Photos and Description of the Las Cruces vacation house rental
House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Mesilla is a historic pueblo where the Gadsen Purchase was signed and many historic events have transpired. Population of 2500, traditionally Mexican-American, and rich with cultural history, adobe architecture and events on the Plaza which is 2 blocks north, shopping, and several family owned restaurants and clubs.

Las Cruces adjoins Mesilla and has most of the cultural amenities you would expect of a community of 95,000. This site is ideal for walking, and bicycle riding; long rides through the Mesilla Valley are easy to find. The river, Rio Grande runs through the town and there is a network of irrigation ditches throughout the town that service the fields of pecan groves, and chiles. Winters are mild, and we have 325 days of sun a year.

The house is simple, with the deluxe amenities and easy to enjoy.Summer rates are now in place until September! Home is very comfortable in scale, 1200 sq ' of living space plus the enclosed garden.

The garden is right outside the back door and is private, and intimate, well designed and inspiring. The home style is 'old mexican' and has faux finished floors and walls which are 3 ft. thick adobe. There is a handcarved king sleigh bed in the master bedroom and comfortable furnishings as well as hand made copper sinks and efficient stacked washer and dryer.

Although you have all of the comforts of a boutique hotel suite, the simplicity of its amenities is appealing to a certain simplified aesthetic. The owner does not want it to lose its historic feeling by overly modernizing it, and the home is on the historical register. Owner is an artist and walls are full of original artwork from her collection. Easel and art supplies are available upon request.

Maximum stay is 15 days.

There is parking in back for 2 vehicles and/or RV.

About Owner- Ouida Touchon

Artist/Designer with wonderful historic property and her own home near-by. I love to restore and design functional and artistic spaces to live in and enjoy. The home is actually larger than the photos allow, and has a definite wow! factor for those who appreciate historic environments.

Owner- Ouida Touchon purchased this house in 2003
Why Owner- Ouida Touchon chose Las Cruces

This home was originally my studio, where I would make art and greet visitors. As it turns out, after going through the process of restoring it from a ruinous rent house to a gorgeous historic home, I couldn't bear to paint or make creative messes in it any longer and so I was able to offer it to others to enjoy while I found a less precious dwelling nearby to put into home and studio.

What makes this house unique

The most appealing thing about this property is the tone of relaxation and comfort that it offers. All of the details for a pleasing stay are considered, and the owner will do her best to meet your special requests. Be prepared to let go of your cares and still stay in touch with the world you left behind (that is, if you choose to!)

We cannot say enough about how much we loved our stay at this special little home. We immediately felt at home after Ouida met us and showed us the ropes. The home was exactly as pictured and so close to the historic Mesilla plaza. It was easy to prepare your meals with an adequately stocked kitchen and great to have a laundry as well. Ouida is a wonderful hostess and so very talented. We encourage all who stay here to visit her studio and see her work. There is more to do in the area than you will have time for in one stay but you can always come back as we plan to do. We went to Double Eagle for our anniversary-a wonderful restaurant. Took some friends to La Posta and went to the Bean often. Also enjoyed Café de Mesilla in the plaza.

Owner's Response: Some of the nicest people come to stay. This couple were eager to get out of northern Ohio and enjoy the mild weather and I am so glad we became friends and I will see them on their return visit next year. Thanks Terry and Rob!

New Mexican Enchantment

5 of 5
Submitted: February 25, 2013 Stayed: January 2013
This was the third time we have stayed at this lovely old adobe house, as we enjoy it so much. The many artistic touches, eclectic furniture, modern appliances, all combined with the the original walls and ceilings is very unique. The house is always clean, and we sleep wonderfully well on the comfortable bed. Each time we have visited, it has been in winter, with just peeks of spring coming in. Yet, on a sunny day, it is still lovely to sit outside in the sun. The short walk to the old plaza is wonderful, and even in winter there is a farmers market, though not with fresh produce in January. We enjoy day trips around the Las Cruces vicinity for widely diverse sightseeing, including hiking, museums, ghost towns, old Spanish Missions, while taking many pictures as we go. In the evening, we sit in the study and upload and look at the day's photos. The pellet stove is so cozy, and there is nothing like being curled up with a good book and a nice fire on a chilly night after a day full of activities.

Ouida is a lovely person, and is always available for help and information, and keeps us well stocked with pellets. Love going to Andele's for New Mexican food, and St. Claire's Winery, both on her recommendation.

All in all, we cannot think of a more lovely location to use as a home base for our roaming in southern New Mexico.

Owner's Response: My goodness, this is heartening to read from my repeat guests from Wisconsin. I always enjoy having them back and only wish they could see the roses in the garden in the spring. I'll have to send a picture. Thanks very much, Ouida

An Adventure

3 of 5
Submitted: February 7, 2013 Stayed: December 2012
This was an adventure the house was charming in it's own way and the kitchen was adequate "after I went out and bought a few pans" which I was reimbursed for. The biggest problem for us was the "garden" is right on a VERY busy street not so peaceful between the traffic and barking dogs also the gas fumes made it impossible to enjoy sitting out there for very long. I did like the walk on the canal each day as it was pecan harvest time and I found this very interesting. Mesilla's Christmas eve was nothing to brag about in my opinion and the street so crowded we went home for dinner. All in all it is was a good trip....the house could REALLY use a good cleaning and if you are short like me use the aprons provided as the stove and sink area hits you about mid chest so anything you wear will be a mess. I understand the adobe and stone floors are hard to clean but doors and such cld all use a deep cleaning and the floor a scrubbing.

Owner's Response: Well, you can't please all the people all the time.Sadly this was a complainer that found fault with everything....the pans she bought were from the cheap store and I have removed them from this wonderful old home. When a house is more than 150 years old and has 3' thick adobe walls and the original viga and latilla ceiling, there is no way to make it all shiney new like a condo or a track house. Consider the source, and then decide. Ouida

Delightful stay in Old Mesilla adobe

5 of 5
Submitted: January 21, 2013 Stayed: December 2012
We had a wonderful time in Ouida’s historic Mesilla adobe over New Years. The adobe is cozy and provides all that one needs for a comfy home away from home. Our week long stay, which included a rare touch of snow, afforded us opportunities to visit the many shops on and around the plaza in Mesilla, and to sample several restaurants in the area. La Posta has been one of our favorite Mexican restaurants for many years (I am an NMSU graduate), and it is only two blocks from Ouida’s abode. We also enjoyed two evenings of movies at the historic Fountain Theater, only one block from our abode. Probably the highlight of our time in Mesilla was the visit to Ouida’s studio where she showed us some of the techniques used in her art. We’re looking forward to a return visit!

This is our second attempt at this posting; we hope this one makes it onto the site.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Sightseeing, Romantic Getaway
Owner's Response: Thanks very much Gary and Mary Ann, it was equally enjoyable to meet you and share the special magic I know exists in this very old and welcoming home. Come back soon and I will make sure that there is no snow (once in a blue moon) scheduled for your visit. Take care, Ouida
