HEAVEN!

Pittsburgh Pittsburgh, PA
Review Submitted: October 13, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
We were unable to rent the house in Main that we have been renting for the last 10 years. Finding The Boat House on the internet, we gave it a try, as it sounded like a place that would provide solitude and beauty. We were so happy that it was our choice. The beautifully appointed house provides all the comforts of home, yet the solitude of the island provides a very peaceful experience. Sitting on the deck reading or playing Scrabble, we watched the sky and water change from afternoon to evening--a beautiful experience. Rowing over to the island is not a strenuous experience, but provides a lot of fun and interest, and being out on the water is both beautiful and relaxing. We also enjoyed the proximity of the town of Brunswick. If you feel like going off island for an afternoon or evening, this interesting little town provides shops and restaurants, and the beautiful college campus provides a change of pace. And as much as we all dislike Walmart, there is one in Brunswick that provides an abundance of groceries and anything else you have forgotten to pack. Being a city person from Pittsburgh, having the "tidal experience" was very enjoyable. This house enabled us be very close to nature, yet without the discomfort of the tent camping experience, which we have done many times in Maine. The house was immaculate and very comfortable. The bathroom was spacious and beautifully appointed, and the kitchen was well supplied with enough pots, pans, dishes and gadgets to be able to cook a decent meal. Wonderful views from every room in the house. For those who enjoy the canoe or kayak experience, this is the perfect house--stay safely close to the island or venture out into more challenging waters. We were looking for a quiet, relaxing experience from our hectic jobs, and this house and island provided everything we were looking for. The bonus was meeting the owners, Anne and Barry, who were kind and caring and gave us all the information we needed to have a great time. The scrapbook in the Boat House showing the refurbishment of the house and the island gave us a great appreciation for how much work and love these two have put into this place. They have transformed it. We spent two weeks at the house, and I had to be dragged away on our last morning there. If you are looking for a comfortable respite without the commercialism of the typical tourist get aways, this is the place. God, I wish I was there right now......

Incomparable beauty, peace, and privacy

Carrie & Peter Cambridge, MA
Review Submitted: November 17, 2008 Date of Stay: October 2008
"We're going to our island."

Rent a private island. Sounds like something only celebrities get to do, right? But that is exactly what you get at the Boat House, and I cannot describe the joy we feel when we make a reservation and begin to once again plan a getaway to "our" island. (We are repeat customers many times over.)

The house itself is cozy, romantic, tranquil, and completely charming. This is a place where you can grill your dinner outside and then sit and watch the stars, and listen to the tide... and have 360 degrees of views and privacy. And waking up in the master bedroom on the second floor, with its huge picture window revealing the ocean and the birds zipping around catching their breakfast, is simply breathtaking.

Yes, you have to plan ahead sometimes to get on & off the island based on the tides (high tide = rowboat, low tide = walking) but as far as we are concerned, that is absolutely part of the appeal. There's nothing better than planning your day in town (lunch in Portland? shopping in Freeport? movie & ice cream in Harpswell?), then walking back to the island, and watching the water close around you and isolate you as you settle in for the evening.

The island and house are impeccably maintained, and everything has been given such care and thought... when you walk into the kitchen, not only have you been provided with everything you need, but everything is exactly where you think it should be! And the community of renters is wonderful as well -- it's great to read the guestbook to see what wildlife has been spotted, or review the bookshelves to see what new books have been added. We all know that this is a rare and special place that should be treated with the utmost respect.

We really consider ourselves blessed to have found this property (and if you knew me, you would know that I NEVER use that word). As much as we'd like to keep it all to ourselves, we know that there are other people who can appreciate this unique location, and we hope that they find it and fall in love with it like we did.
