vistas. It is really appointed thoughtfully; the outside shower is great; you can shower under the stars or while overlooking the Caribbean. More importantly, Catherine does a few things that make a huge difference, especially upon arrival. She met us at the ferry, took us to get our rental car, to the supermarket and then led us to her property. The first night there she delivers dinner to you, while having stacked a bottle of win in the refrigerator and supplying a pound of coffee, milk, orange juice and granola. After traveling to get to St. John, these gestures, for us, really made a huge difference. We could relax the first night, not having to run out for food and were set for the next morning as well. The cottage itself is a wonderful place to be and Catherine's hospitality is completely unobtrusive and helpful. I should also note that there were very few bugs at night in this location, possibly due to the constant breeze and the location of the cottage itself. We felt lucky to get to stay there and hope to return. We would recommend it highly.
