Aloha! We are Michael & Candi . We caretakers of Maka Nui on which Pali Hale is located . We have lived on this property since 1993. Being Big Island residents for over 22 years this is now home forever. The new owners have enlisted our help to make this a peaceful retreat from their busy life in the mainland. To that end we are always trying!
We love meeting new guests & giving clues as to the best way to enjoy the island while here. There have been many return's , so must be doing something right!
So we hope to hear from all of you & treat you to our slice of paradise.
Mahalo Candi & Michael
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2005
The property is on a cliff over looking Kealakeakua Bay , which is a marine preserve & offers wonderful kayaking -snokeling. The quiet rural area is perfect for enjoying the birds & smells of Hawaii . But is a short 15-20 minute drive to Kailua town for night life.
Maka Nui means eye veiw which is obvious when you enter the gated property.
First is the coast line veiw, then the fresh fruits & flowers which are yours for the picking. The security of your own resort type setting. There are 2 mascots ( dogs)named Happy & Bamboo which love to meet you also. We also 5 cats and we are their staff! The peace & quiet is a plus for all.
Although we "booked" this property about 7 months in advance of our visit, the owner rented it to someone else and we were forced to scramble for another property. Even though we followed all their instructions regarding payment, they simply returned our check and said, "sorry". This owner is not to be trusted.
My wife and I stayed here for four days as part of our honeymoon to the Big Island.
LOCATION: Near Captain Cook and important amenities very close by like grocery store, gas, kayak rentals, breakfast, other nice food spots, coffee farms, beach, amazing snorkeling. Conveniences nearby but you feel like you are away from the heavily touristed Kailua-Kona, which is a 20-25 minute drive away.
SETTING: Five acre property with a few buildings on it, within a secure gated entrance. The huge and gorgeous main house is a separate building from this rental property, which is a smaller, not super fancy but in a very quaint, comfortable and peaceful setting. This rental is private from the other buildings on the property. Stunning view from the lanai. Waking up to birds, roosters and sipping coffee on lanai while watching sunrise. Weather was always comfortable and we spent both mornings and evenings in shorts and t-shirt typically. Mango, papaya, citrus, bananas, MAC nut tree behind house (an abundance of nuts you can crack and eat), avocado, pineapple...all available for picking.
AMENITIES: the usual stuff plus snorkeling gear, propane mini BBQ with a nice grill, washer/dryer, chairs, beach umbrella, fully stocked kitchen appliances. However, no high quality coffee making supplies, so if you're a coffee connoisseur you may want to bring your own stuff (for instance: only a blade grinder and Mr Coffee drip is available). We like burr grinder and French press...
MANAGER: Candi is a darling of a person and shares the Aloha generously. Available and affable but not overbearing. Lives nearby. Went the extra mile for us on a couple occasions. Also has 100% Kona coffee for sale which was grown on the estate.
I would recommend this rental to a friend.
Candi did an awesome job as hostess and had some great ideas of places to eat and things to see. The cottage was the perfect size and had a great view of the ocean. Great place away from the crowds. We will be back next year!
Our first trip to Hawaii and we couldn't have lucked out more finding Candi and her delightful hideaway with all the amenities you need. Where else can you sit on your lanai with an unobscured, incredible view of the pacific with its crashing waves. Where else can you walk 20 steps from your lanai and pick lemons, oranges, bananas, tangerines. Where else can you wake to the sound of different types of birds and roosters crowing. Where else do the geckos lick orange juice off your fingers in the morning. Where else can you get daily visits from the estates two incredibly friendly dogs. They don't stay long but come to say hi daily. Candi's hospitality is fantastic and her knowledge of the area is incredible. Centrally located in the Kona area with easy access to all sites and adventures offered. We will definitely be back!
If you want privacy, spectacular views, cool evenings and a convenient location, this is your place. It's perfect for two people. There is no air conditioning, but you will not miss it. We actually needed extra blankets at night. Candi was a perfect hostess. So friendly and helpful. The welcome basket was great. We could see the whales from the balcony. The cottage has everything you'll need including a cooler, chairs and an umbrella for the beach. The location was great as it was near the best snorkeling on the island, Kealakeakua Bay, at the end of the road. We hated to leave and are already planning our return trips where we'll be brining family and staying in the main house, which is also amazing, and our "retirement" trip where we'll be staying at the cottage for at least a month. We've stayed at many places on the island and this cottage, by far, is our favorite.
When we arrived "home", we had a wonderful basket of goodies and the basics to get us through the night. Candi and Michael provided us with all of the information we needed and helped to make our vacation perfect. Great caretakers. It was the quiet getaway with a wonderful view. We look forward to going back.
What a beautiful place this is! Like everyone looking for the perfect Hawaiian locale we scrutinized many offerings and clicked through even more photos. Luck was on our side when we discovered Pali Hale! Wow! The views are incredible! 1200 ft above the coastline makes for spectacular and ever-changing scenery as the view changes with sun, fog, clouds, storms and sunsets.
The hospitality is second to none from the moment you are welcomed by a wonderful Aloha Basket, 2 sweet dogs and hosts extraordinaire, Candi and Michael! Candi and Michael are happy to offer tips and recommendations on beaches, restaurants and all the best sights and activities on the Island.
The cottage is perfect for two with all the comforts of home. We enjoyed our 5 night stay and regretted that it was not longer; we hope to return.
Just to let you know, Candi, we discovered a stowaway on the way to the airport. One of the gekkos decided to hop a ride. We pulled over and let him out of the car so I hope he's back on the lanai relaxing!
Mahalo nui loa!
